Clovers in Massachusetts:

Most of this database was donated by Sarah Ann Wilcox.  We are all grateful for it.  She told me that she looked at these on microfiche sets at her library.  Some of the microfiche were old, worn, and hard to read.  If you have better information available, we would be glad to have it.
Each set of microfiche cover several years.  Unfortunately, the state wide indexes do not start until 1841.

Early Massachusetts Marriage Record
I tripped over a Clover record in Massachusetts while looking for something else.  However, I am not sure it is actually a Clover.

Joanna Clover married David Northam, 02 April 1784, in Conway, Franklin County, Massachusetts. This information comes from the Broderbund CD named Massachusetts Marriage Index 1620-1850.  This entry cites FHL microfilm 0903684.  An expert in Massachusetts records tells me that this CD is not complete. No further citation detail is given. This FHL microfilm includes the Town and Vital Records of Conway, Massachusetts, 1760-1868.  I am not totally sure that this is a Clover.  The IGI lists this marriage as a Glover from the same microfilm.  The CD is a later extraction and I would very much like to know what the actual film says.  Has anyone looked at this film?

While I was at Salt Lake City, I searched the following microfiche which are not widely available. I found no Clovers in any of them.

Massachusetts Military

The New England Genealogical and Historical Register, volumes 1-148, has only two mentions of Clovers. One is from English Records and one is this:
Vol 26 (1872) p 23: “Notes on the Early Ship building in Massachusetts” by Capt George Henry Preble USN. “A Complete List of the Public and Private Armed Vessels belonging to Mass. Prior to the Revolution from 1635-1776 and of Armed Vessels built or fitted out in Mass from 1776-1783 inclusive”.
Schooner “Nimble Shilling” with 6 guns, 15 men, commanded by J Clover in 1781.   The same schooner with 5 guns and 16 men is also listed as commanded by S Hill in 1781.  No further Clover information given.

NEGHS has a database of Massachusetts Soldiers in the Colonial Wars of the 1700s.

The exact war that he took part in is not included which would be nice but it must have been the French and Indian War. I would have like to know more about this. So far, all of the Clovers I have found from this time in Massachusetts have been Glovers.  I don't know about this one.

Elijah Clover, Private served 5 weeks in Capt. Estes Hatch Company, 18 September to 22 September 1746.

General John Clover of Marblehead is actually General John Glover

This link used to be to his statue.  The link no longer works and maybe they realized how wrong they were.

I don't have enough problems with mythology, the Story of Boston is out to get the Clovers sucked in.  Thanks to Michael Clover for bringing this to my attention.  I tried to find an email address to bring this to their attention.  There is none so their error is going to continue to hang out there. I guess that is why you should never have a website without a contact point.

Revolutionary War Pension and Bounty-Land Warrant Application Files NARA Series M804, Pension number R. 8913 for Peter Robinson,  State of Massachusetts.
The following letter refers to a General Clover in the seventh line.  There is a General Glover in Massachusetts and I don't know if this was an error.  The two names are commonly confused. This is definitely a Clover, so I am including it here.  See US Military Records
