Clovers in Kansas

Clovers in History Articles

Kansas was part of the Louisiana purchase in 1803. The Santa Fe Trail crossed what is now Kansas beginning in 1821 but it remained unorganized territory until 1854 when it became a territory.  At that time, the Kansas Territory reached all the way west to the Rocky Mountains.  Kansas became the 34th state with its current boundaries in 1861.  This was a major event in US history because the Kansas-Nebraska act said that Kansas had the right to vote to choose whether it was a slave state or a free state.  There was heavy migration to Kansas just before statehood by both factions. The ugly fighting between factions caused Kansas to become known as Bleeding Kansas. Kansas ultimately voted to become a free state.

Censuses

Kansas is one of the states that has excellent territorial and state censuses.  They were taken every 10 years beginning in 1855 and ending in 1925. Most of these censuses ask when the individual came to Kansas.  They all ask for name, age, place of birth.  Some of the agricultural schedules for the territorial censuses survived.  I only have a few of these state censuses.  If you have one, please share it.  If you want to get a copy of one, you can order the microfilm of the state census through Inter Library Loan from the Kansas Historical Society in Topeka.  They will loan it to your library.

1860 Census

The first federal census for Kansas was taken in 1860.

The World’s Largest Ball of Twine
Take the world’s largest ball of twine, for example. Located in Cawker City, it was started in a barn by a bored farmer. The ball is made up of nearly 8 million feet of twine. It has been a work in progress since 1953, and Linda Clover, official caretaker, said anyone could add to it free of charge.
“I’ve found yarn on it. I’ve found string on it. I’ve found a little bit of everything on it,” Clover said. The ball is so large it was moved to its own roofed area. Now it’s accessible 24 hours a day.  Clover said that the ball was surprisingly popular with students.
“During spring break they just come here like crazy,” Clover said. “It’s just lots of fun. We know people joke about it, but we don’t mind that.”

From:    craig@nytimes.com (Craig Calder)

I was looking for any information on my deceased grandmother Eleanor
"Daisy" Clover or her family.
The only thing I know about her is she was from Oswego, KS, had a brother
named Melvin who moved to Bakersfield, CA and her second marriage was to my
grandfather Angus Robert Calder and they moved to Long Beach, CA in the 1930's.
She would be in her 90's if she was alive today. [2001]

LAZETTE NEWS.
Winfield (Kansas) Courier, December 24, 1874.

The Lazette Literary Society had a regular meeting on Friday evening last. The question of a change in the administration of the affairs of the nation was discussed, and it was decided that such change is demanded by the best interests of the country. An election then took place, which resulted as follows.
For President, John Clover; Vice Pres., R. M. Jackson; Treas., Mac D. Stapleton; Secretary,
Arthur Pickering; Editors of paper, S. M. Fall and R. C. Story.

The following bits of information came originally from Enid Ostertag. She passed these on to Kay Frost and Kay sent them to me.  I have no further information.  They appear to be out of newspapers that Enid was extracting.  Wetmore is in Nemaha County, Kansas
Angeline Clover, born 1825, died 11 February 1897, Nemaha, Kansas.
Charles D. Clover, born 1858, died 1897.
Thomas J. Clover, born 1898, died 1958, Wetmore, Kansas.
Angeline Clover is Angeline Macoman, born Tennessee, widow of Jay Perry Clover. Charles D. Clover was her son, but according to the censuses, he was actually born 1852. In 1860, they are in the census of Henderson County, Illinois. They are near Cornelius Clover, born 1794, New York, and Jay Perry Clover is supposed to be his son.]

TERRIBLE ACCIDENT AT LAZETTE!
One Man Killed and Ten Seriously Wounded.

An accident occurred last Saturday at the saw and grist mills of Lacy & Roberts on the Grouse Creek. One man was killed and ten seriously wounded, besides a large number slightly wounded. Below we give our correspondence on the subject, which will give the details.
                                                  LAZETTE, March 8th, 1874.
ED. COURIER. A terrible accident occurred at the mill of Lacy & Roberts on Saturday about 12 o’clock M. by which one man was killed, ten wounded. The mill was running at its usual speed, grinding corn, the steam gauge standing at forty pounds. Everything seemed to be in perfect order; the mill house was full of men waiting for their grinding, when by some unknown means the iron band that held the stone together bursted and runner flew into atoms knocking people down and tearing the mill house to pieces, throwing fragments some twenty or thirty yards.
Freeman Wedding was struck by a large stone, which crushed his hips to a jelly and dislocated his back. The poor sufferer lingered for an hour and then expired. He leaves a wife and one child to mourn his loss.
Among the wounded were Samuel Sherman, Gear Dawson, Wm. Gintes, Wm. Gubbond, Hezis. Hodgkiss, Delfunt Sutton, My Kimble, Messrs. Lacy and Roberts, and two others, names unknown. It is thought by the physicians in attendance that all the wounded will recover.
The mill is situated on the Grouse Creek four miles above Lazette, and has been doing a prosperous business for some two years. The proprietors are deeply grieved at the disaster, and they have the sympathy of the entire community.
                                     Yours respectfully, COLUMBUS SPRAGUE.
We, the undersigned, who were present at the mill of Roberts & Lacy at the time the burr burst, by which one man was killed and others wounded, take this method of exonerating the proprietors and employees of the mill from all blame,  It was in our opinion, an unavoidable accident.
Signed: H. B. Clover, J. H. Welch, G. W. Dawson, J. W. Kannard, J. H. Smith, Wm. H. Sheras, G. H. McClung, R. F. Burden, Wm. Titchworth, J. H. Sweet, I. H. Pickett, John H. McDupper, John R. Nugent, David Peel, John H. Wilson, A. T. Smith, J. W. Tull, D. H. Hotchkiss, Geo. Lobinger, B. F. Fritch, E. S. Field, Columbus Sprague, John Moses, E. Simpson, Stephen Simple.
[H. B. Clover was the son of Gamaliel Clover.  He was fron Pennsylvania, but was out in this area because of oil field explorations.]
