house with
no family members.]
Note:
I received a message that I had missed a set of Clovers in 1870.
There
is a William Clover family in New Haven listed in Ancestry.
He was black, aged 26. Unfortunately, when I looked at
this, I discovered
that it is a family of Glovers.

- James Clover 35 He and both
parents were born in Russia Lithuania. They emigrated ca. 1898.
He was listed as an alien; Minnie Clover 30 8/4 children. She and
parents were also born in Russia Lithuania; John son 10 born CT; Annie
dau 9 CT; Anthony son 2 CT; Joseph son 1 CT.
I
first located this family some years ago. I saw that they were
from
Lithuania and realized that they were not related to any group I was
working with at the time. However, I was later contacted by a lovely
lady who told me that they were cousins of hers. Apparently, when
they
emigrated to America, their own name was difficult so they took the
surname Clover because they were living on Clover Street in Waterbury,
Connecticut. I always that this was interesting. It shows
that we
need to be very careful about the assumptions we make about our
ancestors names.

Clovers
or Clavers?
Early Connecticut Marriages by
Frederick Bailey. Book 6 has First Church Middletown, Middlesex
County, CT Marriages. This is the town that John Clover
lived in,
but different church. I noticed this because of the Cornelia. It
is so hard to read Clover vs. Claver in that old writing. I have
not seen the acutal record.
Page 106: David Atkins married Cornelia Claver 12 February 1784.
This is also in the IGI batch no. 7025912, sh 75.
Page 108: Wm Cleaver Jr, married Jemima Hunt, 25 October 1787.

Frederick W. Bailey, “Marriages from First Congregational Church,

As found on Ancient Church Records Prior to 1800, Volume 2,
published
1896. I don't really know if these are Clovers.

There is an entry in the IGI for a Philip Clover who married [no spouse
given] 30 May 1754 in Hebron, Toland County, Connecticut. If you
want to look for this entry, go to www.familysearch.org and do a
general search for Philip Clover married 1754.
It appears that this submission
was for the Philip Clover of Berkeley County, Virginia. Since
this is my line, I hopped on the entry and started trying to find out
more. The submitter is, I am told, deceased which is a real
shame. So I looked at what records exist for Hebron and
discovered that the town records were published in the Barbour
Collection and that these town records are on line at
http://www.douglaslibrary.org/barbour/
I checked every cl~, kl~, culver, even Glover,
and found absolutely
nothing.
I have been searching for
church
records for the area. The only church having marriage records
during this time period in Hebron which is listed in the FHL catalog,
is the Gilead Congregaional Church. This is on microfilm no.
4460. There is a website with quite a bit of Hebron information
at: http://www.rockvillemama.com/hebronct.htm
There is a link to marriages prior to 1800 which come from the 2nd
Congregational Church in Hebron which was organized in May 1748, at
Gilead. There are no marriages on the right date. There is
no Philip. There is no surname that looks like it might have been
Clover or anything close.
Does anyone have any ideas on
this subject?
While researching John
Clover in
Middlesex, Connecticut, I
have also checked the following state wide indexes for Clovers with
little result. I am reporting these negative searches so that
researchers can check them off their Connecticut list. There is a
statewide church record index from the Connecticut State Library which
makes up 69 rolls of film. No Clovers were found. [FHL microfilm
2812] According to the Connecticut State Library, this index is not
complete. This is obviously true since we know of one entry in
Middletown.
There is also a General Index to
Probate Records, 1641-1948 on 67 rolls of film at Hartford. No
Clovers were found in this index. {FHL microfilm 166011] However, this
is an index to testators, etc., and is not an every name index to
probate records.
The Barbour Collection is a
massive set of Connecticut vital records prior to 1850 collected by
Lucius Barbour. It is available on 98 microfilms at many large
libraries including the one at Orlando, Florida. I checked the main
index and the Middletown records for Clovers and found none.
However, the preface refers to church records, published
originally ca. 1866. It is not clear to me that it included all of
the available church records. The preface implies that some were in the
history, Church records of Rev. Nathaniel Chauncey, Re. Elizar
Goodrich, and Rev. David Smith. The original book had no index.
The Hale Collection is a set of
360 rolls of film which is mostly cemetery records and newspaper
articles which were extracted and put on cards. The films are of
alphabetical sets of cards organized by type and location. I have
not searched all of the Hale Collection because of its massive size and
the way it is organized. However, I searched FHL microfilm 3282,
Connecticut Marriages, and found one Clover entry: Ellen Clover
m. C. O Cone, 5 April 1840, page 320, marriage notice, American
Sentinal and Witness.
I also searched FHL microfilm
3106, Hale Collection: Cemetery
Inscriptions. There were five
Clover entries. This is an index and there may be further information
in the original entry.
Anthony Clover 1907-1924, Waterbury Inscriptions 224, cemetery 1, page
111.
Joseph T. Clover 1909-1934, Waterbury Inscriptions 224, Cemetery 1 page

Nellie M. Clover died 23 September 1865, aged 5 m 1 d, Kent
Inscriptions 609, cemetery 2 page 31.

Connecticut
Nutmegger.
This is the periodical published by the Connecticut Genealogical
Society. Orlando Public Library had many of the early issues. I
searched Volumes 1-33 of this periodical. There is a master index
to volumes 1 through 28. Volume 30 was not complete and did not
have an index at Orlando.
The fact that so few Clover
entries were found in these records does not mean that there are no
Clover records in Connecticut. Unlike so many other areas,
Connecticut is blessed with massive records going all the way back to
its inception, but these large, statewide indexes are not necessarily
complete. However, the scarcity of Clovers is probably due to the fact
that John Clover and his family moved to New York State shortly
after
the 1790 baptisms.
