Clover Marriages in Virginia
No civil authority
was
tasked
with maintaining marriage records until 1780. A law passed
then required the ministers to notify the county of marriages.
After that time, counties were supposed to keep records.
However, universal compliance with this requirement was slow in coming.
This is why there are few Clover marriage records in Berkeley
County.
Berkeley County was formed 1772 from Frederick County, Virginia. The earliest marriage records in the county are spotty according to information in the book of marriages.

There are not that many Clovers in this book. I also have the Ambrose,

- Page 14: Mary Ann Clover married Hugh Smith, 23 December 1835. Her father was Peter Clover, Bondsmen Hugh Smith and William Michael. [This is wrong, her father was Philip Clover. She is in his estate records.)
- Page 31: Georgette Clover married Robert Houghenbury, 21 August 1847. Bondsmen were Robert Houghenbury and Napoleon Buck.
