Research Report on Clovers in Tax Records prior to 1829
Because so many of the early censuses did not survive, there have been several attempts to substitute tax records for the censuses. They do not have as much information as the censuses did but at least they let us know who was living where at what time. The following are abstracted from the Accelerated Indexing System Search One which is available at all FHC on microfiche and on CDs.
Tax Department
Since so many censuses from the early years did not survive, it is
necessary to use tax lists to “reconstruct” the
censuses. The following are some of Clovers in the tax lists
before 1829.

Gideon Clover is listed in some printed Ross Co, OH Tax Lists. He is actually a Glover
This tax list is based on AIS published tax lists. I have
not checked all of them for accuracy. If you know of any other
Clovers in censuses or tax lists before 1829 please let me know
immediately. Also if you are aware of other errors in the
published tax lists please let us know. The large numbers of errors in
the early AIS census indexes does not build confidence in the accuracy
of their tax lists. Nevertheless, it is the best thing we have
available on a wide scale.
