Clover Family Research Compendium

Created, Edited, and Maintained By June Clover Byrne

Clover Immigration, Naturalization,

and Ship Passenger Records

In my many years of publishing the Clover Family Newsletters, I have acquired many bits and pieces which I never had occasion to publish. Now that I have retired from actively publishing the newsletters, I want to make sure that my research is available to future genealogists. Consequently, I am preparing research reports on early Clover records in many geographical areas. This is just one of them. For information about further reports in an area in which you are interested, please contact June Clover Byrne, Editor of the Clover Family Newsletters, at junebyr@yahoo.com This report is copyrighted 2007 by June Clover Byrne.

Names?

I don't know where to put this information so am putting it here.  I find it interesting that Clover might be a Danish or Dutch name.  There were a lot of Danish people living in Germany for various reasons.

Clover, Kloover?

British Family Names, Their Origin and Meaning by Rev. Henry Barber, MD, FSA, (London: Elliot Stock, 1903), 117.  Rev Barber lists the surname Clover with several possibilities for its etymology:

Clover.  Old Norse: Klaufi(?) (Awkward); Dutch Kloover; Danish Klhver

Newman, 1982), 10.
William Clover of Essex, England 1748
In Bonded Passengers to America Volume III-IV, page 165, William Clover is listed as convicted of stealing a gelding and reprieved for transportation, pardon dated Summer 1748;  Essex, England to America probably in the next ship bound for America which was the Summer.

The following names are from a Wm. P. Filby book.  I don't have an exact title but he published many of them and this was entitled Passenger and Immigration Index: 1982-1985 Cumulative lists, page 526.

Isaac Clover Texas 1835 [Reference: 4079, page 86] [I suspect that this was actually the son of Paul Clover who moved to Texas about this time.]

Mary Clover Virginia 1653 [Reference:  6220 page 250]

Peter Clover Philadelphia 1766 [This is a reference to the naturalization record below.]

Clover Naturalization Record

Since there is little in the way of actual ship manifests which exist in the 18th Century when several of our Clover families came to the colonies, we have to look at naturalization records.  The one very important record is for a Peter Clover in 1766 in Philadelphia.  The following is from Persons Naturalized in the Province of Pennsylvania, 1740 to 1773, (Baltimore, Maryland: Genealogical Publishing Company, 1967), 104-5.
The Lords Commissioners for Trade and Plantation established the act for naturalization in the American and West Indian colonies in 1740. Pursuant to that act, commissioners in the Americas sent records back to England detailing those foreign Protestants who were naturalized in the colonies. This collection of those naturalization records contains important information from 1740 until about 1782 when the commission was dissolved. Divided by location, names are given of naturalized persons. Although designed just to record Protestants, New York lists also include some Jews and Quakers. Some state's records are more complete than others, New York being thought most inclusive while Virginia is thought least comprehensive.
At a Supreme Court held at Philadelphia for the Province of Pennsylvania, before William Allen, William Coleman, and Alexander Stedman, Esquires, Judges of the same Court, the tenth day of April, in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and sixty-six, between the hours of nine and twelve of the Clock in the forenoon of the same day, the following persons being foreigners.

[There is here a short list of Juror's with the county they were from and when they had last taken the sacrament.. They were from various counties in Pennsylvania, not New Jersey.]

And the Persons hereafter named, being foreigners and of the people called Quakers and other Protestants, who conscientiously scruple the taking an oath, severally took the Affirmations and made and subscribed the Declaration according to the directions of the same Act, entitled " An Act for naturalizing such Foreign Protestants and others therein mentioned as are settled or shall settle in any of his Majesty's Colonies in America," and of an Act of General Assembly of this Province of Pennsylvania, made in the year of our lord one thousand seven hundred and forty two.
                                        Signed  Edward Shippen, Jr, Prot

Affirmer's name County Province
Petter Kappa Hunterdon New Jersey
Peter Young Hunterdon New Jersey
Yost Sheffer Hunterdon New Jersey
Peter Clover Hunterdon New Jersey
John Smith Hunterdon New Jersey

I have put in the entire section so that you can see that this naturalization is dated 1766.  The 1742 refers to the date of the Act of the General Assembly.  Also, this does NOT say that John Peter Clover was a Quaker.  It is a fact that several denominations of German Churches, as well as the Dutch Reformed Church, banned swearing oaths.  Since John Peter Clover is known to have been a member of a Dutch Reformed Church at one time, it was normal that he would not swear an oath. The fact that he was a member of a Dutch Reformed Church does not mean he was Dutch.  The Dutch Reformed Church was the church closest to the beliefs of many Germans who were opposed to the Anglican Church because it had not moved far enough from the Catholic Church. Since there was a serious shortage of ministers and churches, you will find many Germans attending the Dutch Reformed Churches.
Peter Clover is the only Clover found in this book. He is listed in the middle of a group  of persons from Hunterdon Province, New Jersey so apparently a group of them went together. He had to have been in the colony for at least 7 years so had to have emigrated before 1759.  He could have been here much longer. Since he is being naturalized in the English courts, he also clearly was not born in the British Isles. These people were supposed to take communion before they pledged allegiance to the throne.  It was basically set up for Protestants.  Philadelphia was just across the river from Hunterdon Co and thus would have been much closer than any other court. The assumption here is that this is Peter Sr, not Peter Jr.  Normally the head of the household was naturalized because this also naturalized his wife and minor children. However, it could also have been Peter, jr who was marrying Sarah Emons and probably wanted to purchase land.
However, please note that we have no proof that this was for Peter Sr or Peter Jr. Please do not make any assumptions.

The following list of Clovers is courtesy of Lois Guffy who found these Clovers at  http://www.ellisisland.org  Some of them are of great  interest because if you look carefully, they are from US families who went to Europe and returned. Many of them have dates and places of birth.  This is strictly an index and if you find a person you are interested in, you should go to the site and look at the actual manifest. Note also on this site that there is a fascinating time line which tells us why we have so many problem with earlier records. There was a fire in 1897 which destroyed most of the records dating from 1855.
