Clover 1790 to 1820 Federal Census Errata

This is based upon an article I researched, wrote, and published in the Clover Family Exchange, Voume 7, issue 2/3, dated Spring 1998.

The following are listed as Clovers in various indexes.  For stated reasons, they are probably not Clovers.  It is certainly possible that some of these are, but additional external evidence would be needed to prove it.  They are at least not very likely to be Clovers. If you have additional evidence which would tend to prove that one if these definitely is or is not a Clover, I would very much like to hear from you.

1790

The following names are indexed as Clovers in Accelerated Indexing System databases for 1790. They are not Clovers in the books published by the Census Bureau, but have appeared as Clovers in indexed extractions of those books. The page numbers refer to the original Census Bureau Books.

Benjamin Culver   Columbia Co, NY        p 064            03 04 01 00 00
John Culver    Dutchess Co, NY        p 076            01 02 02 00 00
Joseph Culver    Montgomery Co, NY    p 113            01 01 02 00 00
Wilson Clover    Philadelphia Co, PA    p 208    Southwark
(There is no Clover in this book and no person with first name Wilson on this page. It appears that this entry may a result of combining two listings for a Calder and a Wilson and multiple errors.)

1800

The following names are sometimes erroneously indexed as Clovers in the 1800 indexes.

David Clone    Baltimore City, MD    p 177            10210-00020-00
John Cloves    Washington Co, MD p 668            01101-31110-00
William Glover    Edgefield Co, SC        p 164            00001-00001-00
Tetrick Clover    Cumberland Co, PA     p 138            21211-11001-00
(There is no Clover on this page.  There is no Frederick or other first name which could have been read at Tetrick.  There is no Clover for several pages before and after this page. There is no entry with these details anywhere near p 138.  The page number may be wrong or the county may be wrong. A Derick Clover shows up in 1830 in NY so perhaps this is Derick Clover but I could not find the entry.)

1810

The following is erroneously indexed as a Clover in the 1810 indexes.

Benjamin Clever    Nelson Co, KY    p 15            41101-31110-00
Mathias Clover/Cloves Fayette Co, PA New Geneva in Springfield Twp 02011-13101
John Clow Prince William Co, VA

1820

The following are sometimes erroneously indexed as Clovers in the 1820 census.

Glover, Bryant    Fairfield Co, CT        p 259    Weston    100010-01010-0100
(This is clearly a Glover. He is living next to Daniel Glover.  In 1810, there is a Daniel Glover living next to a Daniel B Glover in the same area.)
Glover, Shelton    Elbert Co, GA        p 177
Clover, Wiley    Hall Co, GA        p 146    Oliver Miller Dist
Glover, Preston    Hall Co, GA        p 146    Oliver Miller Dist
( I was able to get a better look at this group of people and think these GA entries are
probably Glovers however, Wiley is definitely written as a Clover. )

Oliver,  Abijah    Middlesex Co, MA    p 226    Acton
(This person is consistantly in other censuses as Oliver. See 1810 Acton p 236.)
Glover, Ephraim Essex Co, MA page 90 Salem
Close, Israel    Ulster Co, NY        p 48    Shandak    331111-21111
(Listed as Clover in Clover Family Exchange 2:3:7, listed in NY printed index as Clove, it actually looks like a Close.  No Israel Clover/Close/Clove in 1810 or 1830 indexes.)
Clover, Nicholas    Iredell Co, NC        p 240            420201-03010-0400+slaves
(Although Clover is clearly written in the Census, he is probably a Clore AKA Cloer.  He is living next to Elisha Clure. In the 1837 tax lists, both are listed as Clore and Cloer.  In the 1810 census, they are Cloer. It is just possible that this is a name in transition to Clover. In fact, there are large numbers of Cloer’s in NJ which is quite interesting.)
Cloer, Mary    Pickaway Co, OH        p 170    Walnut Twp        100000-10010-0000
(This is clearly Cloer in the census, however, there are known to be Clovers in the area so the listing cannot be completely discounted without further information. In addition the mark for the male child was not clear.  It may have been only a smudge.)
Colver, Emanuel    Lancaster Co, PA        p 5    Brecknock        100100-30010
Glover, Richard    Abbeville Co, SC        p 9                100010-22210
Glover, Jared Abbeville Co, SC p 58
Glover, Lancaster    Bedford Co, TN        p 26
Oliver, David    Hanover Co, VA        p 72
Oliver, Isaac    Hanover Co, VA        p 78
Cloves, Mathias    Monongalia Co, VA    p 48    W Division        200010-40010
Clouse, Michael    Monongalia Co, VA    p 66    E Division        000001-00101-0010
(There are a number of Clouse entries in this county but these are the only two which the indexer decided were Clovers.)
Clever, John    Hardy Co, VA        p 82                110010-10100-0001

If you have investigated some of these and proved that they are or are not Clovers, I  would like to know about it.  Also there are surely some listings we just don’t know about.  Let us hear if you have anything to add. I  have no illusions that this is the final word on this subject.
