Betsey Clover, daughter of John Clover
This article was
originally published in 2002 and is copyrighted 2002 by June C. Byrne.
However, much of the research here was done by Emily Nix who
is
now deceased.
A
Daughter for John Clover.
I have previously written about the John Clover of
Connecticut who lived in Greene County, New York according to the 1800
and 1810 censuses. There was a marriage for a Betsy Clover to a Matthew
Shue in 1810 in the Reformed Dutch Church in Oak Hill. Oak Hill
is in Durham which is in Greene County, New York. Emily Nix and
I worried over whether or not this girl could have been a
previously
unknown daughter of John Clover.
A year after I published this article which was in the Spring
2002, Clover Family Chronicles,
page 9-12, I found proof. I
published
the following article on Elizabeth Clover who married Matthew Shue in
1810 in Green County, New York. I can now say definitely
that she was the daughter of John Clover. I routinely check for new
information in the counties in which there are Clovers. I
recently discovered that the marriage records for the Oak Hill Dutch
Reformed Church have been transcribed from the original documents in
Albany and are on Rootsweb.com. It turns out that the
transcription for this entry reads:
8 April 1810, Matthew Shue, son of
Augustin Shue married Betsey Clover, daughter of John Clover.(1)
There was a female child in the 1790 census with
John Clover in Connecticut which could be Elizabeth. Although errors
were made, the 1790 census was supposed to include members of the
household as of 2 August 1790. In John Clover’s household
in 1800, there is a female child aged 16-26. In 1810, the female
child is not in his household in the census which suggests she might
have married.. The census was supposed to have included members of the
household as of 7 August 1810. Although this proves that a female child
was in his household, it does not prove that she was his
daughter. The dates fit so well and we have found
no other Clover family in the county at the time. The following
research is almost entirely the work of Emily Nix.
There was a marriage for a Betsy Clover to a Matthew
Shue on 8 April 1810 in the Reformed Dutch Church in Oak Hill.(2)
Oak Hill is in Durham which is in Greene County, New York. Mathew Shue
(also Shoe) was probably the son of Augustus Shue who was living in
Greene County in 1810 according to the census. Augustus and Polly
Shue sold lot 88, (Book R:193) to M. Shue in Greene County in 1816.
Mathew sold the same lot 88, (Book T:82) to F. Crooker in 1817.(3) Both
Mathew and Augustus Shoe/Shue moved with their families to Onondaga
County, New York. Augustus is buried in the Christian Hollow
Cemetery. The tombstones of Augustus and his wife read:
Auqustinus Shue, died March 15, 1828 in the 83rd year of his age;
Mariah Shue, wife of A. Shue died May 24, 1841 in the 89th year of her
age.(4) Augustus Shoe is supposed to have married Maria(h)
Merkel. Mathew had brothers named Peter, John, Avery, and George.
[Note: I was looking in the Durham Church Records at the
Frederick Clover entry to make sure that there was nothing else.
While I was in the book, I tripped over Augustus Shue. He appears
regularly starting about 1801. There were a number of other Shues in
the records, although Mathew does not appear in the index. This is
just one more connection between the John Clover family and the
Augustus Shue family.]
Matthew Shue was born ca. 23 February 1790, New
York, as he died 3 June 1869, age 79 years 3 months 11 days, buried:
Hillside Cemetery, Central Square, Hastings, Oswego County, New York.
The tombstone of Elizabeth “Betsy” Clover, his first wife,
reads: Elizabeth Shue, wife of Matthew Shue, died 27 December 1833,
aged 43 years 5 months 23 days. The tombstone of his second wife
reads: Lucretia Shue, wife of Mallory Shue, died 21 November 1861, aged
69 years 1 month. There is another tombstone: (Child) Shue 1862 (dau of
Matthew and Lucretia) aged 8 years.(5)
According to the tombstone, Elizabeth
“Betsy” (Clover) Shue would have been born ca. 4 July 1790.
This is very interesting since the baptisms of the John, William,
Frederick and Colley Clover, who were sons of John Clover, took place
on 27 April 1790 in Middletown, Connecticut.(6) The date of birth would
perfectly explain why only the boys were baptized, but there was a girl
in the census. This birth could explain why the mother was not at the
church when the baptism took place. If Betsy was her daughter, it
is just possible that the mother was too sick to attend church because
of a pregnancy. This makes Betsey look good as a possible sibling of
the
four brothers. The family moved to New York very shortly
after her birth which might explain the 1880 censuses where all of her
children say their mother was born in New York.
