Although I wrote and published this article in 1998, much of the following information is based upon The Lineage of John Peter Clover by Mary Clover Kishler.  A copy of this was sent to me by Clover Apelian and I am very grateful to her. I have since received a lot of information from various people including Jo McGinnis.

Please note that numbers in ( ) refer to endnotes at the end of the article.

Descendants of Henry Clover of Venango County, Pennsylvania

William J McMurray, Editor, History of Auglaize County Ohio, Volume II, (Indianapolis: Historical Publishing Company, Indianapolis, 1923), 39-40. Note: This is the son of Henry B. Clover.

“WILLIAM D. CLOVER, vice president of the Neeley-Clover Company, oil producers, at St. Marys, and for years recognized as one of the important factors in the development of the oil fields in Ohio, is a Pennsylvanian by birth, but has been a resident of Ohio since the days of the uncovering of the great Lima oil field and there are few men in the oil industry who have a wider acquaintance than he or whose activities along that line have been more varied and comprehensive.  Mr Clover was born at Salem, PA, June 20, 1865, and is a son of Henry B and Agnes (Neeley) Clover, both of whom were born in that state and whose last days were spent in St. Marys, to which place they moved some time after their sons had become active in the oil business there. Reared in Pennsylvania, William D Clover received his schooling there and as a young man became interested in oil development, becoming engaged in development work then going on in New York state, and there laid the foundation for the comprehensive knowledge of the oil industry now possessed by him.  When the Lima oil field was opened in the late ‘80's Mr. Clover came to Ohio and got in on the “boom:” that then was attracting so much attention throughout this part of the state.  He took an active part in several developments that marked that boom and in 1887 became attracted to the possibilities of the St. Marys field, he and his brother M K Clover, taking a hand in the rich development that soon thereafter followed in that field.  In 1890 these brothers and their cousins, the Neeley brothers, associated themselves in this development work and not long afterward formed the Neeley-Clover company, which ever since has been one of the big factors in the oil industry, heavy producers not only in Ohio but in Indiana, Texas, Oklahoma, and Pennsylvania, and of which company William D Clover is the vice-president.  This company also has leases in Kentucky and West Virginia and Mr Clover likewise is a considerable stockholder in the Lemon G Neeley Company and the Iron Mountain Company the offices of which latter companies are at Tulsa, Oklahoma.  Mr Clover is a Scottish Rite (32 degree) Mason and a noble of the ancient Arabic Order of Nobles of the Mystic Shrine, affiliated with the blue lodge, the chapter and the council of the Masonic order at St. Marys and with the consistory and shrine at Dayton, and is also a member of the local lodge of the Knights of Pythias at St. Marys.  In his political views he is a Democrat.  In 1895, some years after he had taken up his residence at St. Marys, William D Clover was united in marriage to Emma Scott, who was born in the county, daughter of Thomas and Amanda (Good) Scott, and to this union six children have been born, three of whom are living, Hazel, Orville and Robert, all of whom have been graduated from the St. Marys high school.  The deceased children of this family were Scott, John and Walter.  Mr and Mrs Clover have a very pleasant home in St. Marys and have ever taken an interested and helpful part in such movements as have been designed to promote the general welfare of the community.”

In Volume II of the same book, page 64, his brother, Marvin K Clover, is mentioned president of the Glass Block Company, Inc.

The following picture of Henry B. Clover was sent to me by Cathy Gruben.  It originally belonged to Mary Kline.  A copy of it was given to Cathy by Mary's nephew. Thanks for sharing this wonderful picture.

Henry B. Clover

1.        Henry Bascom Biedleman Clover was born 27 May 1827, Pennsylvania, (son of Gamaliel Clover, Senior and Martha Jane Platt), died 16 February 1904, St. Marys, Ohio. He married (first) Katherine Schwartz. She was born 1832, and died 1901. Henry married (second) 15 September 1863 Agnes Elizabeth Neely.(1) According to his death record in the Auglaize County, Ohio Probate Court Death Record, he died 16 February 1904 St Marys, 2nd Ward, aged 76 y 8 m 19 d. [This would calculate his birth date as 28 May 1827.] Place of birth is listed as St Marys.   [This is an error because all other records say he was born in Pennsylvania. His father Gamaliel was living in Armstrong County, Pennsylvania in 1830 according to the census records so it is most probable that Henry was born in Armstrong County.]

Agnes was born 20 February 1843, Clarion County, Pennsylvania, died 1 January 1936, Lancaster, Fairfield County, Ohio. The informant on her death certificate, C. R. Backus, stated that her parents were Gene Neely and --- Segworth, both born Clarion County, Pennsylvania.(2)  Henry and Agnes are buried in Elmgrove Cemetery, Auglaize County, Ohio.(3)  Agnes was the daughter of Jesse and Mary (Sigworth) Neely according to Mary Kishler. C. R. Backus was her son-in-law according to the 1920 Census below.
Henry was born east of the mountains in Pennsylvania and his family moved to Venango County, Pennsylvania when he was 11 years old [1838]. His sons followed the oil fields to Ohio and in the 1890's, Henry and Agnes moved to St. Marys, Ohio.(4) Mary Kishler has two birth dates for Henry’s birth with no explanation, 27 May 1827 and 11 April 1827. Henry’s death certificate states that he died 16 February 1904, aged 76 years, 8 months, 19 days, in the 2nd Ward, St. Marys, Auglaize County, Ohio. No further information was given.(5)  This would extrapolate to a birth date of 31 May 1827.
In the Clover Family Exchange 1:3:9, Mary Clover Kishler’s booklet, The Lineage of John Peter Clover, is mentioned and the early dates in it are attributed to the bible of Gamaliel Clover which was in her possession. There are no sources listed in the booklet itself. Mary listed all the descendants listed here and included birth dates.

Second Generation

2.    William Dick Clover, born 20 January 1865, Salem, Pennsylvania, according to the county history. (7) He died 16 May 1948. The informant on his death certificate, Hazel Clover, of St. Marys, Ohio, stated that William was married to Emma Clover, was a retired oil man, and was the son of Henry Clover and Agnes Neely, both born in Pennsylvania. She also stated that he had been born in Emlenton, [Venango County], Pennsylvania.(8)  William married 29 April 1896, in Auglaize County, Ohio, Emma G. Scott.(9)  Emma, born 14 December 1873, Auglaize County Ohio, died 24 November 1938. The informant, W. Dick Clover, stated that she was the daughter of C. T. Scott and Amanda Good.(10) Both William and Emma are buried in Elmgrove Cemetery, Auglaize County, Ohio.(11)  Emma was born in Auglaize County, the daughter of Thomas and Amanda (Good) Scott according to the county history.(12) Mary Kishler has her birth date as 16 December 1873. She lists their children with their birth dates.
According to the 1880 census, he was a policeman at that time. His middle name appears to have been Thomas. Charles T. Scott was born 1823 in Maryland, to parents David Scott and Ann C. McElfresh-Hall Scott. David's first wife died in 1818 giving birth to a son. Ann's first husband died in 1817. David and Ann married in 1820 in Baltimore, Maryland. David was hired to supervise the construction of the National Road in the Ohio section. The family moved to Zanesville and showed up in the 1830 census. It appears that Charles did not marry till he was 46, and his bride, Amanda (Good) Green,  was a widow with one girl.  Edward Hodges states that he has only been able to find that Charles and Amanda had the one child,  Emma G. Scott.

History of Auglaize County, Ohio, Pages 604, 605, 606

    W. Newton Dingledine, veteran grain dealer of Buckland, former mayor of that town, for many years clerk of Logan Township, now living retired at his pleasant home in Buckland, is a native Buckeye and has lived in this state all his life, a resident of Auglaize County since he was seven years of age, a period of sixty-five years, and is thus one of the best known men in the county.  Mr. Dingledine was born in Champaign County, Ohio on November 3, 1850 and is a son of John and Clara (Caldwell) Dingledine who became residents of this county some years after that date and whose last days were spent here.  John Dingledine was a native of the Old Dominion, born in Shenandoah County, Virginia, and was a son of Philip and Mary (Barrington) Dingledine, both of whom also were born in Virginia, members of Colonial families, and whose last days were spent in Champaign County, Ohio.  Philip Dingledine was a farmer, landowner and proprietor of a saw mill in Champaign County.  John Dingledine grew to manhood in his native state and was there married.  When thirty-one years of age he came to Ohio and located in Champaign County, where he remained until October, 1857 when he came to Auglaize County with his family and settled on a tract of 176 acres he had bought west of the Auglaize River in Logan Township, this tract including all of the northeast quarter of Section 34 of that township, two miles north of where Buckland came into being when the railroad presently came along.  He established his home on that tract there in the woods and entered upon the task of clearing the same and making a farm out of it, but these labors were interrupted by his death less than six years thereafter, his death occurring in February, 1863.  His wife died in that same year and three children thus were doubly orphaned.  Two other children of this family had died previously.  Of the surviving children but two now are living, the subject of this sketch and his brother, John Dingledine.  The deceased children of this family were Samuel, Mary and Charles.  It will be noted by a comparison of dates above that W. Newton Dingledine was but seven years of age when he came to this county with his parents in 1857 and he was thirteen when he was bereaved by the death of his parents.  He was taken into the household of John Gochenour, one of the leading farmers of that neighborhood and there grew to manhood, completing his schooling in the local schools.  Upon the attainment of his majority, Mr. Dingledine came into his inheritance, his share of his father’s estate and he became a practical farmer, looking after the interests of his farm—a part of the old home place north of Buckland—and the grain interests he meanwhile was developing, until 1881 when he left the farm and moved to Buckland where he built a house and where he since has been making his home.  It was in 1882 that Mr. Dingledine became engaged in the grain business at Buckland and became proprietor of the grain elevator there.  That was four or five years after the completion of the railroad and it soon became apparent that Buckland was a good shipping point.  For more than twenty-five years he remained in the grain business at Buckland and St. Mary’s and then in 1909 he sold his elevator there and bought the grain elevator at Glynwood, about midway between Buckland and St. Mary’s and another excellent shipping point in that part of the county, and continued in business at that point until his retirement in 1921.  Mr. Dingledine is a deacon in the Christian church at Buckland.  He is a Democrat and has been serving as clerk of Logan Township with exception of an interruption of service during several terms from 1886 to 1893 ever since the year 1876, this probably constitutes the record of length of individual public service in this county.  During the period of interruption in his service as township clerk, Mr. Dingledine was as township treasurer, so that his record may be regarded as one of continuous public service for more than forty-one years.  He also rendered service as mayor of Buckland for six years, was treasurer of the town, and for some time also was a member of the township board.  On December 10, 1871, W. N. Dingledine was united in marriage to Mary Jane Neese, daughter of Shen and Mary (May) Neese, and to this union was born one child, a daughter, Clara A., who married Marvin K. Clover of St. Mary’s and has four children:  Cade, Mary, Jesse and June.  Mary Clover married Willis Kishler and has one child, a son, Marvin.

John H. Gochenour.  One of the finest farms in Logan Township is owned by Mr. John H. Gochenour, and is situated on section 10.  This tract of land consists of four hundred and fifty acres, nearly all of which is improved and is the result of industry and perseverance.  Our subject is a native Virginian, born in Shenandoah County, as were also his parents, Abraham and Catherine (Neff) Gochenour.  Both parents were esteemed members of the Lutheran Church and died in that faith, the father in 1839 and the mother in 1854.  They were honorable Christian people and were classed among the best citizens of their community.  After the death of the father, the mother married John Dingledine, a native of the Old Dominion.
The original of this notice was born in the year 1835 and when but a child was left fatherless.  He was educated in the common schools of Shenandoah County and made his home with his mother and step father until eighteen years of age.  In 1849, he immigrated to Ohio and began learning the carpenter’s trade in Champaign County.  He selected his wife in the person of Miss Sarah C. Weaver, and their nuptials were celebrated in 1858.  Her father, William Weaver, was a native of Champaign County, Ohio.  After their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Gochenour moved to Logan Township, Auglaize County, Ohio and settled on the farm now owned by our subject.  This land was then very different from the fertile and cultivated fields of the present day, for it was covered with wood and very few improvements had been made.  Mr. Gochenour erected a log cabin and in this he and his ambitious and economical young wife began their career as pioneers.  Mr. Gochenour cleared seventy five acres of this farm and in 1861 he erected a good substantial frame house in which he is now living.  Year by year, as his means allowed, he added to the original tract of land, until he is now the owner of four hundred and fifty acres of excellent land, all the fruits of his exertions, coupled with that of his esteemed and agreeable helpmate.
Their union was blessed by the birth of four children, only two now living, Elva A. and Jeanetta, both of whom were thoroughly educated in the common schools and in colleges.  The former is living on a farm near the old home and the latter resides at Versailles, Darke County, Ohio.  Mr. and Mrs. Gochenour are members of the Christian Union Church and are zealous and active workers of the same.  In his political career, our subject has always been a stanch Democrat and his first Presidential vote was cast for James Buchanan.  He has been Township Clerk for several years, has also held the position of Land Appraiser and Supervisor, and in fact, has held all the offices of the Township, discharging the duties of each and all with credit himself and to the evident satisfaction of the people.
Although he began his career in Auglaize County a poor boy, all enterprises prospered in his hands, and especially with agricultural pursuits did he seem exactly suited.  With care and perseverance has he attended to his adopted vocation and with energy and thoroughness, until successful results have bee reaped and he is now one of the wealthy and substantial men of the county.  He has the confidence and respect of his neighbors to an unlimited degree and is universally liked.

JOHN M. CLOVER

Pennsylvania may consistently be termed the mother state of the petroleum industry and within the borders of that historic old commonwealth have been trained many of the men who have become prominent and influential in connection with the development of the oil and gas fields in the newer fields. In Pennsylvania Mr. CLOVER gained his initial experience in the oil industry when a mere lad, and he has put this experience into effective use in the Tulsa oil fields of Oklahoma, to which district he came while this section was still part of Indian Territory. He maintains his residence in the City of Tulsa, with business offices at 301-303 Unity Building, and is successfully concerned with contracting and producing operations in the Tulsa oil fields, the while he stands forth also as one of the liberal and progressive citizens of the favored section of the state.
Mr. Clover was born at Venango County, Pennsylvania, on the 11th, of October, 1874, and is a son of Henry B. and Agnes E. (NEELEY) Clover, the former of whom was born in Venango County, Pennsylvania, in 1830 and the latter in Clarion County, that state, in 1843. The father died in 1904, and the mother still maintains her home in Ohio. Of the seven children all but one still survive.
The public schools of Mountainville, Venango County, Pennsylvania, afford to John M. Clover the advantages through which he laid the foundation for the board and practical education which he has since rounded out in connection with his association with men and affairs. When but thirteen years of age he found employment in the operation of pumping machinery at the oil wells of Pennsylvania, and later he was engaged in drilling wells. In his native state he finally became superintendent of oil leases at the age of twenty-six he engaged in contracting in the Pennsylvania oil fields. In 1901 he became of the organizers of the Iona Drilling Company, and of the same he has been president from the time of its incorporation. This company initiated operations in the oil fields of Kansas and Oklahoma, and in 1903 Mr. Clover removed from Ohio to Independence, Kansas, where he was engaged in oil producing until 1907, when he sold his business in that state and established his residence in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He has come to the Tulsa oil fields in 1904 and instituted operations. Upon locating at Tulsa in 1907, he organized the Iron Mountain Oil Company, of which he has since been president and which has developed a substantial business in producing oil. Mr. Clover is an adept in all details of the oil industry and his long varied experience make his dictum authoritative in this connection. He accompanied his parents on their removal to Ohio and was identified with oil operations in that state prior to his removal to the West.
Mr. Clover is independent in politics and gives his support to men and measures meeting the approval of his judgment. At St. Mary's, Ohio, he still retains affiliation with Mercer Lodge NO. 121, Ancient Free & Accepted Masons; at Independence, Kansas, he holds membership in Independence Chapter, Royal Arch, Masons, and Independence Commandery, Knights Templars and at Fort Scott, that state, he is affiliated with and has received the thirty-second degree in the consistory of the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite. At Tulsa he is a member of Akdar Temple, Ancient Arabic Order of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine, and Tulsa Lodge No. 946, Benevolent & Protective Order of Elks, besides which he is affiliated with the Knights of Pythias.
On the 11th of April, 1903, Mr. Clover wedded Miss Golda RANSBOTTOM, who was born in Allen County, Ohio, and they have three sons -- Jack, Edward and Harold.
