Catherine Clover and John Jones
Catherine daughter of Philip Clover and Mary Cooper

Sara Christjohn, whose husband was descended from this group has shared some valuable information with me for which I am extremely grateful.

Catherine Clover, born ca. 2 September 1783, as she died 14 September 1851, aged 68 years 12 days, buried in Seceder Cemetery where her stone reads, Catherine Jones, wife of John.  She married 16 April 1805, John Jones, born ca. 10 February 1781, as he died 24 December 1858, aged 77 years 10 months 14 days, buried in Seceder Cemetery, Clarion County, Pennsylvania.

The 1948 reading of Catherine's tombstone has her death in 1861.  The second reading from the newspaper article has her death happening in 1851. See the Seceder Cemetery Page under Pennsylvania on this website. I have not read the tombstone myself, but Sara tells me that family records give a death date of 14 September 1851. Therefore I am using that.

According to family lore, John was the eldest son of Peter Jones, born Switzerland ca. 1745, who married Rebecca Scott.  Peter was youngest son of Abraham Jones, born ca. 1700 in Switzerland.  Abraham came to America landing in Philadelphia with his 3 sons, Peter, Daniel and Isaac in 1752.  Peter's wife, Rebecca Scott, was of Scotch aristocracy.  She was disowned for marrying beneath her status.  Peter and Rebecca had 4 girls and 6 boys.

From the DAR records National # 241270, Peter Jones was a private in Captain James Reed Company of the 4th Batt., Lancaster County Militia.,Col James Burd esq Commander. The submitter shows the following family line:  John Jones-Catherine Clover/Samuel Jones-Elizabeth McGonigle.  Peter also had a son, Isaac.

Jones, Peter, died 17 May 1829, aged 77 yr, buried Seceder Cemetery
Jones, Rebecca, d. 27 June 1832, aged 73 yr, buried Seceder Cemetery.

John Jones served under Generals Orr and W. H. Harrison at Fort Meggs in War of 1812.    John's father and grandfather (Peter and Abraham) who were both locksmiths as well as gunsmiths, and were pressed into service when the Revolutionary War broke out.  Family notes also stated that Abraham's father also was a gunsmith, but did not give his name. He  apparently died in Switzerland.  This document Sara has says the Jones family was originally Welch and were from Wales.
This is information from a typed document furnished by Bob Chistjohn's grandmother, Hattie Mae (Elder) Newhouse several years ago.  It tells a lot about the Jones family. Hattie was born 1873, died 1950.

Isaiah Jones
Query: Twila Smith, TSmith1620@aol.com
She had a query in the Clover Family Exchange, in Volume one,  issue 2, page 9, regarding Nulph- Jones. She was trying to prove the maiden name of Isaiah Jones’s wife, Margaret. Margaret, born ca. 1827, married three times after his death. His name is spelled in various ways, Isaih or Isaiah. He was the son of John Jones and Catherine Clover of Clarion Township, Clarion County, Pennsylvania. After 35 years of searching, she has proven that Isaiah Jones was married to Margaret Potter, not Margaret Nulph. Margaret Potter was the daughter of Robert and Jane Potter. She asked me to publish this information so that anyone working on the John Jones-Catherine Clover line will have the correct maiden name for the wife of Isaiah Jones.
She is interested in a DAR application for Carrie Jones who was a granddaughter of Isaiah Jones. Twila believes Carrie may have joined the DAR through the Clover line. Can anyone give her any information about this DAR line?

James Jones--21 February 1901--On Saturday last James Jones died at his residence in Strattanville, this county, after a critical illness of two weeks.  About seven years ago, while crossing a bridge at the mouth of Millcreek, the horse he was driving backed the carriage over the bridge and the deceased sustained injuries at that time from which he never fully recovered and which are believed to have shortened his life.  James Jones was born 21 September 1823 in what is now Clarion Township, Clarion County and there and in Strattanville borough lived all his life, with the exception of a few years he spent when a young, unmarried man traveling and working in the distant west.  Dying 16 February 1901, he was therefore aged 77 years, 4 months, and 26 days.  His father’s name was John Jones and his mother’s maiden name Catherine Clover.  Their family consisted [of] ten children, 6 boys and 4 girls, the two youngest being James, the deceased and his sister, Sarah. He is survived by one brother, Samuel Jones, aged 84, who lives in Iowa and his sister Sarah, who resides in Strattanville.  James Jones was a master carpenter, one who strove to follow the scriptural injunction: “Study to show thyself a workman that needeth not to be ashamed,” and was a very industrious, hard working man for many years. He was a member of the M. E. Church of Strattanville for about 46 years. On the 16 October 1856, he was married to Jane E. Cookson.  To them were born 8 children, three of whom have preceded the deceased to the spirit land.  He is survived by his widow and the following children, viz: Mrs. J. D. Aaron of Westernport, MD, Mrs. E. K. West of Pittsburgh, PA, E. F. Jones of Lima, West Virginia, Mrs. J. C. Young and J. P. Jones of Strattanville.
In 1852 James Jones, the deceased, in company with the late John P. Jones of Strattanville, and two others, left Madison, Wisconsin, where they had been working at the carpenter trade, and traveled overland with ox teams to Oregon and thence to California in search of gold.  On the way they were joined by many others going in the same direction with ox teams.  The trip of James Jones and his three companions lasted from April 19th to September 27th, 1852, a period of over five months.  The deceased kept a daily memoranda of that trip and the book in which he kept such memoranda is well preserved and highly prized by his children.  The funeral took place on Monday, the 18th inst. at 2 pm with Rev. Charles Whippo, pastor of the Strattanville M.E. Church conducting the obsequies.  There was a large audience. James Jones stood very high among his neighbors.  His word was considered as good as his bond and wherever he was known he was regarded as a man of undoubted honesty of purpose.  He has gone to the undiscovered country with a clean, a pure record, as far as morals can discern.  For more than a half century he was a member of Mingo Lodge, IOOF, of Strattanville.

Sarah Jones, born September 1829, resided Strattonville.
