The Bible Record of John Metler Clover

I was sent a photocopy of the first page of the John Metler Clover family bible by Grant Clover, descendant of John Sumpter Clover, one of the sons of John Metler Clover. The actual bible is no longer in existence, having been destroyed in a fire back in the 1950s. However, the flyleaf which had the writing on it was saved because it had been taken out of the bible.  All of the names and dates appear to have been written by one person, probably at one time.  Note that there are no relationships stated in this list of names and I would point out that the John Clover at the top with the year 1773 is not identified.  This person shows up on various lists as the son of John Peter Clover which would have been quite a trick since John Peter died some years earlier. I cannot tell you who this John is.  I continually see this entry of John Clover married to Mary Metler in Clover data.  However, I have never seen any actual facts which come close to matching this. I think it should be examined as a puzzle.  Please note that the date and the name are written, but nothing else so 1773 may not be a birth date.  Could it be a marriage date? A transcript of this bible was published in the Clover Family Exchange, Volume 6, issue 1, pages 1-2,  however, I thought you might like to see a copy of the actual record. I know I was excited to see it. John Metler Clover was the son of Paul Clover and Nancy Metler and grandson of John Peter Clover. One serious point here is that the bible is surely very old.  We do not know the date, but certainly old. This is the earliest written mention of Mary Pierson that I have seen. She appears on some group sheets as May.  This is clearly Mary, for whatever that is worth.

The scan of the bible page was sent to me by Grant Clover in 2001.  Grant Clover is now deceased.  He told me that it was given to him by his grandmother, Flora Ellis Clover. Flora L. Ellis married 3 November 1874, John Clover in Grundy County, Illinois. They moved to Kansas where they had six children, two of whom died young. John Sumpter Clover died in 1916.

A transcription of the second page of the bible record was published in the Clover Family Exchange by Bob and Marguerite Clover  Vol. 6 Issue 1 July 1991. Sent in by Grant and Beverly Clover of Yuba, California.  I do not have a photocopy of the original page. This is just what was published. There are two entries which I believe to contain errors.  I don't know if the errors are in the bible or if they were a matter of typos in the newsletter.

From the Family Bible another page on Marriages and Deaths
The list on Marriages:

John M. Clover married Mary Williams on March 4, 1817.
    J. M. Clover married Nancy Sumpter on February 11, 1830. [sic-He married her in 1840.]
John M. Clover married Martha M. Lewis on December 27, 1840.

The list on Deaths follows on the same page:

Mary Clover died October 11, 1834 (first wife of John Metler Clover) [sic-She more likely died in 1839.]
Nancy Clover died November 4, 1840 (second wife of John, married only 11 months)[sic-They were married less than 9 months.]
    John M. Clover died May 7, 1857
William Clover died September 12, 1839
Jackson Clover died January 2, 1893
Martha M. Clover died January 2, 1893 (third wife of John Metler Clover)

Grant Clover points out that this Bible record clarifies the birth of John Sumpter Clover on November 10, 1841.  It occurred after the death of Nancy Sumpter Clover on November 4, 1840, and undoubtedly establishes his Mother as Martha Minerva Lewis who married John Metler Clover on December 27, 1840.
