Eli Clover
Eli Clover is thought to have been the son of
William Clover and Nancy Freeman because he was in the household of
William Clover in the 1850 census. Unfortunately, there are several
Clover males who appear to have died young in Arkansas. It is just
barely possible that William, as head of the Clover family in the area,
adopted some of the children. It it not a total certainty that
William’s children are proven. As
far as I
know he did not leave any estate records proving his children. I
would be eager to talk to anyone who has the Clark County Probate
Records.
Eli married and left many Clover descendants. Eli
Clover, aged 22, married Matilda Pebsworth, aged 21, on 29 October
1851, by G. L. Manning, JP, Clark County, Arkansas, Clark County
Marriage Book C: 208. According to Susie (Clover) Wagner, Matilda
Pebsworth was born ca. 1830, Alabama, daughter of Henry and Patsy
McCann Pebsworth. Matilda Clover died 3 April 1904, and was buried in
Globe Cemetery, Coal County, Oklahoma. Globe Cemetery is between
Coalgate and Calvin, Oklahoma. Records for this cemetery are on line
at: http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/ok/coal/cemeteries/globe.txt

There are some mentions of Matilda as the widow of a
soldier in the court records. The index to the court records is on
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~clover/arkansascourt.html I do
not know what the records actually say.
There is an excellent website on the Confederate
Troops of Arkansas. http://www.couchgenweb.com/civilwar/4btncoc.html
According to this site, Eli Clover enlisted as a private in the
Confederate Army, Company C 4th Battalion Arkansas Infantry, on 12
October 1861 at Little Rock, Arkansas. He died 3 February 1862 at
Columbus, Kentucky. He enlisted with Josiah Clover, Private, enlisted
12 October 1862 at Little Rock, Arkansas. Josiah died 30 January 1862
at Columbus, Kentucky, just days before Eli.
Pebsworth Family
Matilda
Pebsworth was the daughter of Henry
Pebsworth, who was born between 1790 and 1800, according to the
1840
census. He died before the 1850 census. He was in
Clark County, Arkansas in 1840. Matilda's mother was
Patsy
McCann
according to the many Native American records on this subject.
She was born ca. 1790 probably in MS. She died between 1850
and 1860. She is marked as deaf and dumb because she could not
speak in the 1850 census.
All of the members of the family over 20 in the 1850 census were
marked as not able to read or write.

Pebsworth Family: This family has been very
highly researched by people who are as dedicated to Pebsworth families
as I am dedicated to Clovers. I don't know personally what is correct
and what is not. She had married been married to prior to Henry
Pebworth but left no known children from that marriage.
This material is from records
provided by Charles and Dorothy Pebworth taken directly from the Dawes
Commission Report
Note : WM Clover
Henry Pebsworth was a member of
the Choctaw Tribe by marriage.
In 1831 according to terms of the Treaty of Dancing Rabbit Creek, Henry
applied for and was granted 1100 ac. of land on the Tombigbee River
which was on the eastern edge of the Choctaw Nation. This was in
Alabama, John Pebworth was born there in 1835. The land was patented to
Henry in 1842 by the Govement. But Henry had aready left for the New
Choctaw Nation with a group of Indians, they stopped near Curtis,
Arkansas, Henry was killed in a Hunting Party in 1842.
Under the provisions of Article 14 of the Treaty of the U.S. with the
Choctaw Indians of September 27, 1830 (7 Stat.L.,333), there was
allotted to Henry Pebworth, of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, as the head of a
family, for himself and 6 children, three sesction of land described as
the whole of Section 27, fractional Section 22, NE/4 and E/2 of SE/4
Section 21, E/2 and NE4 of Section 15, all in T. 22S., R. 17 W.,
containing 1947 acres. Said land is in the neighborhood of the Tom
Bigby River, The reservation was approved on October 13, 1838, and
patented to said Henry Pebworth on May 14, 1842. This was written in a
letter to W. M. Clover, Dec. 15, 1914 by E. B. Meritt, Asst.
Comissioner of Indian Affairs, Washington, D.C
The youngest Pebsworth child in
the 1850 census was a son of Joseph Pebsworth.
I am told a good overview of
this family is on
this page although there are some errors:
http://www.angelfire.com/tx2/kainwhitten/pebworthwhitaker.html
Patsy was aupposed to have been married before she married Henry
Pebsworth, but I don't know the details. She was apparently
deaf. The family was brought up with sign language.
There are wonderful fascinating stories about this family most of
which are on the internet. Please read them if you are descended
from one of the Pebsworth family. The name apparently has a lot
of different spellings. The most common mispelling is is
Pebworth.

Children of Eli Clover and
Matilda
Pebsworth:
There were five children in their household in the 1860
census. But one of these children may not have been theirs because in
the 1900 census where she was living with Josiah Manley Clover, she
said that she had had 4 children, 3 of whom were living in 1900.
1) Melissa J. Clover, born ca. 1852, Arkansas.
2)
Robert
Lucious Clover, born ca. 1853, Arkansas.
3. Mary S. Clover born ca. 1855, Arkansas. Page 125 Susan A.
Clover aged 21 married 12 January 1876, William Slaton aged 23. Clark
County, Arkansas Book G: 90 I
am wondering if this could be Mary S. and S. might stand for
Susan.
4) Telitha Clover, born ca. 1858, Arkansas. Ronald Vern Jackson,
Mortality Schedules of Arkansas, 1870, (Bountiful, Utah: Accelerated
Indexing Systems, 1979). Telitha Clover died August, in Clark County,
aged 13, female born Arkansas, died of brain disease. [Telitha, aged 2
years, appeared with Eli Clover in the 1860 Clark County census.]
5) Josiah Manley Clover, born ca. Feb 1859/1860, Arkansas.
According to
Susie Wagner, he died 1 February 1916. Other sources say January
1915. . Susie says that all of these
marriages are not his, but I think that is an error. I don't know
who else these marriages would have belonged to. I think he simply
had bad luck with wives
who died. It was difficult to survive as a one parent family so
men remarried soon after a wife's death. This was not
disrespectful, it was just the way of life then. The
children in the 1900 census appear to have been the children of the
second marriage.
Josiah married (first) J. M. Clover, aged 23, married 27 January 1887,
Ellie Reynolds aged 17.

Josiah married (second)
J. M. Clover, aged 30, married 13 February 1890, Mecia L. Karr aged 16,
