Census Maps These maps show the divisions of the state into counties for each of the censuses from 1790 on to 1930 and how those counties changed. At the bottom of the page for your state there is also a discussion of existing federal, teriitorial, and state censuses for each state. So before you spend hours looking for something, make sure it exists. http://www.negenealogy.com/ngo03.htm

The maps are free although there are links to paid sites. There are also free printable forms on this page.

Immigration Problems:

Ellis Island
Between 1892 and 1924, 22 million emigrants and crew came through the port of New York.  The ship manifests are online at: www.Ellisisland.org You have to join to use it but joining is free.  Copies can be ordered for a fee.  Or you can order the microfilm at your local Family History Center and print it out from the film.

However, the search feature is not as good as it might be.  If you have trouble finding someone, try the following search on Jewishgen.  It is useful for all emigrants, Jewish or not.
http://www.jewishgen.org/databases/EIDB/

The ever popular myth that people's surnames were changed at Ellis Island.  See this great article on the subject.
