Pennsylvania
Probate Records
These are not all of the Clover
Probate Records in Pennsylvania. It is just what I
have now.
If you have a copy of a Clover will or estate in
Pennsylvania, or
anywhere else, please let me know. The following article is
based upon an article I researched, wrote, edited and published in the Clover Family Chronicles,
Spring 2004, Volume 1, Issue 3, copyright 2004 June C. Byrne.
I
have added the material on Centre County which I just acquired.

Armstrong
County, Pennsylvania Will Index: vol 1, page 108. Philip Clover of Clarion
Township, There
are no other Clovers in the index, 1805-1900.
I do not have a copy of Philip Clover's will. However, it was
printed in full in The
Clover Family Exchange
2:1:6.
- 2 February
1828, Armstrong
County, Pennsylvania: In the name of God, Amen, I, Philip Clover of
Clarion Township, Armstrong County, and state of Pennsylvania, being in
good health of body and of sound mind and memory, praised be God for
the same and being desirous to settle my worldly affairs whilst I have
strength and capacity so to do, do make and publish this my last will
and testament, hereby revoking and making void all wills by me at any
time heretofore made: and first and principally I commit my soul into
the hands of my creator who gave it, and my body to the earth
to
be interred in a decent like manner at the discretion of my executors
hereinafter mentioned; as to such worldly estate wherewith it hath
pleased God to entrust me, I dispose of the same as follows, viz: First
it is my will and I do order that all my just debts and funeral
expenses be duly paid and satisfied as soon as conveniently can be
after my decease; and I give and bequeath to my dear wife Mary Clover
the whole of what estate I possess, real and personal, all or mixed, to
wit; during her natural life and at her decease,(in case she survives
me) the whole of my estate real and personal or mixed at that time
either in law or equity of what kind or nature whatsoever, to be by the
executors of this my last will and testament hereinafter mentioned sold
and conveyed to the purchaser or purchasers to the best advantage for
my children, excepting my son Gamaliel Clover to have his share or part
of the tract of land I now live on adjoining lines with Robert Wilson
and john Love, given and conveyed to him as his equal share with the
remainder of my heirs. The remainder of my estate real and personal as
above stated to be sold and divided equally to my children to wit:
John, Peter, Philip, James and Gamaliel as above provided for and to my
daughters Martha Smith, Catherine Jones, and Nancy McCoy to be all
equal shares excepting my son Nathan which is my will that he only is
to have one half as much as the others. In case of any of the
children dying before they receive their shares, their part to be
equally divided among their children as soon as they are capable of
receiving it or comes of age to be put to interest for their use. And
lastly I nominate, constitute and appoint James Clover and Samuel C.
Orr of the said county of Armstrong and state aforesaid to be the
executors of this, my last will and testament, hereby
revoking
all other wills, legacies and bequest has by me heretofore made and
declaring this and no other to be my last will and testament. In
witness whereof I have hereunto et my hand and seal this second day of
February in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and
twenty-eight. Signed, sealed, and published, pronounced, and declared
by the said testator as his last will and testament in the presence of
us, who in his presence and at his request have subscribed as
witnesses. Witnesses: John Clover and Martha Clover. Proven 24 July
1830.
From Armstrong County, Pennsylvania,
copy sent
by Carole Dehnal. She says some material on John Roll gives
him a
child named Kitty Roll. In actual fact, her name was Hetty Roll. [Note:
Hannah Roll married Nathan Clover, son of Philip Clover and Mary
Cooper. Sally was married to Philip Clover, son of Paul
Clover.] I have a copy of this will.

Centre
County, Pennsylvania
Probate Records
LDS FHL
microfilm, #1029887 Centre County,
Pennsylvania, Index to Register's and Orphan's Court Docket,
1800-1949 Vol A-E On page 102 of this film, I found this
information:
Paul Clover estate number
873, date of letter of Administration, 30 April 1812,
Administrator, Nancy
Clover [Note she signed with a mark. Few women could read and
write then.]
name of those giving
sureties Joseph Boon and William Tate
administration bond book, page 106, register's docket entry A 27
I contacted the Centre County Library
and Historical Museum, at
the Central Pennsylvania District Library Center. According
to
the information on the Genweb site, they hold the early estate records
for Centre County. They sent me copies of the bond and the
estate
inventory. They tell me that this is all that is in the estate records
for Paul Clover's estate. I requested a complete search for any other
estate records on him and guaranteed costs. Unfortunately, nothing else
was found.
These are primarily interesting because
of their date. As
far as I know, almost everyone gives a death date for Paul Clover of
1820 which is the date in the county history. However, you
will
note that the bond is dated 30 April 1812. This is NOT a typo or error.
The inventory is dated 9 May 1812. The heading states that it
is
the inventory and appraisement of the goods and chattles, rights and
credits of Paul Clover of Chincleclamousche, Clearfield
County.
This confused me so I requested
clarification from the library. According to the librarian at the
Centre County,
Library, Paul lived in Clearfield County so that's where the inventory
was done. Clearfield County didn't have their own judicial system yet
so Centre County served it as a circuit court. All of
Clearfield
was in Chincleclamousche Twp. when it was first settled.
Copies of
his estate can be found on the Estate
of Paul Clover pages. if you have a slow
modem and need copies, please let me know.
There is a book, Wills of Centre County, Pennsylvania, which has no Clovers in it.

Clarion County Probate Index
including Death Dates:
I checked
for Clovers in the
Clarion County Probate Index on FHL microfilm no. 1315276, item
2. Naturally, I found the wills listed above.
However,
there were also a number of estates for Clovers who died intestate
(without a will) and those who died later. Deceased is on the left,
first date is date of death, second date is date of letters of
administration, the name on the right is the administrator. [volume and
page of will]
