Bitten by Copperhead Snake, William Clover adopts Heroic Remedy and is out of danger
Orange, New Jersey, May 30, While gathering herbs in a swamp near Irvington, this morning, William Clover was bittten by a large Copperhead snake.  Clover was pulling up a plant and stuck his hand into the earth, when he felt a severe pain, ad on drawing his hand away found the snake fastened to his finger, its fangs holding fast in the flesh.
Clover cut out the flesh around the wound with a knife and sucked the blood, but as the hand and arm began to swell, went to Newark as quickly as possible and had his injury attended by Dr. B. A. Robinson.  After a few hours the swelling subsiced and no serious results are expected.

Is this a New York Clover?

One of my friends who knows I research Clovers sent me this and I am not sure what to do with it so I will put it onto your desks.  In a book called, Upstate New York in 1766, there is a tax list for Livingston Manor in 1766.  Livingston Manor was in Columbia County which is between Greene County and Connecticut.  On page 87, there is a John Clavery listed.  There are no other Clavery records in New York at that time. It was fairly common penmanship for a tail to be put on the end of a name. Since all I have seen is the transcription, I have to wonder.  So could this be a Claver connected to Johan Nicholas Claver, father of William Clover?  Or could this be a Clover connected to John Clover of Greene County?  Or someone else?  I have started searching Columbia County records and have found no other records which might refer to this person.  Any ideas?

Albany County Deed Records

I have been interested in Albany County because there are two sets of Clovers in the area. John Clover lived in Greene County which was formed from Albany County.
John Clover, Junior, of Greene County, New York sold some land around 1808 and I wondered where he got it.  Greene County, New York was formed from Ulster and Albany Counties in 1800, so I checked the Albany deed records. Both Windham and Durham are in the northern part of Greene County which would have been in Albany County prior to the formation of Greene County.   The only possible Clover entries in the Albany deed records were for Nicholas and Susannah Claver.  Since their children changed the spelling of the name to Clover, I have also been  interested in this Claver pair. I have periodically tried, with absolutely no success, to find out if John Clover of Connecticut was connected with them.  All records I have so far found for Nicholas and Susannah have their name as Claver.  Their children's records are mostly as Clover.

FHL 463545, Index to Grantees in Albany County, New York, 1630-1894, page 1197: Stephen Van Rensselaer, granted land to Nicholas Claver, et al, on 10 August 1769, recorded 31 July 1795, Volume 13: 641. W. ½ of Lot 2, N. Of Abraham Ten Broeck’s land, Manor of Rensselaerwyck. Map by John R. Bleecher.
FHL 464897, Grantor index to Albany County, New York Land Records, 1630-1894, page 1197: Nicholas Claver and wife Susannah, granted land to John Vosburgh on 24 March 1789, recorded 25 March 1789. Land recorded in Volume 12: 120, W. ½ of lot no. 2, N. By Abraham Ten Broeck’s lot, near Jan Fonda’s land, 8. By street, E. By John G. Lansingh’s lot, Manor of Rensselaerwyck.

There are no other Clover, Claver etc entries in these indexes.

Records of the Reformed Dutch Church in New Amsterdam and New York[City], Baptisms from 1 January 1731 to December 1800, Volume 2, (New York: The Society, 1902. Reprinted Upper Saddle River: The Gregg Press, 1968).
Volume one of the set is for earlier baptisms.  I checked this out and did not find anything of interest to us.  These volumes are only for baptisms.  I do not know if marriage records exist.  I tried to find them and failed. You may wonder at some of the spellings of individuals here.  The reason they are here is the entry for Pieter Clover.  I have thought that this is very likely to be John Peter Clover of New Jersey. If so, he was the first of his group to anglicize his name.  I believe that there is a connection between all of them.  I originally published most of this information about 6 years ago in one of my newsletters. At that time I was dependent on the items I found in the New York Genealogical  Society newsletter.  Now that I have seen the book, I have found a few more entries which surely belong to the same group.

I somehow did not get home with copies of pages 41 and 60.  They have additional mentions of Catherina and Maria.

From the marriage records of the same church:
Samuel Smith Purple, Index to the marriage records from 1639-1801 of the Reformed Dutch Church in New Amsterdam and New York. I took these from the book but they are digitalized on the fhc.org site if you look it up in the catalog. They seem to have a place of birth after the name.  I need a translation of these items.  Can anyone help? There is a date before and after the entry.  I am not sure what that means.

TURIN
Mr.and Mrs. G. Wellington Kentner quietly celebrated their golden wedding anniversary Sunday, March 11, at their pleasant home on the West road. G. Wellington Kentner and Miss Mary Clover were married at the home of the bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Adam Clover, in this village.  March 11, 1873, the Rev. E. S. Cheeseman, then pastor of the M. E. church, performing the ceremony.  The young couple went at once to the Kentner homestead on the West road, where they have since lived, loved and respected by their neighbors and friends.  Very few of their neighbors of fifty years ago are left.  Their two daughters, Mrs. Otis B. Brainard and Mrs. Elisabeth Hinckley, live at Big Stone City, S. D.,and could not be with their parents on this occasion.  Mr. and Mrs.Kentner were the recipients of many cards and letters of congratulations, among which was a letter of congratulation and a bouquet of flowers from the Presbyterian church in Turin.  Their many friends wish for them many more years of happiness together.
