Alford is what the newspaper says but I can find no record of such a
town in New York. This may be a typo from the newspaper.

Bitten by Copperhead Snake, William
Clover adopts Heroic Remedy and is out of danger
Orange, New Jersey, May 30, While
gathering herbs in a swamp near Irvington, this morning, William Clover
was bittten by a large Copperhead snake. Clover was pulling up a
plant and stuck his hand into the earth, when he felt a severe pain, ad
on drawing his hand away found the snake fastened to his finger, its
fangs holding fast in the flesh.
Clover cut out the
flesh around the wound with a knife and sucked the blood, but as the
hand and arm began to swell, went to Newark as quickly as possible and
had his injury attended by Dr. B. A. Robinson. After a few hours
the swelling subsiced and no serious results are expected.
