Clover
Family Mythology

In
my many years of researching Clover families, I have discovered that
most families have at least one mythological story floating around the
internet. It is very frustrating to me because they keep
getting sent to me by serious researchers who have been sucked in. It
results in a total waste of resources. People spend years
researching something that is not true. This means that they
are not looking in the right place and thus do not find what they
really need. The following myths are widely believed.
Myth
One:
Philip Clover married a Mary Cooper. There are many people
who seriously believe that she was descended from Astley Cooper.
She was not. Martha Jane Cooper who is believed to
have been the mother of Lewis Peter Clover of New York City, is also
widely believed to have been the granddaughter of Astley Cooper. Martha
was probably the daughter of an Ashley Coopeer.
Neither of these woman are descended from Astley
Cooper. Astley Cooper was born AFTER Mary so could not have been
her ancestor. Check this article on this subject
that I published in 2004.
Myth
Two
John Peter Clover is occasionally listed as a Quaker. In fact,
there is no evidence to support this and much evidence to dispute it.
See this article on the subject that I published in 2004.
Myth
Three
John Clover of Connecticut is widely believed to have married a
Sarah Collins in Massachusetts and/or a Mary Warner in New York.
See this article that I published in 2004.
Myth
Four
Philip Clover of
Frederick County, Virginia and Berkeley County, Virginia was NOT
married to a Shepherd or to Elizabeth VanMetre. He also did not have a
middle initial of A.
Myth Five
Sarah (Clover) Corbett did not have a middle initial or a middle name
of Bloom. I stronly suspect this myth came about because there is
a county history article where Paul Clover is mentioned as an uncle to
some Bloom children. However, they were the children of William
Bloom, who married Mary Roll. Paul's son, Philip Clover, married
Sally Roll, her sister. Both of these women are named in John Roll's
will in 1816. So Paul was in fact, the children's great
uncle, but it had nothing to do with Paul's sister Sarah.
