1840 Illinois State Census

These are off index cards at the state archives which Pat Vaseska copied and sent to me.  Neither of us has seen the originals. This is the index only and I do not know if there is more information in the actual census.

[In the 1860 Monroe County Census, there are some people who are missing, and Dorcas (Brownfield) Clover, widow of John Clover, appears twice. I found this second entry when I went back again to look for her son, William N. Clover, whom I still cannot find in the 1860 census. I point this out because it shows what problems censuses can be. I love them, and quote them, and chase them all over the place, but they are just not always reliable and I want to remind you of this. Note that the first set of data is better even though it was missing a person. Dorcas was actually born in Kentucky and these ages agree pretty much with known dates. But in the second one, we have names that are off, dates that are off, and Dorcas’ place of birth is wrong, but we have another person in this group. Lily is presumably Delilah Clover. The censuses were dated only 4 days apart so it is not likely they moved. The entries have two separate Post Offices, yet the same man took both censuses.]

1870 (partial listing)

1870 Census: Round Grove, Livingston, IL, Philip Clover, 40, IN; Arvilla, 39, PA; Emerson, 1?, IL; Sarah, 13, IL; Amos, 11, IL; Elmer, 9, IL; Soni, 7, IL;Ellen, 1, IL

1870 Monroe County, IL Township 2 Range 11, NARA M593-261, page 548:
Line 20, 40/40: ?s. M. Clover 32 IL farmer $300 personal property, Margaret 23 OH; Sarah 5 IL; Janette 2 IL; James born March 1870 IL.

Irrespective of the initials, I believe this is actually Isaac Newton Clover.  Margaret was Isaac’s first wife, whom he married in 1861 in St. Louis.  I am suspicious that Margaret’s age is not accurate. Isaac’s obituary mentioned that he was survived by two children from his first marriage, Sarah and Ida.  In the 1880 census he has a daughter Sarah, aged 15, and a daughter, Ida, aged 12.  So this Janette Clover was probably Ida.  Either Ida or Janette could have been a middle name. If the James in this census is Isaac’s son, he must have died young because he is not with Isaac in the 1880 census.  Isaac’s obituary did not deny that he had a child who did not survive him.
Note their are two Clover children in the next household.  Joseph Lacy and his wife, Catherine (Clover) Lacy, are farther down the same page. Commodore and Stephen Clover, Isaac’s nephews were living in the next household. I had to blow this way up to make sure that it was actually a Clover entry.  Until it is enlarged, the name looks more like Olsen.
