Rhonda
Clover sent me the following two items which are certainly
tantalizing. Remember that Arkansas was part of what of the
Missouri Territory at that time. Following the Louisiana Purchase,
negative rumors circulated about Governor Wilkinson. The
residents of the St. Louis area showed their support for
Wilkinson by sending letters to the president. This collection is
called the Wilkinson Memorial. The residents who signed the
letters lived in St. Louis, St. Charles (SC), St. Ferdinand (SF),
and Ste. Genevieve (SG). In addition, residents from Cape
Girardeau and New Madrid areas of the Louisiana Territory are
included; however, Cape Girardeau and New Madrid residents are
not indicated by a location designation. John Clover signed but
no location was given suggesting that he was in the Cape
Girardeau or New Madrid area about 1805. http://stlgs.org/DBgovernmentCensusMoTerritory1805.htm
The signature of John Clover was in section 11 of the list
of signers of the 1810 petition of land owners who feared losing
their land because of the legal changes after the Louisiana
Purchase. The entire record is on line at: http://showmethebitticks.com/other_doc/1810_land_petition_tc.htm
The lists, containing 986 signatures of Missouri Pioneers in the
year 1810, copied from the Territorial Papers of the United
States, Vol. XIV, Louisiana-Missouri Territory, 1806-1814, pages
382-397. Compiled by Clarence Edwin Carter, U.S. Gov. Printing
Office, 1949.
These two records are tantalizing because they tell us that a
John Clover was west of the Mississippi River by 1805.
We
know that the John Clover and Tabitha, his wife, signed a deed in
Monroe County on 17 July 1818. Did
he move back to Monroe
County after 1810? Is
this another John Clover? At the
present time, I do not think any conclusions can be drawn. Nevertheless,
it suggests that we need to do more research in these areas.
Winston De Ville, Mississippi
Valley Melange,
(Ville Platte, Louisiana, Monograph, 1995). This book includes
many of the early records of the Louisiana Purchase area. No
Clovers were found, however, the records are mostly from the 1700s.
That would probably have been too early.
However, with the
record above, it is clear that we cannot take this for granted.

Native American Records
Most of the Clovers with Native American blood lived
in Arkansas and later Oklahoma. However, they were out of the
Mississippi Choctaw group. Since the records cover several states, I
have put them all on the Native American page on the following page.

[Question to someone from this family. Is this correct or should it read Thomas Clover?]
THOMAS
Pvt. Clover THOMAS, now at home on leave from Fort Bliss, Tex., where
he's stationed with the 599th Anti-Aircraft battalion, has already had
half a year of overseas service. He was stationed at Kodiat, Alaska,
until the last of the Japs were ousted from that area. Pvt. THOMAS
lives in Scott county, and had been summoned home because of the
critical illness of his octogenarian grandfather, John CLOVER, pioneer
resident of the Clear Fork community. As the aged man is near the end
of his days, the soldier grandson came to Mena Sunday to wire for an
extension of furlough.

Cattle had to be branded and marked so that they could tell them apart.
Cattle can get out of fences, knock down fences, etc. And
some were on public land mixed together until they had a branding of
the calves in the spring or a roundup.

Query:
Searching for information regarding Nancy F. Clover/Francis Ann Clover,
who married Joseph S Phillips in 1859, in Clarke County, Arkansas. She
is thought to be the person listed as Francina with Joseph in 1860 Pike
County, Arkansas census. They lived next door to his parents, J.W.
Phillips. They came to Texas mid- 1860's. Did they have children?
Joseph is living with his father, James Phillips, Collin County, Texas
in 1870, no Francina listed. Any new info appreciated. Please contact
Patsy at prbgram@aol.com or contact me at junebyr@yahoo.com
According
to the Clarke County, Arkansas marriage records: Nancy F. Clover, 28,
married 1 December 1859, Joseph Phillips, 23, by T. J. Freeman, JP.
Book D: 132
This record probably refers to one of these two girls:
1850
Clark County, Arkansas Caddo Township, NARA M432 roll 25 page 202: 21
November 1850 Line 1: 175/175 William Clover 50 Farmer IL; Eli 20 AR;
Frances Ann 18 AR; Elizabeth 16 AR; Amanda 14 AR; Louis 12 AR; Ameranda
12 AR; Josiah 9 AR
1850 Clark County, Arkansas South Fork
Township, NARA M432 roll 25 Page 209A, continued to 209B: 2 December
1850 Line 42: 284/284 Hendrick A. White 67 farmer NC; Zilphy Clover 40
KY; Hendrick White, Jr. 31 KY; Hendrick W. Clover 18 labor AR; Isham
Clover 15 AR; Nancy Clover 13 AR; Priscilla 8 AR (Zilphy and Hendrick
White Jr are marked as not being able to read or write.)
1860
Pike County, Arkansas Caney Fork Township M653 Roll 47 Page 502: Joseph
Phillips 23 Tennessee; Franciana 23 Arkansas. [Note that she has gotten
younger in the census, probably because her husband was younger than
she was. She was 28 at her marrige the year before. They are living
next door to J. W. and Nancy Phillips, his parents.]
1870 Collin
County, Texas Precinct 3 M593 roll 1579 page 435: James Phillips 57 TN;
Nancy Phillips 49 TN; Joseph Phillips 33 TN, own 132 acres
Elizabeth 14 AR, John 8 AR, Joseph (jr) 8 AR; Maddison Phillips 20 TN
All
of these records seem to refer to the same person, even with the slight
descrepancies. So far no cemetery record for her has been found.
Then
we also have this Clark County, Arkansas marriage which no doubt is for
the other one. It could be either Francies Ann or Nancy.
Page 190 Nancy Clover married 7 August 1856, Titus Skinner. By James H. Crow, JP. Book C: 414.
1870
Clark County, Arkansas South Fork: Titus M. Skinner 36 AL farmer; Nancy
25 AR; Artomesa 13 AR; William 11 AR; Paralee 5 AR; Nancy 3 AR.
I
can't find any further records of these Skinners. If you know of them,
please let us know. Maybe we can eliminate one of the Nancy/Frances
Ann Clovers.
