Death Records

Arkansas Obituaries and Death Notices, 1869 to 1913

Allen B. Syler, compiler, Clark County, Arkansas Obituaries and Death Notices, 1869 to 1900, (Hot Springs, Arkansas: Arkansas Ancestors (B. J. McLane), 1991).  The obituaries are taken from the Arkadelphia [Arkansas] Southern Standard newspaper.  There are three volumes in this set.  The second volume covers 1901 to 1913 and has no Clovers in it.

Volume 1, Page 112: Hector Clover, died at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Clover, 8 miles west of town on the 21st inst. He was their only son. The deceased leaves a wife and two children. [That is 21 September 1895.] (25 October 1895, page 3 column 6.)

Volume 3 (1914 to 1921), page 14: Joseph M. Clover. While starting out to walk home yesterday morning, Joseph M. Clover, a resident of near Hollywood, dropped dead on the road outside the city limits.  G. W. Burns coming to town at about 8 o’clock saw him fall about a hundred yards in front of him and when he reached the fallen man, he was gasping his last breath.  Mr. Clover returned Tuesday from Oklahoma, where he had gone to sell some land, and though he seems to have been a man in good circumstances, was evidently going to walk to his home fifteen miles away.  He was about 70 years old, and had a wife and several children. He evidently had sudden attack of heart failure. (21 January 1918, page 1, column 4)

1850 to 1880 Mortality Schedules

These records were taken as a part of the federal censuses. The census taker was instructed to make a record of all person who had died in the previous twelve months. So when someone is in the 1880 census record, having died in October, this means that the person actually died in October 1879. That assumes that the census taker followed instructions.

Bobbie Jones McLane and Capitola Hensley Glazner, 1850 Mortality Schedules of Arkansas,  (Hot Springs National Park: Privately Published Manuscript, 1968). No Clovers found. Accelerated Indexing Systems published another book of the same records. There are no Clovers in it either.

She is missing from his household in Garland County in 1880. If this record is correct, she was older than she admitted to in the 1870 census.]

Clover, Child  October 1909
The following obituaries are on file at the Scott County Historical & Genealogical Society. Dates listed may be either the date of death or the date of the obituary. If a Funeral Home Card is included, that information is indicated in that column. Photocopies of these obituaries and (when available) funeral cards may be obtained by writing the Society at P.O. Box 1560, Waldron, AR 72958. The cost is $2.00 per individual and you need to include a stamped, self-addressed envelope and indicate that you are requesting these copies from the OBITUARY FILES. This is very important as the Society also has 13 volumes of published obituaries (listed elsewhere on this webpage) & your request will be returned unfilled if they are unable to locate the obituary. Please list the name and date exactly as it is listed.
