Court Records

According to the information of the Ouachita Baptist University, it is the repository for the early Clark County records. Circuit, Criminal, Civil, and Probate Records, as well as tax records from 1866, have been indexed by the Clark County Historical Association. You can write to the library for information on these entries. They will do look ups for a charge. These indexes are available on line at: http://www.obu.edu/library/countyrecords.htm

I have listed here all that I have so far found. There seems to be an overlap for some of this. I can't tell for sure what some of the records are because some of the titles are a little vague.

County Court Records

Pauline Williams Wright and Barbara McDow Caffee, compilers, Clark County, Arkansas; A Genealogical Source Book, Volume 2, (Baltimore, Maryland: Gateway Press, Inc, 1982). The book is reproduced on a set of five microfiche, FHL no. 6038467. If you order it into your local Family History Center, it will cost you less than a dollar. It includes extracted county court records from 1845 to 1858. There are a few fascinating glimpses of 19th century life, such as the 11 July 1846 payment of $3 to a Pleasant M. Osborn for killing a wolf on page 195.

Unfortunately, most of the county court records are just lists of delinquent taxpayers and items about individuals assigned to work on roads.   They contain a few interesting tidbits so I am including them here.  I am curious as to the identity of Lawson Clover.  I had never heard of him before. The name can’t be an error because it appears several times. Also note the problem of William Clover as road overseer. I wonder if he was ill and that was why he was excused. First page number refers to the page within the Source Book. The page number after the date is the location of the item in the original record.

Page 188: Tuesday 15 April 1845: (page 20) William Clover was to replace Allen Townsend, who served in 1844, as road overseer.

Page 190: Tuesday 15 July 1845 (page 27) William Clover summoned to appear and show cause why he should not be fined for neglect of duty as road overseer.

Page 191 Monday 11 October 1845 (page 34) Cases of Clark County vs. William Clover (and other names), each overseer was excused.

Page 193: 12 January 1846 ( page 45) Clark County vs. Persons who had failed to work on the road included Stephen L. Clover. The case was dismissed because he was found to have removed from the county.

Page 194: This is in the index, but I can’t find a Clover name here.

Page 202: 8 November 1847 (page 112) Delinquent tax list for 1847 included L. Clover.

Page 208: 12 November 1848 (page 172) Delinquent tax list for 1848 included Lawson Clover.           Page 212: 12 November 1849 (page 208) Delinquent tax list for 1849 included Lawson Clover.

Page 221: Thursday 14 November 1850, Delinquent tax list for 1850 included J. S. Clover.

Page 233: 12 November 1851 (page 298) Delinquent tax list for 1851 included J. L. Clover.

Page 244: Wednesday 10 November 1852 (page 311) Delinquent tax list includes Eli Clover, Lawson Clover, Adam Clover, and Clover [no first name given]

Page 254: 12 October 1853 (page 360) In case of State vs. Charles Galliher on trial for murder, fees were paid to jurors.  Juror list included W. H. Clover

Page 264: 1864, Delinquent tax list for 1853 includes S. T. Clover

Page 272 Monday 23 April 1855 (page 412) Delinquent tax list for 1854 includes J. L. Clover.

[These unfamiliar initials may well be S. L. Clover. I wish someone would check the actual record.  I suspect that the transcribers misread these entries.]

Page 289 25 May 1857 (page 478) William H. Clover presented accounts. [Perhaps for estate of William Clover?] Second delinquent tax list for 1856 included Eli Clover.  Note was made that William Clover had been listed in error.

Page 297 11 January 1858 (page 512) W. H. Clover appointed apportionment justice for road number 9 in Division K of Caddo Township.

Court Records 1834 to 1873

Meeks Etchieson, Clark County [Arkansas] Court Records, 1834-1873, Volumes 1-4, (Arkedelphia, Arkansas: Clark County Historical Association, 1993-1996].  Ray Thompson found these and sent me the following information. I would remind readers that these court records do not start until 1834 which is a little late to help solve the identity of the various very early Clovers and throw light on their possible Monroe County, Illinois origins.  However, this is a major find and thanks to Ray for sharing with us.  Page references are to the pages in the court records: Note that some of these are apparently the same as the references in the Genealogical Source Book above.  However, those records were only from 1845 to 1858. This covers additional years.
