     Thomas Rafferty was born circa 1849 in Connecticut.1 He was the son of John Rafferty and Ann Ross.1
          In 1853, Thomas moved with his parents to Ironton, Lawrence County, Ohio.1 Thomas, age 11, was enumerated in the household of his parents on the 1860 Federal Census in Ironton.1 Follow the link to see the census image. Thomas served in the military during the Civil War as a private. His unit was D Company, 9th Infantry, West Virginia.2 Thomas married Anna (?).3
          Thomas, age 23, and Anna, age 21, were enumerated on the 1870 Federal Census in Portsmouth, Scioto County, Ohio. Also enumerated in this household were Thomas' mother, Mrs. Ann (Ross) Rafferty, and his siblings, Mary (age 13), Ellen (age 11), Elizabeth (age 9), and Annie (age 20). There are also several "boarders" that have not been entered into this database: Michael Grady (age 35), John Carmeron (age 33), William OCallem (age 33), Mike Toole (age 40), and John Fliern (age 9).4 Thomas worked as a "boiler."4 Follow the link to see the census image.
          Thomas, age 39, and Anna, age 30, were enumerated on the 1880 Federal Census in Ironton. Also enumerated in this household were Mrs. Ann (Ross) Rafferty (Thomas' mother, age 52) and John Flyan (a boarder, age 49). Thomas is not able to read or write.3 Thomas worked as a saloon keeper.3 Follow the link to see the census image.
          Thomas died on 4 January 1891 in Lawrence County, Ohio.2 He was 42 old. He was buried at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Lawrence County, Ohio.2
