Cornelius De Jong was born on 22 February 1838 in Warmenhuizen, Noord Holland, Netherlands.2 He was the son of Pieter De Jong and Trijnte Dalenberg.1 Cornelius is believed to have immigrated to the United States with his parents sometime between his birth and 1849. Cornelius, age 12, was enumerated in the household of his parents on the 1850 Federal Census in Worth Township, Cook County, Illinois.3 Follow the link to see the census image.
Cornelius married Aafje Madderom on 14 November 1859 in Roseland, Cook County, Illinois.1 Cornelius and Aafje had at least 4 children. These children are Peter, Nicholas, Jan and Katherine.1
Cornelius, age 21, and Eva, age 18, were enumerated on the 1860 Federal Census for the Blue Island Post Office in Worth Township, Cook County, Illinois. Their farm was valued at $600 and his personal property was valued at $200. Cornelius, age 42, and Aafje, age 38, were enumerated on the 1880 Federal Census in Calumet, Cook County, Illinois. Also enumerated in this household were two sons, Peter (age 1) and N[icholas] (age 6 months).4 Cornelius worked as a farmer. Follow the link to see the census image.
