Notes for Samuel Clinton: From Elaine Clinton Bonneau: "Samuel and Mercy Clinton came to Vienna Township in 1802, from Wolcott, New Haven, Connecticut, with their family. Samuel Clinton was a farmer and the first Justice of the Peace of Vienna Township. He was among the first members of the Presbyterian Church in the Township. After he came in 1802, he purchased a farm south of Vienna Center on the west side of road in Lot #24. He built a house as well as other buildings made of logs. Among the log structures that he built was one intended for hogs. At that time, there was no school building for the children in Vienna, so Samuel Clinton loaned this building to the parents of the children for the purpose of a school. It was Vienna's first school in the fall of 1805, after it was readily cleaned. It served that purpose until the spring of 1806."
