To see a list of NY counties for which newspapers have been microfilmed, click on:

NYS Newspaper Microfilm at the State Library

Choose the NY county that is of interest to you.  All of the newspapers that have been microfilmed and are in the possession of the NYS Library are listed.  The dates that are available are shown.  For small newspapers there may not be very many issues that survived.

If you don't know the county, go to the list of cities and villages which had a newspaper which has been microfilmed.  Each of them is linked to the proper county list of newspapers.  [An obituary might be listed in both the local small newspaper and a nearby larger newspaper.]

The microfilms can be borrowed on Interlibrary Loan (your library may be interested in this information).  For NY residents, it is a free service.  For the rest of the US, there is a $10 fee for 5 consecutive newspaper microfilms (includes shipping).  They can only be borrowed by a library.

When ordering, you must determine the Call Number of the newspaper that interests you.  That will be on the County list of NYSL newspapers.  To order the five consecutive microfilm reels, you must give a beginning date for the five reels.  Using the online information, there is often no way of telling how many issues are on a microfilm, or which dates are on which reels.  Good luck.

If you have questions, you may want to phone the Genealogy Section at the NYS Library (518-474-5161).
