This Indenture
made the twenty fifth Day of April One thousand Seven hundred and Seventy
one Between William Butler of the Parish of Raleigh in the County of Amelia
of the one part and Philip Major of the said parish and County of the other
part Witnesseth that the Said William Butler for and in Consideration of
the sum of Fifteen Pounds Seventeen shillings & Six pence Current Money
to him in hand paid by the said Philip Major at and before the Ensealing
& Delivery of these presents the Receipt whereof he doth hereby acknowledge
hath Granted Bargain'd sold Releas'd & Confirm'd unto the said Philp
Major One Tract or Parcel of land Situate in the aforesaid County of Amelia
Containing Thirty one acres be the same more or less being part of the Tract
the said William Butler now lives on and is Bounded by the Lands of James
Porter William Ford & the said Philip Major with all & Singular
the appertenances thereunto belonging unto the said Philip Major & his
Heirs and assigns forever and the said William Butler for himself his Heirs
& c. Doth Covenant & agree to and with the said Philip Major that
it shall & may be Lawful to & for the said Philip Major his Heirs
and assigns from time to time & at all times forever hereafter Peaceable
and quietly to have hold occupy possess & Enjoy the said Land &
premises of the Right & Title of the said William Butler his Heirs Executors
Administrators or assigns or any other person or persons Lawfully Claiming
or to Claim by from or under them or any of them and the said William Butler
for himself & his Heirs the said Land and premises before Intended Mentiond
& Express'd unto the said Philip Major & his Heirs and all Claiming
or to Claim by from or under them or any of them or any other person or
persons whatsoever shall & will warrant & for ever defend by these
presents In Witness whereof the said William Butler hath hereunto set his
hand & fixed his Seal the day and year above written.
At a Court held for Amelia County the 25th day of April 1771 This Indenture was acknowledged by the within Named William Butler party therto and Ordered to be Recorded Rhoda Butler Wife of the said William personally appeared in Court & having been first privily Examined as the Law directs Voluntarily Relinquished her Right of Dower in the Land and premises Conveyed by the said Indenture
