Stories to Tell

The following is a portion of a letter written by Thomas McCarthy on May 8, 1915 to his children who were left at home in La Mesa, California when he and his son Leo made an automobile trip to Randsburg, Kern County, California.  This particular passage from the letter describes his experience that day at Calvary Cemetery.

White's Camp
May 8th, 1915

Dear Sarah, Marie, Tata, Bill and My Honey Baby:

. . .  Then off again for S.D.  We were not long going to the cemetery at Mission Hills, and it was then, you may be sure I hated to leave. We put the flowers that we took from home on Mama's grave.  I saw and spoke to Mr. O'Malley, told him that perhaps I would not see him again for a few weeks, and I thanked him for his kindness to me and the nice care he had given Mama's grave.  He was very nice and said that he would always look after the grave as best he could, even if I never came back.  But I hope I shall be back soon and rich when I get back. After bidding him and his brother-in-law goodbye, we once more kneeled at poor mama's grave and said goodbye as best we could.

Then with our hearts full of sorrow, we again resumed our journey to north. We went over the hills and down to Old Town.  I think that all of you have gone over the road we took.  It was threatening rain and we feared we would have to turn back.  But we did not, as we hoped for good weather, so we sure had the sunshine with us as we left Old Town behind.    . . .
