Imagine being born in the middle of the worst conflict ever on American soil. Henry Smith Cronister was born March 22, 1865 in Darkesville, Berkley County, WV towards the end of the Civil War. West Virginia, a new state due to its succession from Virginia in 1863 because of its strong Union loyalties, is the center of many fierce battles during the Civil War. Henry Smith Cronister was the 5th of six children born to Cornelius and Sarah M. Cronister. The family lived in Berkley County, WV moving Gerardstown to Mill Creek to Darkseville until 1873. At that time, Cornelius, a farmer, packed up his family and they traveled straight west coming to the end of their journey in a small town named Athens, IL. Henry married his first wife, Emma Shepherd, on August 23, 1887. Emma gave birth to Henry’s first son, Roy Smith Cronister, in 1888. Emma died April 9, 1892. Approximately, five lines of text below Emma’s birth and death dates are unreadable. Henry married his second wife, Mary “Mamie” Hopwood, on September 29, 1897 in Springfield, Sangamon County, Illinois. The ceremony was performed by Euclid B. Rogers, Minister of the Gospel, and witnessed by S. L. (Sarah L.) Cronister and D. B. (David Bell) Hornback, his sister and future sister-in-law. In 1898, Mamie gave birth to Harry Cronister. The 1900 Salisbury, Menard County, Illinois Federal Census shows Mamie, Harry and Roy living in Henry’s household along with one step-son. Mamie and Henry were later divorced . On June 17, 1906 , Henry married Margaret (“Maggie”) Elizabeth Robinson in Springfield, Sangamon County, Illinois. Maggie gave birth to 7 children in 9 years while living in the Salisbury/Athens area. Henry and Maggie separated in May of 1929 following an incident on April 1st where Henry “drove her [Maggie] out of the house at night, and as a result of exposure, she was confined in the hospital, and on the first day of May he [Henry] cruelly mistreated her, and shut off all credit for her.” In the Decree for Divorce, the Complainant, Maggie, claims that on a number of occasions Henry has “shoved, pushed and bruised complinant and drive her from home” . However, it is duly noted “that the Defendant Henry Cronister have the Custody, charge and control of the three minor children, viz: Henry aged sixteen years, Ray aged Fourteen years, John aged twelve years, with the privilege given to the Complainant Maggie Cronister, of Visiting said children at all reasonable times.” Henry married Ella Sutton and left her a widow on March 16, 1932 while living in Springfield. Henry is buried in West Cemetery in Athens, IL next to his 1st wife, Emma Shepherd. According to his daughter, Nellie Cronister Sims, he was a good man and a wonderful father.

The date of her birth is uncertain at this time due to a discrepancy between various documents including census, marriage and death records; however, on most documents she does declare she was born in Petersburg, Menard County, Illinois. According to her death certificate which lists her son, Raymond Cronister, as the informant, her birth date was February 23, 1868 in Springfield, IL; however, the Robinson family was found living in Quincy, Adams County, Illinois during the 1880 census and lists Maggie’s age as 2 . At this time, the Robinson family has not been found in the 1870 census. Maggie married S.C. Everhart on Feb. 13, 1897 in Sangamon County, Illinois. Maggie gave birth to Abel O. Everhart on May 31, 1902. Maggie married Henry Smith Cronister on June 17, 1906 in Springfield, Sangamon County, IL. The ceremony was performed by Rufus A. Finnell, Minister of the Gospel, and witnessed by Mrs. Erma Reynolds and Mr. Fred Steil. On the 1910 Federal Census for Salisbury, Sangamon County, IL, Maggie states she has given birth to 4 children, but only 3 are living. Maggie gave birth to 7 children in 9 years while living in the Salisbury/Athens area. Following the 1920 Federal Census, their marriage was dissolved. Maggie later married John Riley and moved to Indiana (exact dates unknown at this time). Maggie died November 21, 1966 in Hammond, Lake County, Indiana. She was laid to rest in Oak Ridge Cemetery, Springfield, Sangamon County, Illinois.

According to the Menard County Register of Deaths, he was born in Fulton County, Pennsylvania, but a majority of the Cronister family actually comes from Adams County, PA. Cornelius’ parents are unproven at this point even though another Chronister family historian claims Cornelius is the son of Jacob Chronister from Adams County, PA. This is unproven at this point. Cornelius Chronister is found in the Reading, Adams County, Pennsylvania census in 1850 with his wife, Sarah, mother, Mary Ann, and sister and brother, Matilda and Smith. In 1860, Cornelius is living in Gerardstown, Berkeley County, Virginia with his wife, Sarah, and 3 children: James, Annie(?) and Catherine(?). According to family tradition, Cornelius’ son, Henry Smith Cronister, was born in 1865 in Bucklestown, Berkeley County, Virginia. During the Civil War, Berkeley County, still a part of Virginia, experienced conflict and much destruction, as did other areas, and families became divided. After November 1863, Berkeley County became part of the new state of West Virginia. The area where Henry Smith Cronister was born is now known as Darkesville, Berkeley County, West Virginia. The family lived in the area throughout the war and must have experienced some very difficult times. In 1870, Cornelius has moved his family to Mill Creek, Berkeley County, West Virginia. Cornelius and family moved to Athens, Menard County, Illinois around 1873. Cornelius died after three months of sickness on October 2, 1882 in Menard County, Illinois. He is buried in West Cemetery, Athens, Illinois with his daughter, Sarah.
