Notes:
  • Joseph and Jane are buried in the Brown Family Cemetery cem in Belspring, VA (however it's interesting to note that the grave markers are both Jane and Joseph are spelled "Stralley".)

  • In Brown Family Cemetery cem, there are graves for Michael (b. May 6, 1770 in Lexington, VA, d. May 18, 1860 in Belspring, VA) and Catherine (b. Feb 13, 1781 in Blacksburg VA, d. Feb 2, 1859 in Belspring, VA) Brown. They were married Jun 13, 1803 in Dayton, OH. Their children were: Samuel, John, Robert C., James, Abraham A., Margaret, William H., Jane and Agnes.

  • Joseph was listed as an East River merchant in the 1852 "Virginia Directory Business Register".

  • A condition, originating from Jane's side of the family, was passed down to some of the Straley's. It is called symphalangism, where the second finger joints cannot be bent. It is also called "stiff-fingers".

  • Joseph & wife Jane are shown on both the 1860 & 1870 Census in Giles County VA living at St. Affordsville Township (assumed to be near Eggleston VA).  From 1850 Giles County US Census:
Joseph Straly, age 45, $3500 land owned
    Jane Straly, age 43
    William Straly, age 16
    David C Straly, age 13
    Sarah Straly, age 80
Note that Straley is spelled "Straly".  And who is Sarah, age 80? A mother-in law?
