  • From the very nice Popenoe/Poppino Family website web, on Maggie and John Henry STRALEY:
"Maggie grew up in Fannin and Coleman Counties near Robinsons Peak where the family owned a combination farm and ranch. In 1887 Maggie married Charles Straley from Lampasas County, brother of John Henry Straley who had married her sister Addie several years earlier. Charles was killed 28 May 1893 while herding cattle in Taylor County (adjoining Coleman). His horse ran into a drift fence and he died from the resulting injuries. Charles and Maggie had four children, though one, a son born in 1890, died when only 6 days old. So Maggie was left a widow with three children, all under five.

Her sister, Addie, had died only 18 days previously, leaving John Henry Straley with five small children. It must have seemed a practical move to combine their families. Maggie married John the next year. Some time before 1900, Maggie's mother, Susan Watts Popnoe came to live with them, leaving her father living with her brother James William Popnoe in Stonewall County.

Sometime after 1900, the family moved to Oplin in Callahan County, just north of Coleman. Maggie and John had three children together between 1897 and 1908. The Straley children were among the first children to attend school in the Oplin, Texas area.

After John Straley died of heart failure in 1928, Maggie continued to live in the Straley home in Oplin for many years. Some of her children had settled in the area. In 1950 she found she had cancer and she began to spend her winters and then to live permanently with her youngest child, Myrtle Thelma Straley Davis in Lampasas County. She died in 1959 at the age of 91 at Davis Ranch. She is buried next to her husband John in the Oplin Cemetery cem."
