Notes:
  • C. T. and his father, Charley Straley, operated "Straley and Straley" ranch for many years. When Charley passed away, John became the second "Straley".  They raised premium beef cattle, market cattle and wheat.  They also bailed hay for feed.  Winters were spent feeding, deer hunting and working with show calves and hogs. I worked for C.T. for many years during summers and school breaks. His son, John Dean, and I worked their farm and ranch from 1975 until 1984.  John was like a brother to me.

  • The list of Livestock Show wins for John and Kim through the years in Callahan County is impressive.  As youngsters, John and Kim exhibited mostly sheep and hogs. In high school, their specialty became beef cattle.  They regularly attend shock shows in Abilene, Dallas, Fort Worth, Houston and San Antonio.  When I was big enough to show animals, John and I returned to hogs.  It was through John's great support that I was able to win Grand Champion at the Callahan County stock show in 1980.

  • C. T. and Peg were the most loyal partners in life, truly loving one another. Their warm home was always open to anyone stopping by. I have so many memories of sitting around their dining bar and talking up many topics. And Peg was a ranch cook. She could feed 2 or 200.

  • Peggy passed away on what would have been her 51st wedding anniversary.  They are both buried at Tecumseh Cemetery, CCTX.

  • Peggy's father, John Harold SANSOM (b. Feb 21, 1911, McColloch Co, TX; d. Sep 29, 1962, Abilene, TX, called "Johnny". Click here to see his obituary.) married Jewel BUSH on Feb 21, 1929 in Brady, TX.  They lived around Brady (Mercury community) in McCulloch Co, TX.  Peggy had one sister, Sabra Bush (called "Sabe"), who never married and worked the ranch with her mother after John's death in 1962.  Sabe and Jewel where two kind, tough, hard-working Texas gals who always would chat your ear off.
