  • There is evidence that Ira Durham was the first Durham to move to Illinois. This from a genforum post by Milly Halterman on May 27, 2002: 
    "I think Ira Durham, born 1804, SCNC, led the way into Illinois because they came to a property that belonged to his wife's family. His wife was Maria Carter and they came to the "Hugh Carter place" in Gallatin County, IL. His elder brother was Asahel, my ancestor, who was born in NC in 1797."

Notes:

  • There have been several James Lindsey Durham's within our family tree.  Current available data points to James born 1758 in Brunswick, VA, and later dying in Illinois, as the son of George G. Durham. However, more concrete data is needed.

  • It is believed that James Lindsey Durham moved to Surry County, NC in 1777 along with his uncle James LINDSEY and aunt Mary (CARLTON) LINDSEY (as noted on the Descendants of Blake Carlton webpage web.)

  • James L. Durham moved to Tennessee in Feb 1812.

  • There may also be a child to James L. Durham named Jane Durham who married James MILLICAN.  This information from Gordon Ralls on rootsweb.
