The first Hazan / Chazan known was the Kabbalist and poet Abraham Hazan of Gerona, Spain (13th century). His hymn Ahot ketanah depicts the suffering of the exiled Jewish people and is sung on the first night of Rosh Hashanah by Moroccan Jews. Indeed when you read the first letters of the poem going down you'll find the name Abraham Hazan.
His piyyutim can be found in the Sepharad, Italian and even Karait rite.
His French cousin, Rabbi Yosef ben Yehuda Hazan, a Talmudist, was the author of Sefer Yedidot and Mozne tsedek.

The Hazan family left Sicily in 1562, led by their head, Rabbi Abraham of the House of Hazan (his grandfather, bearing the same name, died in 1535). The same year, his son Rabbi Shlomo Hazan stated that his family would not pay taxes in Saloniki. Shlomo, "who stood guard that no trouble come upon the community from the people who ruled the land" died in 1571 and was eulogized by Longo and Rabbi Moshe Almoshnino.

Some Hazan went to Saloniki, others to Prague, Czechoslovakia.

Some important members of the family were Hayyim Yosef Hazan, representative of the Rabbinate of Jerusalem in Europe (died in 1712); his son David Hayyim Hazan, representative of the Rabbinate of Jerusalem in Europe and owner of a printing press in Izmir; Yosef Eliyahu Hazan (17th century), rabbinical scholar; Moshe Avraham Hazan (15th century), poet and son of Abraham Hazan of Gerona; Rabbi Eliyahu Bechor Hazan (1840-1908), Chief Rabbi of Alexandria; Rabbi Israel Moshe Hazan (1808-1863), Chief Rabbi of Rome.
