Cecil Woodrow Southerland of Ida died December 16,
2003, at Beverly HealthCare in Heber Springs. Born
in Ida on May 12, 1913, he was 90. He was the son
of the late James Alfred and Cora Ellen (Reed)
Southerland. He was a farmer most of his life
and he loved to hunt and fish. He was a disabled
veteran, having served in the Unites States Army,
and he was a life member of the Disabled American
Veterans. He was nondenominational. He was preceded
in death by his parents; two daughters, Geraldine
Rothwell and Cathaleen Liles; two brothers, Dewitt
Southerland and Bud Southerland and three sisters,
Edith Foust, Blanch Dill and Lillian Southerland.
He is survived by: his wife of 62 years, Helen
(Altom) Southerland of Ida; two sons, Dale Southerland
and James Southerland, both of Ida; two daughters,
Maxine Byrd and Emogene Barnes, both of Ida; one sister,
Opal Gefon of Heber Springs; 15 grandchildren and 11 great-
grandchildren. He is also survived by other relatives and
his many friends. Funeral services were held December 18
in the Olmstead Chapel with Pastor Odell Altom officiating.
Interment with military honors by the V.F.W. Honor Guard
followed in the Miller Cemetery. Pallbearers were his
grandsons, Terry Byrd, Gary Byrd, Marc Rothwell, Russell
Barnes, Brian Hannah, Barry Hannah and Daniel Southerland.
