Arthur Glen McCormick, age 70, of Glen Carbon,
born on May 31, 1939, in Pinckneyville, died
peacefully on Sunday, Aug. 2, 2009, after a
battle with cancer. Surviving are his wife,
Beverly Smith-McCormick, whom he married on
Aug. 26, 1961; daughters: Connie Lynn Clendenin
and husband Troy of Rockwood, and their children:
Jordan, Joel and Rachel; and Debra Ann Drake and
husband Chris of Edwardsville, and their children:
Isabelle and William; a brother: Darius McCormick
and niece Sue Rae McCormick, both of Pinckneyville.
Art began his career in education as a teacher and
coach in 1961 at Pinckneyville Junior High; continued
as a principal at Wheatley Elementary in DuQuoin in
1968; following with school Superintendencies at
Luka CCSD, Oblong CUSD, Porta CUSD in Petersburg,
and Mount Olive CUSD. He retired from education
in 1996, completing 35 years of service. Art was
ordained as a deacon at Pinckneyville First Baptist
Church and subsequently served as a deacon at First
Baptist Churches of DuQuoin, Salem, Oblong, Petersburg,
O'Fallon and Chatham Baptist Church. He was a member of
the Sons of the American Revolution. In lieu of flowers,
the family suggests memorials be made to Siteman Cancer
Center, in St. Louis, Mo., or the Christian Activity
Center in East St. Louis. Visitation will be at 5 p.m.
to 8 p.m., on Wednesday, Aug. 5, at Irwin Chapel, 591
Glen Crossing Road, in Glen Carbon. Visitation will
continue along with funeral service at Pinckneyville
First Baptist Church at 10 a.m. to 11:45 a.m., on
Thursday, Aug. 6, with Dr. Don Mayberry officiating.
Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Cemetery in DuQuoin.
Irwin Chapel in Glen Carbon is in charge of arrangements.
