Mrs. Cassie Odell Taylor-Chambers, a resident of Somerville
and native Fayette Countian, died at 6 a.m. Sunday, March 14,
2004, at the National Healthcare Center in Somerville where
she has been a resident for the past nineteen months. She was
92 years of age and died following an extended illness of
several years. Funeral services were conducted at 4 p.m. Tuesday,
March 16th at the Peebles Funeral Chapel in Somerville with Dr. Leo
Powers, Minister of the Somerville Church of Christ, officiating.
He was assisted by Ministers Phil Baucom and Robert Brown. Interment
was in the Somerville City Cemetery. Peebles Fayette County Funeral
Home was in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Chambers was born December
7, 1912 in the Macon Community of Fayette County, the daughter of
the late James L. Taylor and the late Cora Sain Taylor. She was
educated in the Fayette County Public School system and was married
in 1932 to Alfred Maurice Chambers, former contractor and carpenter,
who preceded her in death on October 4, 1981. Mrs. Chambers was a
homemaker and salesperson throughout her life. She was employed for
a number of years in the portrait studio of Goldsmith's Department
Stores in Memphis before her retirement. She had been a resident of
Fayette and Shelby Counties for most of her life and was a longtime
member of the Church of Christ with memberships at the Macon Road
Church of Christ in Memphis and in recent years at the Somerville
Church of Christ. Her interests included traveling, sewing and
flower gardening as long as health permitted. She will be remembered
as a person with Christian principles with a lifelong concern and
support to her family. Mrs. Chambers is survived by two daughters,
Janie Joyce Anderson and Charlotte Baucom, both of Memphis; two
sons, Calvin Chambers of Memphis, Shirley Chambers of Moscow; two
sisters, Opal Tapp and Janie Dilliard, both of Somerville; nine
grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren and two great-
greatgrandchildren. Casketbearers were Jarod Anderson, Nicholas
Baucom, James Chambers, Calvin Chambers, Jr., Ryan Hampton and
Kevin Waller. The family request that memorials be made to the
Scholarship Fund of the Church of Christ.
