War Dept Letter dated Nov 16, 1914
Hon. James YOUNG,
Representative in Congress,
Kaufman, Texas
Dear Sir:
Referring to your letter of the 10th inst., addressed to General George ANDREWS, formerly the Adjutant General, in which you request the military record of Quintus L. GORDON as a member of Company F, 5th Kentucky Regiment, Civil War. I have the honor to inform you as follows:
The name Quintus L. GORDON has not been found on the rolls on file in this office of Company F, or of any other company of either the 5th Kentucky Infantry or the 5th Kentucky Cavalry, in the service of the United States in the Civil War.
The records show, however, that one Q.L. GORDON served as a corporal of Company G, 9th Kentucky Mounted Infantry, Confederate States Army, which was organized as the 5th Kentucky Infantry, Confederate States Army. On the company muster roll covering the period from October 17, to December 31, 1861, the only roll on which his name is borne, he is reported present. No further record of him has been found.
Very truy yours,
H.P. McCAIN
The Adjutant General
Affidavit of Witnesses
The State of Texas County of Kaufman
Before me, James A. COOLEY, County Judge of Kaufman County, State of Texas, on this day personally appeared Mrs. M.J. GORDON, who is personally known to me to be crebible citizen, who, being by me sworn, on oath state that she is personally acquainted with the foregoing applicant, and that the facts set forth and statements made in her application are correct and true to the best of her knowledge and belief, and that she has no interest in this claim. And further makes oath to the following facts touching the service of the applicant's husband in the Confederate Army; (State fully your source of knowledge:) I knew Quintus L. GORDON before and at the time he enlisted and know that he did enlist and go away with the Confederate Regiment organized in Kentucky and a company commanded by Captain KING. I do not remember how long he was away with the army but remember that he returned about the close of the war at about the same time the others that enlisted in the same command returned. And it was generally accepted and talked that he had served all this time in the Confederate Army. And I have never heard it disputed or doubted that he did serve.
