Alexander George Washington Gordon Biography
1789 - 1866

A.G.W. Gordon was born 1789 South Carolina to Alexander Gordon and Sarah Lee. His mother's parents are John Lee & Mary Cassels & his fathers parents are unknown.
His father was a soldier in the 1st South Carolina line during the Revolutionary War & applied for his pension after moving to Robertson Co TN.
About the year 1800, he migrated with his family to Robertson County TN when he was 11 years old. His two older brothers, John & Green Berry, migrated to the Mississippi territory in the area of present day Clarke & Wayne counties. It's believed that A.G.W. Gordon either migrated to Mississippi with his brothers or joined them in later years but returned to Tennessee about the time of his father's death. In 1830 his father wrote a will leaving A.G.W. furniture and land to divide between himself and his sister, Sarah Gordon-King.
During his life in Robertson County TN, he bought & sold land, part of the land he owned bordered on Logan County KY. He was active in his community, paying taxes, serving on juries, participating in road repair & maintenance. The 1860 census shows the value of his real estate was $5000 and personal property valued at $716.

He married Sarah Elvina McPherson in 1830. Her parents are unknown but it is believed that they were residing in Logan County KY at the time of her marriage.
Their children are:
1. William W. born 1832 Robertson County TN and married Mary Ann Chapman & their children are Nancy Ann, William A., Mary E., Amanda P. and Willie A. He died about 1863 in Illinois.
2. Quintus Livingston born Oct 11, 1837 Robertson County TN and married Malona Parallie Lawrence Feb 16, 1864 Saline Co IL. They did not have any children.
3. James Bolton born Jun 7, 1840 Robertson County TN and married Malinda Jane Abney and their children are Anna Parallie, John B., Elvina Letha, Charles Monroe, William Henry, Levi, Thomas Wesley, James Steven, Elizabeth Jane, Albert, Delia Lawrence & Minnie Emoline.
4. Albert G. born 1843 Robertson County TN and married Virginia Belle Custer & their children are John A., Robert W., Eula Mae, Bessie, Albert Preston, Fannie and Richard.
5. George E. born 1847 Robertson Co TN, died about 1861/62, probably during the journey to Illinois.

A.G.W.'s two sons, Quintus & James, enlisted Oct 17, 1861 in the 9th KY Mounted Infantry, Co G, C.S.A. under the command of George A. King, their cousin. The last entry in the military record of Quintus dated May 6, 1862 states that he was reported as a deserter & dropped from the rolls. The last entry in the military record of James dated Dec 7, 1862 states that he was on the list of killed, wounded & missing after the Battle of Hartsville TN, supposed to be killed.
About 1861 A.G.W. moved his family to Saline County IL. He had lived in Robertson County TN from the time he was 11 till age 73 when he suddenly moved his whole family out of TN. The reason for this move is unknown but may have been related to the civil war. It is believed that his son, George E., died during the journey to Illinois.
Quintus married on Feb 16, 1862 in Saline Co IL so he was already living there before his father left Tennessee. James married Sep 14, 1865 in Saline Co IL and its unknown when he first entered Illinois. William's death date is estimated to be 1863. The last child of William W. Gordon was born Jun 1863 in Saline Co IL. Before 1870 Albert escorted his sister-in-law & her children to Graves County KY where her relatives resided & she later married James W. Chapman. The 1870 census shows Albert is living with them. He later moved to Texas where he married Virginia Belle Custer about 1872.
A.G.W. Gordon died Dec 3, 1865 in Saline Co IL & buried at Old Brushy Cemetery which is located next to Brushy Fork Primitive Baptist Church. Elvina Letha Gordon, his grand-daughter, is buried next to him. Around 1875 Sarah Gordon & her family moved to Kaufman County TX. The 1880 census shows Sarah living with her son, Albert & his family, in Ellis Co TX. Sarah Gordon died Jun 15, 1881 in Texas & was buried at College Mound Cemetery in Kaufman Co TX.
