Robert S. Wilson was the son of Robert Wilson who came to Pope County in 1834. Wilson township was named for this family. Robert S. married Elvira Gordon and his brother Samuel married Elzanna Gordon, sister of Elvira. Robert S. and Elvira were the parents of Joe and Mary Angeline. Mary A, born May 22, 1848 married William James Ashmore "Bill" July 24, 1867. They were the parents of five sons and three daughters. Joe Wilson and his wife Adeline, whose surname is not known, were the parents of seven daughters. They were: Rena, husband unknown; Katie, who married Richard Golden; Ella, who married Dave Minor; May who married Decater Hillis; Millie, who married Sherman Ashmore; Joanna, who married Bill Shaw; and Ruthie, who married Hobart Bartlett. Sherman Ashmore was the son of Stephen Robert Ashmore who was the only brother of "Bill" Ashmore.
Joe's 2nd wife was Mattie Shaw, sister of Bill Shaw, and from this marriage Joe was the father of two more daughters: Willie and Ora. Joe taught singing schools and all of his daughters were accomplished organists.
Samuel and Elzanna Wilson's children were Finis and Gully. Samuel and Elzanna, Robert S. and Elvira all died before the Civil War, and both sets of children were raised by Missouri Gordon-Austin, who was the sister of Elvira and Elzanna. Missouri was the 1st wife of P.M. Austin. Robert S. Wilson's sisters and other brothers were: James L., who married Sarah Ann Cheyne; Margaret Elizabeth, who married Ira Griffin; Edmund Dixon, who married Mahala Burhead; and Witheral Anderson, whose wife's name is unknown to family historians.
Griffin Flat neighbors and kin to the Pioneer Wilson family were the Griffins, the Burnetts, the Burrises, the Lemleys and the McCarleys. Robert S. Wilson's mother was Jane Latimore, born County Tyrone, Ireland. Robert S. and Elvira were the great grandparents of Willie Lea Wilkins and the great great grandparents of Alyce F. Hicks.
