Velma Virginia Gordon-Cates

Daughter of John Bruce Gordon & Carrie Etta Tucker

I visited Velma when I went to Arkansas on that long trip I took after Mom died. Velma was taking care of her invalid mother. She knew nothing but did try to talk to me. Velma said, "Well Edith, I think she knows you. She's never tried so hard to talk in a long time." Noreen & Myrl came over to Velma's while I was there to see me and we had dinner together before their mother died. Not long after I got back home Velma wrote me that her mother died. She thought she was prepared for it but it nearly killed her. Not long after that she had a checkup and found out she had stomach cancer. She never wrote much after that. Velma had a sad life in a way. She married and not long after her husband was called into the army and went to Europe and was killed in the war so she never had any children or remarried. She stayed with her mom and dad and helped on the farm and she promised her dad she'd take care of her mother and she did until her mother died.
