Joseph Lowell Gordon
Joseph Lowell, son of Benjamin Lowell Gordon & Lulu Pearl Evans, was born Feb 18, 1915 Los Angeles CA, died Apr 14, 1978 Sacramento CA of a heart attack & was cremated. He married Dorothy Irene Crum June 1938 in Elkton Maryland. His nickname was "Flash" which was a reference to the pop action figure of the 1930's and for his quick feet around the second base bag. He attended the University of Oregon where he participated in football, gymnastics, soccer and the long jump. He also played the violin in the school orchestra. He received a degree in Physical Education. During 1944-1945 he served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
He played second baseman for the New York Yankees from 1938 to 1946 and the Cleveland Indians from 1947 to 1950. He played his first game Apr 18, 1938 at age 23 and played his last game Sep 30, 1950. He made the American League All Star squad 9 times and was voted MVP in 1942. Joe played in 5 World Series with the Yankees and one in 1948 with the Indians. He was a manager with the Sacramento Solons, Cleveland Indians (1958-1960) Detroit Tigers (1960), Kansas City Athletics (1961) & the Kansas City Royals (1969).
After his baseball career, he was in the real estate business.
