James Chute, Sr.
Date of Addition: April 26, 2002

More records from James Chute Sr. and Jr. (son and grandson of Lionel) have been added to the web site from several sources: the wills which James Sr. witnessed (and in one case, wrote himself), bringing to light the extended family into which he married, with its ties to Governor Winthrop and Samuel Symonds. Also some interesting details from Rowley Records on the Thomas Wood family, into which James Chute, Jr. married: that his father-in-law was accused of misappropriating land from another and had to "confess his sin" before the Rowley congregation; and that his young sister-in-law, Elizabeth Wood, died saving her brother from certain death, when the Wood home caught on fire.

Noah Chute and the Problem with Jeremiah M. Chute
Date of Addition: April 26, 2002

It falls to us to try and make some accounting of William E. Chute's list, "Of Chutes in America, Not of the Main Family". We now have enough people of our own causing havoc with the family records ... we can lessen the list by eliminating some of the names William Edward Chute had singled out as problems.

I'll start with Noah Chute (first name on the list, page 17) and Jeremiah M. Chute, the fourth name on that list.

Noah was probably a Shute. He was probably the ancestor of the Noah's, Ebeneezer's and William Shutes who followed. For example, a Noah Shute was born 30 NOV 1821 to Ebenezer Shute and Rachel Short Johnson, in Grafton, Bridgewater Township, New Hampshire. He's easily found in census records - although not in New Jersey, and one wonders if the name of "Bridgewater" simply suggested New Jersey to someone, as there is a Bridgewater, New Jersey. He did wind up, at age 85, in Manhattan, New York. He had a son, Noah B. Shute, who also lived in Manhattan and apparently had an ice delivery business.

As for Jeremiah, all that was known about him in 1894 was that he appeared in the Salem, Massachusetts register, in a marriage to Betsy Gavet in 1806.

They appear to be multiplying, for now we find not one, but three Jeremiah M. Chute's.

A Jeremiah M. SHUTE married a Mary Gavit on 19 OCT 1806 in Salem, Essex, Massachusetts. If she were in fact a Mary Elizabeth ("Betsy"), this would be the Jeremiah CHUTE that William Edward Chute located.

The second of the three Jeremiah M. Chute's was born on 8 MAR 1815, in Newburyport, Essex, Massachusetts, but as Jeremiah SHUTE, to father John M. Shute and wife Nancy.

The third is Jeremiah McLucas CHUTE, already known to us through the "History of Casco, Maine". He was born 7 FEB 1837 to Moses and Elizabeth Brackett Chute, married Violette Parmenter and "went out west to Eden, Minnesota". However, Census Records of 1870 and 1890 record a "Jeremiah M. CHUTE" in Wisconsin, not Minnesota. The ages of the Jeremiah M. Chute in two Wisconsin Census records match the age of the Jeremiah McLucas Chute who, according to the Casco Records, went to Minnesota and then returned to Casco. This is the family of William Chute and Hannah Carter who changed their name from Shute to Chute about the time of the Revolutionary War. William Shute/Chute and Hannah Carter married in 1751 in Scarborough, Massachusetts.

Military records also seem to be referring to Jeremiah McLucas Chute, although those records place him in Lowell, Massachusetts and not Casco, Maine. By the Revolutionary War records, we know that he was born 1837-1838. We now know that he was a machinist in Lowell, Massachusetts when he enlisted as a private in Company G, 6th Infantry Regiment Massachusetts on 25 August 1862 at the age of 24. We know also that he survived the Revolutionary War and mustered out on 03 June 1863 in Lowell.

At the age of 33, in 1870, we find him in Winnebago County, Oshkosh, Wisconsin, working as a carpenter, listing Maine as his place of birth. This matches information included in the "History of Casco, Maine", which lists Jeremiah M. Chute as one of their residents who fought in the Revolutionary War.

In 1890, we find him still in Wisconsin, but recorded in the "E.D. 85 St. Evens Point" township.

It appears we have another Shute-Chute mix-up, but whether Jeremiah or a descendant, once in Wisconsin, ever reverted back to the "Shute" surname, I can't say. He is definitively recorded in most records as a "Chute" beginning with the Revolutionary War Records and beyond, and his decendants may very easily still be identified as "Chutes".

Charles Herbert Chute, Genevieve Baker Chute & Sarah Elizabeth Chute
Date of Addition: April 22, 2002

Lucille Elizabeth Glover Mullen, the daughter of Sarah Elizabeth Chute sent in a photo of her mother with parents Charles Herbert Chute and Genevieve Baker Chute. She'll also be updating her branch of the family shortly.

Another Francis Chute Mystery, 1668
... and the Whipple Family Mystery
Date of Addition: April 22, 2002

From The Hammatt Papers: Early Inhabitants of Ipswich, Massachusetts, 1633-1700, written by Abraham Hammatt, in 1890, here's something interesting: in the section on the Clarke Family, a will of one Thomas Clarke, Senior, "sometime Sargent", dated June 24, 1668, and proved May 14, 1691. He left various items and articles to his son Freeman, his wife Sarah, friends and neighbors ... and to "Mr. Francis Chute and Stephen Cross, overseers." If the will was written and dated in 1668, and Francis was already an "overseer", this would make him about the same age as Lionel's son, James ... and nothing has ever connected Lionel and Rose with any children other than James and Nathaniel, who died after arriving in the colonies. So who's THIS Chute - another Shute misspelled as a Chute, a genuine Chute, or ... was Clarke posssibly referring to an overseer of property still living back in England?

Another mystery from the same book is the brief notation on Matthew Whipple: "Was a commoner in 1641. His second wife, Rose, he married November 13, 1646. His children were John, born July 15, 1657, Matthew, born December 20, 1658, Joseph, Mary, Ann and Elizabeth. He had land with his brother John, 200 acres of land granted February 19, 1637, at the Hamlet, where he resided. He died October 20, 1658."

Here's the problem with that ... Hammatt is seemingly unaware, as he writes this, that the "Rose" he's writing about is the widow of Lionel Chute. And if Rose was anywhere near Lionel's age, she would have been in her 70's when all of these births occurred - her son James was already an adult when she remarried. Has anyone located any record of her birth year, or the date she died? It seems more likely that Whipple remarried a third time, sometime prior to the birth of son John Whipple in 1657 ... or if not, Rose was extremely young when she married Lionel, much younger than our Chute sources have suggested.

Irish Chutes: "Springhill", "Ballyheigue Castle" and "Coherciveen"?
Date of Addition: April 21, 2002

Sam Albertini, son of Sylvia Chute Albertini of Australia faxed over multiple pages from several sources their Aunt Kathleen found in a library ... they're not sure of the original source material. It appears to be a 19th century Irish peerage or gentry listing, with military rolls and other items ... I'm going to begin adding these pages to the records section within a day or so; perhaps someone will be able to give me some idea of the original source material. (In fact, these pages look very similar to the aforementioned notes on Catherine Chute and Cornelius McGillicuddy, but that original source isn't known, either!) Meanwhile, perhaps one of our Irish Chutes can tell me where "Springhill", "Ballyheigue Castle" and "Coherciveen" are located - there appear to be families of Chutes in those areas, according to this source.

William Burleigh Chute
Date of Check-In: April 21, 2002

We've heard from William Burleigh Chute, a relative of Alick Patrick Chute of Fiji ... William's father was Albert Henry Chute, brother of Alick ... and William tells us they are descendants of another William Burleigh Chute, who emigrated to Fiji from Cork, Ireland. He also tells me there are some 200 of them!! Meanwhile, the search for the original William Burleigh Chute is underway.

James Chute, Mary Epps, Samuel Symonds, Reverend Nathaniel Noyes, The Salem Witch Trials
... and a good reason to examine your furniture
Date of Addition: April 20, 2002

I've been working all week on James Chute and his relationships to the Epps, Symonds and Noyes families. One of the reasons this took a bit of work was that there are at least three Samuel Symonds on record, all milling around in the same area at the same time ... and why this should be of any interest at all to the Chutes is because all three families were closely related at the time.

First is James Chute's wife's step-father, known as (and often appearing in records as) Samuel but actually born as George Samuel Symonds, one of the founders of Ipswich, later the deputy governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, married to Martha Read Epps. Second, there is George Samuel's son Samuel Symonds, Jr., one of three of the same name born to the same father, so we're assuming this one was the last of the three, known for occasionally leaving off the "Jr." when signing official documents, and confusing genealogists even further. It was this Samuel who asked his brother-in-law James Chute to witness his last will and testament before he sailed for England. Apparently he didn't trust the fine seamen of his day to get him across the Atlantic in one piece. " …Being upon a voyage for England & not knowing how it may please God to deal with me in respect to my mortal condition …", he begins querulously, and if James Chute hadn't been a Puritan, he might have helpfully suggested Sam look up the late Will Shakespeare's theater company, looking for players with a penchant for melodrama, when he arrived in London. (See notes).

The other is the Samuel Symonds who is well known as the brother of an equally famous and celebrated - especially by Christie's, who earned the commission - carpenter, James Symonds (1633-1714), whose cabinet (the Joseph and Bathsheba Pope Valuables Cabinet, a 16-inch-tall chest made in Salem Village - now Danvers - in 1679) recently sold for a gazillion* dollars at their auction house, and set a world auction record for 17th century American furniture. This third Samuel Symonds, brother of James and son of John, is probably the one who proved John Proctor's will before the Salem authorities hung Proctor falsely for "wizardry" in 1692 during the Salem Witch trials - although, to their credit, they did say "oops" later.** The multiple Samuels are no doubt related in some fashion (George Samuel's grandfather is also named John), but I'll leave that for the Symonds Family to unravel.

In an interesting sidebar of familial familiarity, Captain Daniel Epps, Martha Read's eldest son by first husband Daniel Epps, married Elizabeth Symonds, who was George Samuel Symond's daughter by his previous marriage to Dorothy Harnakenden. They weren't at all related by blood - it just looks strange on paper, but we're hardly the family to talk, with all of our inter-family marriages.

*Actually, it was $2,400,000, but who's counting? On the chance that James Symonds was closely related to George Samuel Symonds (and thus James Chute), if any of us are still wandering around with heirloom furniture passed down from generation to generation … we might want to take a REAL good look at it. Meanwhile, you can go look at this piece at the Peabody-Essex Museum in Salem - they purchased it.

** This was not the only semi-connection of the Chute family to the Salem Witch Trials. Another one of our allied family ancestors who went down in history as being involved in them was the Reverend Nicholas Noyes, minister of Salem and brother of Hannah Noyes Cheney, mother-in-law to three Chute family members, Lionel, Ann and Mary. History has not been kind to Nicholas, generally remembered as a gullible, empty-headed, merciless villian who slaughtered the innocent with impunity. On the other hand, history wasn't the only force working against Nicholas - he's even more famous today as the victim of a curse leveled at him by one of the women falsely accused of witchcraft in 1692:

"At her hanging, the Rev. Nicholas Noyes asked accused witch Sarah Good to confess to being a witch. Her famous response to him was: "I am no more a witch than you are a wizard, and if you take away my life God will give you blood to drink." Twenty-five years later, Noyes died of a hemorrhage, choking on his own blood."

Clarence Haskell Chute, George Albert Chute, Richard Harry Chute & The LaFave Family
Date of Addition: April 14, 2002

Nancy Alberta Chute LaFave's worksheets on her father, George Albert Chute and her grandfather, Clarence Haskell Chute - as well as her own - have been uploaded to the web site. I added to her notes some additional data on the military history of the "Murmansk Run" and the Merchant Marines during World War II - in fact, if any of our World War II veterans and military experts can shed any additional light on this dangerous North Atlantic run, we'd love to hear from you. Nancy's brother Richard Harry Chute also called from Wellsville, New York with his side of the family tree ... thanks again, to both Nancy and Richard!

Catherine Chute & Cornelius McGillicuddy
Date of Addition: April 13, 2002

Moira Black contributed several pages from the "McGillicuddy Pedigree", which included a great deal of information on the immediate descendants of Catherine Chute and Cornelius McGillicuddy, who married in 1745. The original source is not included on the pages - which were all that Moira had - but they are entitled, "The McGillicuddy Pedigree from the seventeenth century to the present time, compiled by the Editor from Family Papers and Other Records." However, without knowing when the "present time" was for the "Editor" in question, I can't be certain what the original source document or book was, for these pages.

Peter Chute & Elizabeth Margaret Teesdale
Date of Addition: April 13, 2002

With apologies to them both for taking so long, I've finally uploaded the worksheets from Peter Chute and Elizabeth Richardson - Peter was born in Liverpool, Great Britain to John Chute and Margaret Stanley; although they're hoping to be in Scotland later this year, right now they're residing in Crete, Greece. Thanks again, Peter!

Hilda Kinsman Chute
Date of Addition: April 13, 2002

Molly Chute McLaughlin was kind enough to forward the obituary of Hilda Kinsman Chute, who passed away very recently, on 10 APRIL 2002, at the age of 101. Hilda was the wife of the late Austin Aubrey Chute, and was a musician, an artist and a teacher, among her many gifts. I particularly liked the comment, "Grit, loving care and a good laugh were her trademarks." -- everybody should be remembered for all of those things, but most especially for having "a good laugh"!

Thomas Chute, Australia
Date of Addition: April 13, 2002

Linda Barwick wrote in with information on a Thomas Chute, from Australia. "Thomas Chute (d. 1926) was the witness at both weddings of my great-grandfather Alfred Elvin Millard (first wedding 1883, second wedding 1900). Thomas's parents' names were Thomas and Emma, according to his death registration (he died in Petersham, Sydney). Elvin Millard arrived in Australia as a sailor, and perhaps his friend Thomas Chute did too. I hope this information may help someone."

Regards
Linda Barwick
Sydney, Australia

Her information has been added to the Australian index. Meanwhile, I've asked Linda her great-grandfather's Port of Origin, as I did find a Thomas Chute arriving with the British Navy in May 1870, into the Port of Brisbane, at the age of 28. If this is the same Thomas, this would make his year of birth as ~1842.

Daniel Chute
Date of Addition: April 13, 2002

From Families of County Kerry, Ireland came the first name of Daniel Chute's wife: "In 1619, John MacElligott, son of Thomas and nephew of Maurice, inherited the family estate in Bally MacElligott and Ballyseedy parishes; he was the son in law of Bishop Crosbie and sold Tulligarron to Daniel Chute in 1630, when the latter married his daughter, Johanna."

Lest everyone immediately raise an eyebrow at the thought of a Bishop having a son-in-law, this was Bishop John Crosbie, Protestant Bishop of Artfert.

O'Connor - Chute, Chutes Named "Pierce"
Date of Addition: April 13, 2002

Sylvia Chute Albertini from Australia checked in - of Brother John Kostka Chute's family. Their move from Ireland to Australia begins with a Pierce Chute marrying a Julia O'Connor in Ireland, with their son Richard being the actual Chute who braved the long journey to settle in Australia. Of the Chute men named "Pierce" in the records, we have only two, and at least one of them already has a request for additional information connected with him: someone was "looking for information about the descendants of MICHAEL HANRAHAN who was born about 1750 probably in Kerry. He married MARGARET KENNELLY. One of his sons MICHAEL PATRICK HANRAHAN b 1808 in Lixnaw, Co. Kerry, d 1874, married in 1829 JOHANNA BUCKLEY, b. 1811, d 1886 in Australia. Michael Patrick and Johanna H. migrated to Australia on the "Ascendant" in 1858 with their children. One of these children, Michael Francis HANRAHAN , b 1841 in Lixnaw, Co Kerry, d 1922 in Warwick, Queensland, married at Redbank Queensland in 1865 ELIZABETH ANNE TRANT, b 1842. D 1904 in Townsville Queensland. One of their daughters, Elizabeth Anne Valentine Hanrahan, b 1880, d 1973 in Warwick Queensland, married Henry STERNE in Warwick in 1909.

Elizabeth Anne TRANT, daughter of Thomas Patrick TRANT d 1849 and Mary Anne CHUTE, d 1851, of Dingle, Co Kerry. Mary Anne CHUTE, daughter of Pierce CHUTE, was reared at Chute Hall by her uncle Francis Bernard CHUTE and his wife Jane ROWAN." Based on the above, it was deduced that the researcher refers to this Pierce Chute, opposed to Pierce Thomas Chute, and that he had a daughter named Mary Anne, who married Thomas Patrick Trant mentioned above. However, her mother's name is not mentioned.

A family of Australian Chutes have recorded their descent from a Pierce Chute who wed a Julia O'Connor in Ireland. It was their son Richard who emigrated to Australia, and from whom they trace their descent. Pierce Thomas Chute is recorded as having married a Carrie Langton, although he might have remarried at some point. Further information is needed to determine which of these two Pierce Chutes married a Julia O'Connor and had a son, Richard, or if there is a third "Pierce Chute" who has not found his way into the records.

Surrenden, Stockwell and Hampshire Lines
Date of Addition: April 6, 2002

It's not ready to be converted to a GEDCOM yet - links from the index and to the notes files are still in need of some work - but I think that the basic succession line on these Chutes has been (hopefully) structured correctly. The Surrenden and Stockwell lines, in particular, have frustrated even professional pedigree genealogists in Great Britain for quite some time - many of them disagree with each other, in part because this family was seemingly determined to name every single child they had Edward, George or Elizabeth. By the time anyone got to the sixth generation of Edward, George and Elizabeth, (and even those records contradicted each other), even the steady folks at Burke's Peerage were swilling nerve tonic. The index links and the notes should be connected to the right people within a week or so.

Who Was Looking for Rolland???
Date of Addition: April 4, 2002

I know that somebody out there was searching for Rolland Patrick Chute - the English/Irish grandfather who used to be with the Queen's guard? I remember reading the request somewhere, but (now that I need it) I naturally can't find it. Whoever that was, call the Home Office - we not only found him, we found the rest of your family as well. I'll try to get the data notes (and indexing) uploaded by this evening.

Julia Hawes Cleaveland, Audrey Nina Smith
Date of Addition: April 4, 2002

Photos of Julia Hawes Cleaveland and Audrey Nina Smith have been added to the web site, with thanks to Lionel Chute. And an extra note of thanks to Lionel's fiancee Aileen, who calmly dragged the Message Center eyeballs into her PhotoShop and made them go away. We are now forever free of the headache-inducing dancing eyeballs. By the way, those who changed Charles Lionel and Nina Audrey Smith's marriage date to 1917 in their database, should now change it back to 1915.

Guestbook/Message Center
Date of Addition: April 3, 2002

I've added a Guestbook to the web site, accessible from the bottom of the opening page. I had really wanted it to be more of a message center, where visitors to the web site could leave messages seeking information, or contacting other Chutes, without needing to go through me to do so.

The only template I could find was the "guestbook" template, so I've used that ... I'm really not happy with those dancing eyeballs on the "View Guestbook" button, though, so I'll try to tweak the template into looking a bit less ... irritating. Until I do that, if anyone would like to leave another message, and test the thing to make sure it works properly - please do so, and let me know if there are any problems with it. (And I'd love any ideas on how to get those eyeballs to stop moving! Actually, if anyone out there is a software designer and has any idea what that "java script" error message is, or has ideas on how to improve it, I'd love to hear from you.)

Listowel Chutes
Date of Addition: April 3, 2002

Good news for the Irish Chutes! Janet Chute, a Listowel Chute now living (I think) in Dublin has checked in, with the news that her mother had done a considerable amount of family history research. Her mother has, unfortunately, passed on, but Janet believes that her notes and research are still in the family home in Listowel. Janet tells me she is a descendant of the Challoner Chute line, which means that Irish Chutes have at least two separate but connected lines of ancestry - the lines descended from the Chute Hall branch, and the lines descended from the Challoner/Vyne branch.

Naturally, as soon as I posted that I hadn't yet found any Chutes other than Roberto with soccer in their blood, I found a group of them - in Listowel, Ireland, and Janet reports that her grandfather's name is also Tony. Meanwhile, I'm going to assume (based on nothing more than their respective ages and heights) that John is Tony's father. I've sent Janet some Family Data worksheets, with the hope that she'll pass them out to every Chute she knows, and am eagerly awaiting more and more information for the Irish branch of the Chute family! Meanwhile, here are the photos I mentioned, and for the moment I have no more information on them, other than these photos and the hope that, given a few more, we could start our own league ...!

Baltzer-Chute
Date of Addition: April 2, 2002

The Heartland family genealogy provided further allied family information on Austin Baltzer (or Balsor) and his wife Bessie Chute.

Martland Chute - Jennie E. Bentley
Date of Addition: April 2, 2002

The Bissell family genealogy provided further allied family information on Jennie E. Bentley, a Bissell descendant, who married Martland Chute. The web site link can be found in the notes. In these records, Martland has been incorrectly listed as "Martin".

Claude Henry Chute, William Henry Chute, Roberto Edouardo Chute I, II and III, and Miscellanous Records
Date of Addition: April 1, 2002

The military records of Claude Henry Chute and William Henry Chute have been added to the records, notes in both cases courtesy once again of James O'Sullivan. In the latter case, you'll see we have something of a conflict between the Alice Maud Chute who married John Cantwell, and the Alice Maude Chute who was the mother of William Henry.

I've just added a section for Chutes from Argentina, Uruguay and South America to the main index, and just in the nick of time, too - I'd found a number of Roberto Edouardo Chute's, as well as a Jorge Chute (yes, another George!), and was in the process of trying to translate several of these records, as well as trying to separate the various records on the different "Roberto Edouardo"s - the youngest of which appeared to be based here in the United States.

Roberto Edouardo Chute responded to my e-mail, with confirmation that yes, indeed, he was the son of Roberto Edouardo and grandson of Roberto Edouardo ... now based in Chicago, working and doing graduate work at Northwestern University, Roberto often flies home to Argentina to visit family and friends and is certain that his family will assist us in updating the Argentine branch of the Chute family. I was absolutely delighted to hear from him - hopefully, we'll be able to provide a family structure for this branch on the web site quite soon - not to mention connecting them back to the main line, from whence they originated ... we have no records on them at all since Lyman Wallace and brother Robert John left for Argentina, shortly before William Edward Chute wrote the first Chute Family History.

Miscellaneous Records has also been added to the general index - these are records found in various sources that I haven't been able to match to an existing Chute. I have a lot of these records; so far I've uploaded the Australian immigration ones. My difficulty with these records is in trying to pinpoint their points of origin - these are records of ships which arrived at a British Commonwealth port, but didn't necessarily originate from one ... so until I find the Point of Origin, I'm not sure in which branch of the Chute family to place these immigrants. They might have originated anywhere - including the United States.

You'll note I also reserved a spot in the index for "Scandinavian Chutes", this after discovering, to my great surprise, at least one Chute who appears to be born and raised in the Netherlands. Before jumping to all sorts of conclusions, I'm going to assume this is a branch that immigrated there from elsewhere. More on that to follow.

All Sorts of Cool Stuff
Date of Addition: March 29, 2002

The source information on Robert de Chete or de Shete was received from David Coffin of the Coffin family, who publishes the Coffin News - the record comes from Devon Feet of Fines; Volume I, Richard I to Henry IIIl 1196-1272 by The Reverend Oswald J. Reichel, published at Exeter by The Devon and Cornwall Record Society, 1912. The record in this case was a marriage dowry, the details of which have been added to the notes. And so off to the D&C Record Society, but not before expressing our thanks to the Coffin family.

Steve and I had been writing to just about anyone we could think of, looking for that source, and one of the responses was from Mick Sheath who, in researching the "Sheath" family, was also collecting some limited early data on the Shutes and Chutes. And why was he doing that, you ask? Apparently, the Sheath family also believes we may be connected to them at some early point in history. Who knew? Mick did point out that there was a record of a "Humphrey de la Shethe", also from Devon, and his source was Testa de Neville sive Liber Feodorum, temp. Henry III (1216 - 1272) - Edward I (1272-1307). The surname of "de la Shethe" seems to be drifting slightly askew of "LeChute", but we're not about to forego checking the source anyway. Did anybody out there pay any attention at all in their highschool Latin classes? We may need you!

Back briefly to John Coleman Chute and East Lynne: who better to ask for direction on John Coleman than the "East Lynne Company", based here in New York, and named after the play(s) of the same name? Gayle Stahlhuth of the East Lynne Company forwarded the inquiry to Michelle LaRue, whose husband, the late Warren Kliewer, was the company's founder - she pointed out that there were dozens of theatrical adaptions made from the original novel. However, an acquaintance of hers, based in Australia, is very knowledgeable about 19th century Australian theater, and is therefore next on the list of people to ask - the friend, unfortunately, is "abroad" for a time, so we'll have to wait until he returns home, to see if he recognizes the name. In the meanwhile, our thanks to Gayle and Michelle for their kind assistance.

Some photographs: Lionel Chute sent in some terrific ones: three generations of Chutes in one photograph (ca. 1939): Charles Lionel Chute, Edward Lane Chute and Lionel (A. Lionel) Chute, a very early photograph of Edward Lane Chute, a photograph of Charles Lionel Chute, A. Lionel Chute and Yura Slapelis Chute.

Lionel also sent another wonderful story by Helen Chute Lightener. You recall that Helen is the author of stories about Julia Hawes Cleaveland Chute, and "Dick and Dorothy" Chute ... every family should be so lucky as to have a natural born story-teller like Helen. This one is about "Silent Andrew" - that would be Andrew Chute, his wife, Ann Perry and their children. She included lots of detailed information in her story that we hadn't known ... Edward Lane Chute, whose photograph is mentioned above, was one of Andrew and Ann's sons.

Last, but not least, Lionel also sent the obituary of Charles Lionel Chute from the September 27 edition of The New York Times.

James O'Sullivan has been doing such an astounding job of tracking down Chute family military and other records that I really think we ought to make him an Honorary Chute! One of his finds was a detailed map of the Chute Hall area of Kerry, Ireland.

He located a good deal of military information on both Eric Cecil Chute and Claude Henry Chute, and of particular interest is the information on Eric completed by his mother, which was requested by the Australian War Memorial. She would have filled out this form at some point in the 1920's. Her handwriting is a little difficult to read in spots; James worked very hard at translating the data she provided and making it legible. When you read the form, you realize this is a mother, who has already lost three of her seven children in infancy, describing the death of her two youngest sons on one form - World War I must have been a heartbreaking nightmare for this family. James also sent a photo of the cemetery in Turkey where Eric's memorial can be found.

Another New Zealander, Dianna Chute Kenneally, was found on an "Intellectual Property Database", as a Procter & Gamble employee ... where I also found Hilary Therisa Chute, of California, a descendant of the James Chute & Clarsie McGrath line, who had, with a small group of co-workers, co-authored "B7-LIKE MOLECULES AND USES THEREOF".

John Coleman Chute
Date of Addition: March 27, 2002

This was an interesting find. While researching the Australian National Archives, I found an interesting record of an Application for Copyright. In 1861, the novel East Lynne was published in England by Ellen Price (Mrs. Arthur) Woods in serialized format, after which it was published in book format to rave reviews - it was, according to one source, a "run-away best seller". Reportedly, the first dramatic version of the book was staged at the Effingham Theatre in Whitechapel in 1864, and then again at the Surrey Theater in 1866. Since then, according to Brian J. Burton, there have been at least sixteen different versions licensed for public performance. Burton, incidentally, published a musical version, of his own subtitled, "Never Call Me Mother!", in 1984. It was based on his own, non-musical, version published in 1964. (My personal favorite is the Ned Albert version, with the originally spelled title, "East Lynne: Powerful Mellow Drammer in Three Acts!".) So what does all this have to do with John Coleman Chute? I have no idea, largely because I've never even heard of John Coleman Chute - living, according to the application, in Oldham, England in 1914. My first thought was to begin nosing around in the London theater-based Macready Chute line, looking for Coleman relatives, and to this end, I've run the name past their descendant, David C.R. Manners, who provided us the most up to date information on that line that we have. Anyone else want to take a crack at this theatrically inclined John Coleman Chute? And was John Pitt Hardacre a publisher? Producer? Writer? Close personal friend? Relative? Was the patent filed in Australia with the expectation that John Coleman Chute's version would be performed there?

Brother John Kostka Chute
Date of Addition: March 27, 2002

I was delighted to receive a response to my inquiry to Brother John Kostka Chute, recently honored in Australia for his years of service as a member of the Marist Brothers community. A son in a family of ten (!), he reports that his family originated in the Chutes of Tralee, Ireland and emigrated to Australia early in the 1900's. As I'd already found record of the Chute who I believe was his elder brother Darryl (or Darrell), it may be that they're related to the Pierce Thomas Chute, mentioned below. This is one of the families we're still struggling to attach to the main line. He's generously offered to update the records on his branch of the family - more on this family to follow.

Challoner Francis Trevor Chute and Pierce Thomas Chute
Date of Addition: March 25, 2002

James O'Sullivan, an honorary member of the Royal Fusiliers Association, has graciously provided us with additional details on the military careers of both Challoner Francis Trevor Chute and Lieutenant-Colonel Pierce Thomas Chute. He has also provided us with two photos of Pierce Thomas Chute. In the notes on Challoner Francis, you'll find more details of his last battle, in which they "fought to the last man standing". Our thanks to Mr. O'Sullivan.

Chutes in Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific Islands
Date of Addition: March 24, 2002

As part of the global updating of the Chute Family Records, we are undertaking a systematic accounting of Chutes in Australia, New Zealand and the other South Pacific Islands. To make researching easier, Chutes in these areas will be listed in two directories: the main directory, in alphabetical order, and in the Australia, New Zealand and South Pacific Island Chute Family Directory, which lists only Chutes in that area. The individuals are listed in alphabetical order by first name - allied family members are listed following the Chutes in each section. Notes on these individuals are still being compiled, so if you have further interest in any of the Chutes in this list, let me know - I can probably give you more information on the sources for these records. This is only a very partial, extremely small list at this stage, and there are many more records to be added to this section.

Oddly enough, one of the very first Chutes to gain any notoriety in the region, Trevor Chute, is not on this list, as he did not remain in Australia, but returned to Great Britain after his period of military service. According to his various biographies in New Zealand and Australian sources, he and his wife - who he married in Australia - did not have any children who would have created a line of descent there. That did not, however, prevent other Chutes from naming their sons "Trevor", possibly after the original Trevor, although that isn't certain.

Arthur Hunt Chute & Lorna Payzant Pitt
Date of Check-In: March 22, 2002

Thank goodness the Payzant Family researchers checked in ... I discovered that there are two entirely different genealogies for Arthur Hunt Chute, the author of The Real Front and numerous magazine short stories. The first one is the one compiled by William Edward Chute. This Version I has Arthur Hunt Chute the son of Arthur Crawley Chute and Ellen Maud Hunt. On the other hand, Version II, which appears to have its origins in the LDS database, and appears on the cited GEDCOMs, has an additional Arthur Hunt Chute as the father of the same Arthur Hunt Chute (making the author an Arthur Hunt Chute, Jr.) I feel more comfortable with the WEC/GMC version of the line, first because of the dates involved - Arthur Crawley Chute would have fathered the first Arthur Hunt at the age of eleven, according to Version II, although because parents' names are not provided in the LDS database, I'm making the assumption that the father in both cases was Arthur Crawley Chute, and secondly because WEC/GMC may have received the information directly from the family. There have been errors in the LDS database. On the other hand ... the information from WEC and GMC haven't always been completely accurate either (see below), so there you go. Both lines are in the web site now, although our official comment on Version II is the pompous Gen-Speak: "This line is not satisfactorily supported." - or, for those less formally constrained, "Nah ... prob'ly not accurate but we'll toss it in anyway."

As for the children of Audrey Hunt Chute - either the poor woman had 10 children, or they're all known by various names and nicknames ... some appear in one line and not the other, others are probably duplicates but misspelled so badly it's difficult to know which one is correct ... this is going to require sitting down and doing some serious research on this family - for the time being, I'm leaving both lines up and when this gets figured out I'll make an announcement to that effect.

Discrepancies on Arthur Hunt Chute aside, the Payzant Family researchers did provide correct data on Lorna's mother, not Carrie Sophia Barss, but Caroline "Carrie" Sophia Barss Payzant, the biographical note on Hilton Alexander Pitt (he was the British Government Comissioner in Bermuda) and additional dates. If any descendants of Arthur Crawley Chute and Arthur Hunt Chute can clarify this discrepancy, or have additional information on the Payzant Family, I've added the names and e-mail addresses of the Payzant researchers to the "Allied Family Research" links.

Robert Everett Chute
Date of Check-In: March 22, 2002

We've heard from Leslie Chute-Surch, granddaughter of Robert Everett Chute of Bay City, Michigan, so we should be able to update that line soon - and more good news: we were able to clear one of our UFO's - Robert Chute, the Councilman from Niles, Michigan is her father, Robert Leslie Chute! Leslie has been doing genealogical research herself, and will be a big help in updating her branch of the family.

Henrick-Chute
Date of Addition: March 20, 2002

I've finally uploaded Susan Henrick Godley's family line to the web site, with apologies for having taken so long to get it up there ... Sue, as you recall, is a direct descendant of Isaac Chute and Margaret Manny, of Tralee and Cork, of the Irish branch of the Chutes - one of the lines we are still researching.

Ekins-Chute
Date of Check-In: March 17, 2002

We've heard from Becky Ekins, whose husband Rick is a Chute descendant through the following line: Rick Ekins, Jean Louise Lombardini Ekins, Edith Louise Porter Lombardini, Arabella Barker Chute Porter, Frank Sylvester Chute, Andrew H. Chute, James Chute ... which is the first time we've connected Frank Sylvester Chute to the Frank Chute who was the son of Andrew Hassan Chute. Hearing this, we promptly sent her a worksheet and hope to hear from her again soon! The web site note entries are still a little bit wobbly while I try to reconnect links on this, but bear with me for a day or two. Becky also mentioned that "I have Andrew H. Chute's obit as well as his son, Frank's. Frank throat was sliced by the local bully. There were two newspaper accounts of the murder." She also added that she hopes to visit the Clarsie McGrath-James Chute homestead in Carbon Hill this summer.

Alfred Lionel (A. Lionel), Charles Lionel and Edward Lane Chute
Date of Addition: March 17, 2002

Lionel Chute has returned Family Data worksheets on his father, A. Lionel, grandfather, Charles Lionel Chute and great-grandfather, Reverend Edward Lane Chute and all three with the appropriate notations have been uploaded to the web site. Details have been added from the diaries of Gladys Chute Mears among other sources.

Richard Chute
Date of Addition: March 13, 2002

We've heard from Anna Lucyea Foster Green, the great-granddaughter of Richard Chute and the spouse formerly known as Rose Arenberg Townsend - the middle name is actually "Aremberg", she tells us, so we are making the proper corrections to the file. Also, Rose was actually Hon. Rose de Moleyns, daughter of Thomas Townsend Aremberg de Moleyns, 3rd Lord Ventry. And "de Moleyns" was actually Mullins. "He changed the 'Mullins' to 'de Moleyns': 'by royal license, 16 February 1841, he took the name of de Moleyns in lieu of that of Mullins for himself and other descendants of his grandfather' (source: Complete Peerage, 1959)." Anna adds that apparently, it was quite popular at one time to revise surnames, so as to appear to be of Norman descent. Also interesting is proof of the connection between the Chutes of Chute Hall in Ireland and the Chutes of the Vyne. Her grandmother, Marian (not Mary Ann, although it was pronounced that way), corresponded with Elizabeth Martha Chute, and has a copy of at least one letter from Elizabeth, dated 1888, informing Marian of the death of her mother.

Marian, by the way, did not marry an "M. Thaha" - Anna isn't even sure where WEC found that name - but a Milhem or a Miltem Shakoor. "I have photographs of them both, though separately: she astride a donkey, presumably in Egypt (he was in the Egyptian army or worked for the government). I also have a portrait of him. He has a very dashing moustache! My mother's maiden name was Shakoor."

I've sent Anna some family worksheets - hopefully, we can update this branch of the family, at least on Marian's side, soon.

Eureka ..! (Maybe?)
Date of Addition: March 12, 2002

Steve Chute and I were discussing the problems with Shutes and Chutes - he'd found a Judith Chute who none of us had heard of before (Boston, around the time of Lionel and James), and I tracked her down - and discovered that her father was an Enoch Shute, discovering she wasn't a "Chute" at all. It got Steve thinking: if it's so easy to confuse a Shute for a Chute, the same ought to work in reverse, given the spelling irregularities of the time, and perhaps there are some Chutes floating around who have been confused with "Shutes".

So Steve, his curiosity aroused, went fishing for "Shutes" who might have been "Chutes", and found a little more than he anticipated. You can imagine his surprise when he unearthed ... a Robert de Shete, one generation earlier than our Alexander's.

He couldn't help but notice the marked similarity between an "Edouard LeChute" and a Robert de Shete, particularly when our own oral tradition has a "Robert" named as the grandson of "Edouard". Robert came out of Shute, Devon, Great Britain ... 15 miles north of Taunton. Not living in Taunton itself puts this Robert out of the property owned by the Bishops of Winchester (which was one of our biggest problems with Alexander), and onto former Saxon lands held by a Norman nobleman after the Battle of Hastings. This Robert does have a father's name attached to him: Lucas de Shete. That last little inch ... was Lucas's father named Edward??? ... might have clinched this, but is (naturally!) missing from this genealogy and database.

When we found the same duo (Robert and Roesia Coffin) in other databases (Family Ancestry and Ancestry.com) there was an interesting notation on the marriage date: "before 1238". The birth of Joan didn't account for the need to have the marriage date set before 1238, if she was born ~1245 ... the usual reason (although there are others) for a notation such as "before 1238" on an estimated wedding date is that an eldest child was born that year, ergo the marriage had to have taken place earlier. The odd numbering of the "before date" suggests an actual birth date of some individual is being used, not just an estimate ... most people use increments of 5 or 10, when making such estimates. And you can't help but notice that the date associated with Alexander (his death in 1268) is equally as specific - exactly 30 years later.

So, who was the eldest child whose birth required the marriage of Robert and Roesia to be set "before 1238"? That, of course, is the burning question at the moment, and if anyone out there would like to crack at this unusual development, and can find those last links that connect Robert to Alexander or (better yet) Lucas to "Edward" ... you may have solved the "Who was Edouard le Chute?" question!!

Needless to say ... if this turns out to be the next step in the Chute genealogy, Steve has just accomplished something that Chute family researchers haven't been able to do for centuries - even the parchment Lionel brought with him stopped at Alexander! We definitely oughta throw him a parade or something!

Albert Burton Chute
Date of Addition: March 10, 2002

The photo, text and signature of Albert Burton Chute, who graduated from New Rochelle High School, New Rochelle, Westchester County, New York in 1928 (New Rochelle being the home of his mother) was uploaded to the Freepages web site by Bill Cribbs.

Philip of Appledore
Date of Addition: March 9, 2002

More information has been added to the notes on Philip Chute of Appledore, in the form of a new book which was recently published: Henry VIII's Coastal Artillery Fort at Camber Castle, Rye, East Sussex: An Archaeological, Structural and Historical Investigation, written by Martin Biddle, Jonathan Hiller, Ian Scott and Anthony Streeten. I've included portions of Chapter Two, with their kind permission in the notes on Philip - next assignment is to interpret their source abbreviations! The detail is interesting, although it does raise another question about Philip's involvement in the Siege of Boulogne. Additional notes have been provided by Steve Chute. More notes will be added, but I thought you'd enjoy the pages on Philip's work at Camber Castle.

Henry J. Chute
Date of Addition: March 7, 2002

There are several Henry's whose family's last known location was Ohio - Hockingport and Cincinnati - who could have migrated to Tennessee. This Henry passed away quite recently, in Bristol.

Challoner Chute/Vyne Chutes
Date of Addition: March 7, 2002

For Chute family researchers located in Hampshire, Great Britain (or those who might be passing through), the following entry might be of interest to you: "Good progress continues to be made in cataloguing both new material and collections in the backlog. Substantial collections for which finding aids are now available include records of the Odiham solicitors, Lamb Brooks and Bullock, covering Odiham manor, the Odiham/Alton turnpike, and Farnborough workhouse as well as such clients as the Shaw-Lefevres, the Sclater-Booths and the Calthorpes; the Andover solicitors Barker Son and Isherwood whose clients included the Chute family of the Vyne and the owners of Appleshaw and Kimpton manors; and the agricultural merchants Warwick of Wickham. A progress report on this will be made to the Archives Panel later this month in conjunction with setting priorities for the office's work over the next few years, with fewer staff and other resources. Good progress is also being made in preparations for moving over to the new computerised cataloguing system.

Joseph Arthur Chute
Date of Addition: March 7, 2002

The Joseph Arthur Chute family, who is very involved in the civic activities of Lytton, British Columbia, is listed in the catalogs of the Lytton Museum and Archives, as they contributed to the museum a good deal of items pertaining not only to their family, but to the history of Lytton itself. The museum can be accessed from this link.

Joan ENSING Vs. Joane DUSSING
Date of Addition: March 4, 2002

Those who've received GEDCOMS! I'm re-working the Chutes between Philip of Appledore and Lionel, first because I missed an entire paragraph when transcribing the WEC data, but also because there is some question about even the accuracy of William's data, based upon the dates he provided. Once that data has been settled, I'll let everyone know to ask for a revised GEDCOM. Meanwhile, the links and data following Philip should not be considered accurate until finalized. Also, for those who questioned the name of Philip of Appledore's second wife, Steve Chute has done some additional research on her, and we're generally in concurrence that Joan Ensing and Joane Dussing are most likely the same person. His research has been added to her notes.

The Macready Chutes
Date of Addition: March 4, 2002

We've heard from a descendant of this family, David C.R. Manners, with some additional data on this line of the Chute family. We still need the genealogical structure of the names and data he shared with us, but were able to add Father Desmond Macready Chute, a well known artist who became a priest. Over time, I'd like to add a good many more notes on his life as an artist.

The Germany-Ireland Line
Date of Addition: March 2, 2002

When my grandfather recorded the information he'd been given on the James Chute and Clarsie McGrath line, he summarized the data in the rather shortened version, "claimed to have come from Germany". What he didn't add was the correspondence he'd received which described this family. Based on the contents, it was written by an (unnamed) daughter of Loren Chute, and was unsigned, although as he does mention the name of one daughter, Frances, I suspect it was written by her. The correspondence received is a joy to read. The author typed her family history on the reverse of two sheets of blue "inter-office communication" paper of the "Edward R. Dornoff Co." (location unknown) and I've scanned the text just as she wrote it - without any paragraphs or breaks in the text, which may look daunting at first, but stick with it. I think you'll enjoy reading her family history as much as I did - she made her entire family come alive with this contribution to the Chute Family Records.

Harold LeRoy Chute
Date of Addition: March 2, 2002

An article and photo from the May 5, 1960 edition of the Portland Press Herald has been added to the family records describing an award given to Dr. Harold L. Chute in 1960. The photo accompanying the article has been added to the Photo Index.

The Case of the Missing Inheritance
Date of Addition: March 2, 2002

In Grandfather's records was this interesting collection of correspondence from 1959. On February 20, 1959 The Heirs Research Bureau in Denver, Colorado (motto: "Unknown Heirs and Missing Persons Located") sent an inquiry to Anna Roper Chute in Seattle, looking for either an "H. Gordon" or a "Gordon H." Chute, who was set to inherit some funds. "We believe he may be a relative of you or your family." they wrote. He wasn't, so Anna forwarded the letter to her sister-in-law, Olive Chute, married to Emil Ray McPheeters. And on April 4, 1959, Olive forwarded it to my grandfather, as someone had told her that he had the family records. She added, "My sister Dora Chute Riley died of cancer this year so I have moved to Tucson as my son lives here and brother H. Edward and I are the last of the family. He is here with me. Yours very truly, etc." On April 7th, Grandfather answered the letter with the name and last known address of Harold Gordon Chute, although he didn't say whether he answered the Heirs Research Bureau, or Olive Chute McPheeters. Can anyone tell us the rest of this story? Did Harold Gordon Chute ever get his windfall?

Chute-Potter Family
Date of Addition: March 1, 2002

A genealogical database maintained by Dawn R. Banks provided a name and a few dates not provided by William Edward Chute. The revised Chute-Potter family is led by Jeremiah Vanderbilt Potter and Sophie Chute.

Michael Chute
Date of Addition: March 1, 2002

Attention Irish Chutes!! Michael Chute of Greenwood, Nova Scotia stopped by on January 27th, looking for a data worksheet. Michael mentions that he is not part of the Chute line which settled in the colonies first and then fled north when the Revolutionary War began, but is a descendant of the Irish branch of the Chutes. He was born and raised in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and is also the "keeper" of his family's historical records - we're hoping we hear back from him soon.

Bridget Chute
Date of Addition: 28 February 2002

Here's another family of Irish Chutes, who were described as "old", which settled in Quebec, Canada. Their daughter Bridget married another Irishman, Pierce Organ, who had arrived in North America in 1842, and they settled as a family in Washington County, Minnesota. Bridget's son, William E. Organ was credited with constructing most of the buildings in Everett, Washington. Not sure if the transcriber meant the family itself was old, or whether they had settled in Quebec at a much earlier time and were "old" by Quebec standards.

Rachel Mara Chute
Date of Addition: 26 February 2002

The recollections of Rachel Mara Chute have been added to the recently created historical events section, specifically opened to record our experiences in the September 11th attack. There is also a section created for the memories of other important events, accessible from the Main Page. The purpose of these pages is to give our descendants a sense of how we experienced history in our own lifetime, much as William E Chute did for our ancestors in the 19th century. Rachel also added some information about her own family - she's the daughter of Gregory Niles Chute.

Edward and Sir George Choute
Date of Addition: 24 February 2002

Cleve Taylor, looking for marriages between Chutes and Taylors on genuki.org, found two entries you might want to add to your records.

The first is a second marriage for Edward Chute of the Bethersden, Kent group, to Thomazine Criche, and the second is a little more curious:

"CHUTE, Sir George (signed Choute), of Hinxhill, county Kent, knight, and Cicely FREAKE (Freke), spinster, 18, with consent of her father Ralph FREAKE of Hannington, county Wiltshire, esq. - at Hannington aforesaid. 26 April 1661."

Our only obvious candidate would be Sir George Chute of "Goe sleep, sir George where's such another, can equall thee, or the Squire thy brother?" fame, although that Sir George would have been 51 at the time of this marriage, to his bride's age of 18. This George's son, also named George, with whom the baronetcy ended, has a will dated 1722 in the Kent archives. There is a 61 year span between the marriage date of 1661 and the will's date, 1722, which would make this second George at least 79 to 81 years of age at his death. The marriage of either Sir George to Cicely Freake is certainly possible, but we're wondering if anyone else has a record of a Sir George marrying a Cicely Freake that might clarify this.

John Chute/Judith Foster Line
Date of Addition: 23 February 2002

For those descended from the John Chute/Judith Foster line who became despondent and depressed after learning that they probably didn't descend from a French Baron, cheer up! The good news is that you may be still able to claim descent from the royalty of Europe through Judith's line, which, according to the hard-working genealogists of the Foster family, goes all the way back to, on one site found by Alan D. Chute, at least the 12th century. Then, you search the net for other genealogical sites that claim to make the connection between the royal houses of Europe and France, all the way back to Adam, and you're pretty much able to trace yourself, in a leap-frog, stair-step fashion, back to the dawn of time ... er, as long as it doesn't bother you that there isn't really any way of proving it, and that absolutely no one else (besides you) will be impressed with this pedigree.

I've put part of that ancestry on Judith Foster's links, but not in the Chute Family index, as they are more part of the Foster ancestry than the Chutes'. Or, you can follow Alan's directions to the site on Ancestry.com: do a search on "Laughlin Chute", and click on the first entry of three in the Ancestry World Tree. Clicking on "pedigree" and then "text format" (easier to read than the chart format), click backwards through Judith Foster, Jacob Foster and then Margaret Forster.

Or, you can try this link, which ought to take you to the right page.

The only hitch is that even the Foster family is divided over the ancestry of Reginald Foster, the first Foster in the Colonies so, before you start demanding that your friends and family begin bowing and scraping before your noble self, it may eventually turn out that you're actually descended from a chimney sweep in Surrey instead of Henry II of England and Louis IX of France... which, you gotta admit, would amuse your aforementioned friends and family to no end. Stay tuned.

Yura Slapelis Chute
Date of Addition: 17 February 2002

Lionel Chute, Jr. has informed us that his mother, Yura Slapelis Chute, passed away on February 13th. Her obituary can be read on the web site of the Cremation Society of New Hampshire, and her obituary is astounding. A extraordinarily gifted musician at a very young age, Yura performed and traveled all over the world. We've captured her obituary for our website as well. The CSNH website provides a memorial book, should you wish to express your thoughts to her family.

Can You Identify the People in these Photos?
Date of Addition: 17 February 2002

These photos are from the 1910 Chute-Bunfill Reunion and the 1929 Chute-Bunfill reunion - so if any Chutes or Bunfills out there recognize anyone in these photos, we'd be most appreciative! In the 1910 photo, we've been able to identify:
Back Row: Andrew Fuller Chute, Alfred Edward Chute, unknown boy, William Bunfill(?), Helen Olivia Chute Bunfill, unknown man, unknown woman, unknown woman, unknown man, James Hervey Chute, unknown woman.
Middle Row: unknown girl (behind Angelina), and unknown girl (in front of James Hervey).
Seated row (adult women only): Unknown woman, Harriet A. Chute, Margaret Bridgewater Bunfill Chute(?), Angelina L. Chute, unknown, unknown.

... in the 1929 photo, we're pretty much stumped! None of the children have been identified yet. Photos courtesy of Mary Ann Bunfill Adams.

Samuel Hewes Chute, M.D.
Date of Addition: 17 February 2002

Minnesota Land Records reflecting the sale of 21.47 acres of land to Samuel H. Chute on 8/1/1865 has been added to the Chute Family Records, GP4425-1.

Another Walter Mystery
Date of Addition: 15 February 2002

Leave it to another Walter Chute to get himself immersed in scandal and controversy, although this one was as a witness to a crime that took place at the turn of the century. The details were published online, in the memoires of detective John Wilson Murray (1904). Three members of the Chute family were interviewed as witnesses: Walter Chute and his son (Thomas) Ensley Chute, and Walter's half-brother Richard Lawrence Chute.

Lucinda Chute/Josiah Brown
Date of Addition: 10 February 2002

Andrea Brown, whose sons are direct descendants of Lucinda Chute, and Josiah Brown, is in the midst of researching the line. Although they originated in Dalhousie, Annapolis, Nova Scotia, Andrea was able to find the family in the Taunton, Massachusetts 1880 Census, and the Pawtucket, Rhode Island marriage records, and shared the information with us. Additional notes on the Brown line beyond Lucinda's grandchildren are included in the source notes for anyone also seeking that information. She'll be pleased to hear that her research propelled the Brown Family into the 7th most popular family in the Chute allied family roster!

Arthur Wellington Chute Line
Date of Addition: 9 February 2002

We received a stack of Family Data worksheets from Geraldine Marie Chute Skarphol, providing a wealth of information on the Arthur Wellington Chute line. Geraldine is the grandaughter of Edgar Eugene Chute, son of Arthur Wellington Chute. She has also provided two photos you might find interesting: a newspaper story on the early Hanska, Minnesota rural mail delivery system included a photo of Arthur posed with his horse and buggy outside of the old post office, the marriage photo of Edgar Eugene and wife Julia Ulen, and her own family photo. It appears that the worksheet on Marlow Sterling was inadvertently left out of the package, so that data will be added at a later date. She did a really beautiful job, providing a great deal of much needed information on the Arthur Wellington Chute line.

Stathern Bailey Chute
Date of Addition: 3 February 2002

An addition to the photo file is a copy of the 1950 obituary of Stathern Bailey Chute, from the Boston Herald. There is a discrepancy in the name of his son, listed in the newspaper as "Davis"; George M. Chute, Jr.'s book had him listed as "David". If anyone knows the family and can clear that up, we'd be most appreciative.

George M. Chute, Jr. File Records
Date of Addition: 3 February 2002

First, I want to thank everyone for your patience during the silence from this site since September 11th. My mother had a mild, and then more serious, stroke the very same week, requiring a month-long hospitalization in Newport and Providence, and ongoing recovery. With me in New York City and nephew James, Jr. working near the Pentagon in Washington D.C., the week of September 11th was quite an event for this small twig of the Chute family tree. Brother Jim and I have spent most of our weekends commuting from Virginia and New York since that time, and many things - actually, just about everything - fell behind during these past few months. The stack of back-logged correspondence is now about a foot high, but I'm now back to plugging away at it.

During one of our trips to Rhode Island, I was able to pick up my grandfather's files, which my father has been dutifully carrying around with him for years. I'm sorting through his files very carefully - some of the notes are quite old and fragile. A few things I found were my Grandfather's high school yearbook, which is a wealth of photos, signatures and information on the Class of 1918, Scottonian High School, Toledo, Ohio. Teachers, faculty, underclassmen (and women), advertisements from the City of Toledo, and more. I know that somewhere out there is a genealogist who is looking for one particular individual who might be in this book ... don't know who or why, but I thought I'd mention it. Another item that might be of interest to somebody is the full 103rd commencement program from the University of Michigan, dated 14 June 1947.

Other items that will be sent to the Chute Family Records: the 1907 revised edition of High School Physics, written by Henry S. Carhart, LL.D. and Horatio N. Chute, M.S., a 1957 edition of The Blue Cup and Other Stories, by B.J. Chute, a 1955 edition of the textbook, The Pharmacist in Retail Distribution, by Aaron Hamilton Chute and Esther Hall. One book that you might find as annoying as my grandfather did is The Amazing Story of the Chutes in America published in 1982. The most amazing aspect to this book is the absence of any Chutes in it at all, until you get to the final few pages, where you find lists of addresses copied from city directories. The rest of the book is a genealogical research aid, and generalized history of Europe.

Grandfather organized all of his records on 3x5 index cards, and I've inherited stacks and stacks of them. Those of you who might have corresponded with him in the 1950's and 60's can attest to his extraordinarily precise penmanship. However, in addition to being precise, it was miniscule. Somehow, he managed to combine entire families on one index card per entire family, simply by writing the information in such tiny penmanship I'm astounded that he could read his own cards when it came time to compile the book. Needless to say, his eagle-eye vision is apparently not an inherited quality in our family ... I'm on my way out the door to buy a strong magnifying glass.

Date of Addition: 3 February 2002

Molly is the youngest daughter of Charles Ellsworth Chute, and provided a wealth of data on her line of the Chute family tree. She also added some dates of birth and lineage from her grandfather Llewellen Lloyd Chute and further back through Gilbert Randall Chute and Alice Maria Bowlby ... those of us researching this line have Molly to thank for this additional information.
