The Legend of "Chevalier le Chute" and Robert the Bruce came up in a letter written by Dorothy Maude Bruce Chute, wife of Ernest Yorke Chute, to George M. Chute, Jr. The "Chevalier le Chute" legend is just that, but I've decided to keep track of references to this legend in the History Section, currently under "Scotland". As there have been several references to this mysterious "Chevalier le Chute", more references will be added at a later date. Other families revised as a result of her letter:
Ernest Yorke Chute and Dorothy Maude Bruce Chute.
Ernest Hooper, Sr. and Josephine Chute Hooper.
Howard Porter and Sadie Chute Porter.
William Burkitt Fowler Chute and Sophia Catherine Oikle or Eichel Chute.

Speaking of legends, in a letter written by Joseph Herman Chute to George M. Chute, Jr. I found a reference to the vague, unsubstantiated family story about Lionel Chute Jr. arriving not as a passenger, but as a ship's captain. I also remembering hearing the story that he hadn't arrived in Massachusetts at all, but had actually arrived in Ontario as a captain, and then made his way south to Massachusetts. I have no idea where I first heard the story. However, an interesting comment appears in the letter written by Joseph Herman Chute, mentioning his finding the reference to "Captain Lionel Chute" in a library. Unfortunately, we don't know what book that was - but it does mean that it's in print somewhere - we just have to find it. We now have three separate family stories of Lionel Chute arriving in America - I've added links to them in his Notes section.

A letter from Otis LeRoy Chute to George M. Chute, Jr. has been transcribed and uploaded, which impacted the following individuals:

Arthur Lindsay Chute and Edith Hannah Beatrice Long Chute.
Edgar B. Chute and Laura Iva Lindamood Chute.
John Frances Chute and Sophronia Adelaide Smith Chute. Researching this line had the pleasant result of breaking open the James Chute-Anna Kirwen line at least one more generation, and it appears that James Chute was the brother of John Francis' father Andrew. We're now looking for a Thomas and Rose Chute, who emigrated out of Ireland.

Curtis Carter Chute and Almeda C. Stone Chute.
Roland/Rolland Patrick ("Tony") Chute, Catherine Neville Chute and Philomena T. O'Quigley Chute
Jan Eric Chute and Ellen Thøring Chute. If the Scandinavian origins of our family are ever confirmed (beyond our strong theories), there is at least one branch of the Chutes which went full circle - from Scandinavia to (possibly) Flanders to Normandy to Great Britain to North America and ... back to Scandinavia again. That would be the Louis Ray Chute branch, which emigrated back to Scandinavia and is now on its second generation of Chutes. Thanks to Jan Eric Chute, who provided the information on his family, the Scandinavian Index has also been updated to include:
Louis Ray Chute and Unni Sjolie Chute
Andre Donald Chute and Trude Hammer Chute
Are Sætre and Marianne Chute Sætre.

Arthur Harris Chute, Mabel Augusta Lawrence Chute Harris, and Mabel Edith Babbitt Maynard Chute. The research on this family group was done by Chuck Munn of Peoria, Arizona. (Thanks again Chuck!)
Barbara Ione Stead Clark, William Jeremiah Teed and Owen Joseph Clark, Sr. Information was provided by Jen Dominick, great-granddaughter of Glenna Opal Chute and Rowland Wilson Stead.
Charlton Foster Chute Jessie Pearl Hill Chute. Their grandson, Stephen Chute McGeorge, wrote a wonderful summary of his grandfather's life and confirmed that "Charlton Chute" of the juggling world was indeed Charlton Foster Chute. The biography can be found in Charlton's Notes section.
William Jeremiah Bunfill, and Helen Olivia ("Nellie") Chute Bunfill.
James Gilbert Kennedy, and Margaret Susan Bunfill Kennedy.
Thomas Bunfill and Margaret E. Bridgewater Bunfill Chute.

George Lisenbee and Laura Naomi ("Rosie") Bunfill Lisenbee.
Jacob Colclasure and Harriet Alfretta ("Hattie") Bunfill Colclasure.
Thomas Raymond Bunfill and Ethyl Mae Herren Bunfill.
Daniel Chute, the date range of the record 1612-1614, described in the Calendar to the Sessions Records as a "Gentleman", living in St James, Clerkenwell, London. As he doesn't quite fit any of the Daniel Chutes of that same time period, I'm not quite sure who this Daniel is.
Daniel John Chute, and Paula I. Irwin Chute.
Daniel William Chute, son of Chute and Bore, Liverpool, Great Britain.
Earle F. Montgomery and Barbara Rosamond Chute Montgomery
Eral Campbell Chute and Dorothy Bertha Jones Chute.
A brief Chute/Clute notation for researchers looking for Chutes in Upstate New York. Chute records, especially from the 17th and 18th centuries sometimes turn out to be CLUTE records which have been transcribed or copied incorrectly. If you're looking for further information on the Clutes, the Schenectady Public Library has a section devoted to them.
Arthur N. Chartier and Ada B. Chute Chartier.
Joseph Raymond Chartier and Beva Helen Bayes Chartier.
Reverend Richard Arthur Chartier, Jennie (surname unknown) Chartier and Grace Robertson (Williams) Chartier.

Frank Edward Andrews and Evelyn Cecilia Chute Andrews.
Peter Chute and Alice (surname unknown) Chute.
Cornelius Chute and Ann (surname unknown) Chute.
Cornelius Chute and Eliza (surname unknown) Chute.
Trevor Gerard Chute and Mary Frances or Francis Fitzsimons/Fitzsimmons Chute. Here's the first of two photos I hope an Irish Chute will recognize. Trevor Gerard also had a daughter, Mary Catherine - and it may be that he returned to Ireland from Boston so that his parents might help him raise his two children. Here's hoping one or both of them look familiar to somebody!
Elmer Irenius Chute and Wilma Elene Maples Chute.
John Ignatius Chute.
Richard Chute and Mary (surname unknown) Chute. The family includes yet another Pierce Chute, who disappeared from the family censuses after becoming an adult, whether due to death or emigrating elsewhere is unknown. This is one of the rare Chute families who spent at least two generations on Staten Island; another interesting sidenote is that daughter Catherine ("Kate") Chute married and had a son, Richard Earnest Dupuy, born 1887, who lived with the Chute family for many years. It is not known if this is the same Richard Earnest Dupuy born 1887 in New York who became well-known as an author, primarily on military subjects, and who had a son and co-author with the name of Trevor. If so, the descendants of that particular Dupuy branch encountered a recent tragedy when one of them became tangled up in a religious cult and later committed a rather dramatic suicide as a result; his niece is comedienne Tina Dupuy who has her own blog and - not at all surprisingly - some rather strong opinions about religious cults. But again, I'm not sure if these are the same Richard Earnest Dupuy's.
Lieutenant Dan Chute
Chute, Daniel ("Dan"), Lieutenant , a member of the Irish Bandera (lower photo, right), has been updated in the History section as the unknown Chute killed in the Spanish Civil War. Unfortunately, we haven't been able to place him within a specific Chute family family group; perhaps a relative or an Irish Veteran will recognize him or know which Chute family branch mourned his loss.

Chute, Lloyd and Alice Louise (surname unknown) Chute. Lloyd's service in World War II has also been added to the History section.

Terence Michael Chute of Surrey.
Challoner St. Clair Richard Chute and Jeanne ("Jan") Negar Bolles Chute.
Oscar Moody Chute and Margaret MacRae Chute.
Challoner Duke Chute.
Stanley Earl Chute and Ruth Moe Chute.
Charles Chute, Sr. and Elizabeth Sundown Chute. This family has also been added to the Tribal Interaction section of the History section, as well as the Select Locational Index for Upstate New York.
William Chute and Mary (surname unknown) Chute, also from the same area, captured in the 1870 U.S. Census, claim to be from Holland. Both this family and the preceeding Chute-Sundown family have a daughter with the given name of "Mina", which is unusual, and have two other children, Cornelia and Cornelius, which does make one wonder if the descendants of the elder Cornelius "Chewt" of the Netherlands passed on the name through the subsequent generations.

George Macready Chute and Adelaide Chippendale Chute.
William Francis Chute, Sr. and Margarett Smith Chute. Researcher and descendant Edward Joseph ("Eddie") Chute, Jr. learned from a handwritten and previously undeciphered notation on his great-grandfather's death certificate ("with Nancy's help, she's a retired RN & can read anything") that his great-GREAT grandparents' names were "Thomas Chute and Mary", who presumeably remained behind in Ireland, on the Dingle Peninsula somewhere. If this rings a bell with any of our Irish Chute researchers out there ... let us know!

Here are two extremely popular Chutes (if you're a United States Superbowl fan) that I haven't been able to identify yet. A Robert Chute of Charlotte, 40, and an Eric Chute are two of the four men responsible for starting up a grassroots petition to recognize a "Superbowl Monday" holiday ... or as it is more popularly known: "National Hangover Day". If anyone would like to sign their petition, their website can be found at http://www.foulballs.net/2007/01/national-hangover-day.html. Maybe while you're signing their petition, you can ask them where they fit into the Chute Family.

Scott Chute and Elizabeth ("Libby") Summers Chute
Denis Scanlan and Josephine Chute Scanlan.
Charles Chute and Bridget Horgan Chute. Note that we originally had Charles' wife as Mary Frances Fitzsimmons or Fitzsimons; that has been corrected to Bridget Horgan; Mary Frances has been tentatively identified as the wife of Trevor Chute, Charles' brother. Thanks to Eileen Scanlan of Chicago who added many more details of this branch, we've now been able to connect Janet Chute (the author of Chute's Western Herald on the title page) to the Main Line of Chute Hall Chutes ... until Eileen identified Charles' son Roland as "Roland Patrick", all we knew was that Janet and her mother Margaret had been connected to one of the sons of Roland and Margaret Enright. Now we know it was Charles. Now ... if we could only find Janet and give her the good news. The Irish Index has been updated as well.
Henry Ladue and Clara Belle ("Cassie") Ladue Chute; sons Edward, Robert Judson and Henry Ladue.
