Christopher Whitmore Family Tree and Genealogy
Robert Whitmore 1870 - ?
Born in Cleator, about 1870, son of a miner, Robert Whitmore. He married Eleanor McFarlane in 1891 and by 1901 they had produced 4 children. He was a miner, the same as his father, living in Arlecdon and Frizington, close to the local mines.
The 1871 census shows a 2 year old Robert and Eliza Whitmore who lived with their father Robert aged 38 at 167 Parkside Cottage in Frizington. Also mentioned were stepfamily...Charles(17), Thomas(14), Martha(12) and Mary(7) Mooney. This would suggest that his father Robert married into the Mooney family and 'took on' the upbringing of his deceased wife's earlier children.

The 1881 Census shows that Robert Whitmore (aged 11) was born in Cleator and lived at Winder Gill, Lamplugh, with his father Robert aged 47, a widower and iron miner, together with daughter Eliza Ann, also aged 11. I wonder at this stage if they were twins and that their mother died in their chidbirth (unsupported). By this time the Mooney children have married and moved on.

It appears that there was some attempt by the mining companies to work the mine between 1880 - 1910. |

Capture a Moment in Time
A miner coming home from work would normally have washed in a bowl in the kitchen. If they were lucky enough they would have a tin bath tub, normally hung on the kitchen door. To provide a decent bath required several pots of hot water. In a two up, two down house with little privacy. There is was no doubt that amongst the children the event would have provided a great source of amusement, certainly not a weekly event. However, in these times, fathers word was law, at which I am sure the children would have been chased off with profanities, into the streets, where the children enjoyed their laughter whilst awaiting their turn.
