Shropshire - Extract from National Gazetteer, 1868
[Description(s) from The National Gazetteer (1868)]
a parish in the Wellington division of South Bradford
hundred, county Salop, 3 miles E. of Wellington, 13
N.W. of Shrewsbury, and half a mile from Oakengates
railway station. The parish is intersected by several
canals and railways, and abounds in ironstone and
coal, which have been worked from an early period.
The inhabitants are chiefly employed in the collieries
and ironworks at Ketley, the latter turning out vast
quantities of merchant bars, guide-iron, and wire-rods.
This census is useful in that it shows Ann Vaughan's parents to be Noah and Mary, and that Noah's parents were Jeremiah and Ann.
*Jeramiah b,1847 had a son Isaiah. Grace Vaughan was the daughter of Isaiah and married into the Berrisford family. This line of the family moved to Yorkshire, all were miners finally settling in Barnsley.

Bottling Wood showing the chimney of Alexandra Pit in the background where most of the miners living in the 67 houses would have worked. Photo by Arthur Culshaw. This photo of bottling Wood shows it is on the East side of the Douglas (Whelley) opposite to Coppull Lane.
The name is derived from a past family who used to own the wood. The Butlers.
