James Hodcroft 1801 - 1890
James Hodcroft, born in 1801, married Ellen Rogerson in 1827. As was common at this time, his name was spelled in different ways. James Hodcroft was a Market Gardener, and as the demand for food produce increased in Manchester, he moved to Ashton upon Mersey where he had a farm of 40 acres. He died in 1890.

James Hodcroft in the 1841 census, is shown as an Agricultural Labourer (farmworker) married to Ellen and with chlidren Joseph 14, Esther 11, Alice 8, John 6 and James 1. He was living at Wellington place , Stretford.
|
Wellington Place was
named after the first Duke of Wellington, Arthur Wellesley,
who defeated Napoleon at the battle of Waterloo in
1815 |
The
1841 census shows also that there were 4 other Hodcroft
families living and working in Stretford. It is most
likely that at least one or more of these was a brother
of James Hodcroft, or at least a relative. However
there were many Aldcroft families in the area from
which it seems the name Hodcroft is a derivative. |

The 1841 and 1851 census also show that nearly all Hodcrofts are from Stretford.
| Stretford in 1848 was a small village with the greater part of the population engaged in agriculture. | ![]() |
John
Fallows was the Urmston schoolmaster from 1839. As
Bosdin Leech recalls, ‘Here most of the Stretford
youths were at that time educated. He was a stern
man, given to using the cane freely, and as an extreme
punishment he had a contrivance by which he could
suspend a lad in a painful position’. (Leech,
Old Stretford, p. 7). (‘Fallows John, schoolmaster,
Stretford’ listed under ‘Stretford with
Chorlton, Crofts Bank, Davyhulme, Flixton, Urmston
& Neighbourhoods’ in Slater’s Directory
… 1843, p. 189). (Diary of Thomas Leech 1839-1840) |
In the 1851 census James Hodcroft was living at Edge Lane, Stretford and was a Market Gardener. The census suggests that his wife Ellen was born about 1805.

| As
Manchester continued to grow, it offered a good and
easily accessible market for Stretford's agricultural
products, in particular rhubarb, once known locally
as Stretford beef. By 1836, market gardening had become
so extensive around Stretford that one writer described
it as the "garden of Lancashire".In 1845,
over 500 long tons (508 t) of vegetables were being
produced each week for the Manchester market. Stretford
also became well-known for its pig market and the
production of black puddings, leading to the village
being given the nickname Porkhampton. A local dish,
known as Stretford goose, was made from pork stuffed
with sage and onions. During the 1830s, between 800
and 1,000 pigs a week were being slaughtered for the
Manchester market. (Wikipedia) |
By 1861 James Hodcroft had moved to Ashton upon Mersey, the next village and was a farmer with 30 Acres employing his own family. His wife Ellen died in 1869 aged 62.
