In the Name of God, Amen. I Edward Christie of the City of Charleston in the
State of South Carolina, Merchant being Sick and weak in Body, but of sound
Mind, Memory and Understanding, Praised be God for it, and considering the
certainty of Death and the uncertainty of the Time thereof, and to the end
that I may be the better prepared to leave this World, whenever it shall
please God to call me hence, do therefore make and declare this my last
Will and Testament in manner following that is to say, First and Principally
I commend my Soul into the hands of Almighty God my Creator hoping for free
pardon and remifsion of all my Sins and to enjoy everlasting Happinefs in
his Heavenly Kingdom through the Sole Merits of Jesus Christ my Saviour; my
Body I commit to the Earth at the discretion of my Executors herein after
named and as to such Wordly Estate wherewith it hath pleased God to intrust
me, I dispose of the same as followeth - First I order and direct that all
my just Debts and funeral Expences be first paid out of my Estate. Item I do
hereby order and direct that the Sum of Two thousand Pounds Sterling Money be
by my Executors herein after named placed out at Interest in the most secure
manner Pofsible, the Interest of One thousand Pounds of which I do hereby
Order and direct shall be paid by my said Executors to and for the use,
maintainance, Support and Education of my Nephew Alexander Christie Son of
my Brother Alexander Christie of Charleston aforesaid Baker, until he is of
the Age of Twenty one Years, and as soon as he shall arrive at the said Age of
Twenty one Years, then I do hereby direct my said Executors to pay to and I do
hereby give and bequeath the said one thousand Pounds unto my said Nephew and
to his Heirs and Afsigns forever. The Interest of the other One thousand Pounds
I do hereby Order and direct to be paid to my Niece Margaret Christie the
daughter of my said Brother for the same use and purpose as the Interest on
the other One thousand Pounds is directed to be paid to my said Nephew, until
she shall arrive at the Age of Twenty one Years or day of Marriage, which ever
shall first happen, then and immediately on her arriving at the Age of Twenty
one Years or day of Marriage I do hereby Order and direct my said Executors to
pay to and I do hereby give and bequeath the said One thousand Pounds unto my
said Niece Margaret and to her Heirs and Afsigns for ever. Item I do hereby
also order and direct my said Executors to place a further Sum of Eight hundred
Pounds Sterling Money aforesaid out at Interest in the most secure manner Pofsible,
the Interest of which I do hereby order and direct shall be paid to my Father in
four equal Quarterly Payments for and during the Term of his Natural Life, and
from and immediately after his decease, then it is my Will and dsire that the
said Interest of the said Eight hundred Pounds shall be paid in manner
aforesaid unto my Mother in Law and such Child or Children as shall or may be
living at the time of the death of my father, share and Share alike. Item I
do hereby give and bequeath unto my Sister Margaret Read the Wife of John Read
of Sterling in Scotland the Sum of Two Hundred Pounds Sterling and to her Heirs
and Afsigns for ever. Item I do herby give and bequeath unto my Sister in Law
the Wife of my said Brother Alexander the sum of Five hundred Pounds Sterling
Money to be to and for her own sole, seperate use and behoof and at her own
free Will and disposal for ever. Item all the rest, residue and remainder of
my Estate both real and Personal of every Nature and kind whatsoever and
wheresoever the same may be situate. I do hereby give, devise and bequeath the
same and every part and parcel thereof unto my said Brother Alexander, and to
his Heirs and Afsigns for ever. And Lastly I do hereby Nominate, & Constitute
my Brother Alexander, Robert Henry and Joseph Heargreaves Executors of this my
last Will and Testament herby revoking, annulling and making void all former
and other Wills, by me at any time heretofore made, declaring this only to be
and contain my last Will and Testament. In Witnefs whereof I have hereunto set
my Hand and Seal this Sixth day of September in the Year of our Lord One
thousand Seven hundred and Ninety Seven.
