David JONES and family

David JONES (1858-1902)

David Jones was born in Cardiff, Wales in 1858, the son of David Jones and Elizabeth Davies. According to his Marriage and Death Registrations, David's father was a farmer. David emigrated to New Zealand when he was about 13 years of age, but details have not been discovered yet.

In 1886 David married Emily Mist at Waipawa. He was labouring and Emily was a domestic servant. The marriage took place at the residence of Thomas Wooster, a Waipawa cattle dealer. Emily and David had seven children. David worked on farms in Hawkes Bay until the family settled in Woodville about 1891 where David farmed.

David died in 1902 in Woodville, aged 44, and was buried in Woodville. He died after two weeks illness with quinsy & pneumonia. Seven months after David's death his last son David was born.

Emily Mist

Emily MIST (1868-1954)

Emily Mist was born in 1868 at Woodgreen in Hampshire, England, the eldest daughter of Vincent Mist and Mary Anna Baillie. Emily's father was an agricultural labourer. In 1877 Emily migrated to Hawkes Bay in New Zealand on the ship Renfrewshire with her parents and sister.

As mentioned above, Emily married David Jones in 1886 and the couple had seven children, the last child after David had died. Emily remarried in 1908, a Woodville farmer John Harris. When John retired the couple moved to Havelock North where John died in 1927. John is burried in Havelock North. After John's death Emily lived in Hastings until she died in 1954. Emily was buried in Woodville with David Jones.

Eva Jones

Eva JONES (1888-1954)

Eva Jones, the eldest child of David Jones and Emily Mist was born in 1888. In 1908 she married Charles Avis Lynch. Charles, the son of William and Eliza Lynch, was a stockman at Porongahau in 1906. Eva and Charles had a son and daughter.

Charles and Eva initially lived at Woodville where Charles continued to work as a stockman. After the First World War Charles and Eva moved to the Waikato where Charles farmed. Charles died in 1954 and Eva died in 1979. Charles and Eva were buried in Glen Eden, Auckland.

In 2012 Michelle Wratten provided the photo of Eva and information on descendants. This can be seen on Rootsweb.

Emily JONES (1890-1972)

Emily Jones, the second daughter of David Jones and Emily Mist was born in 1890 at Patoka, Hawkes Bay. Emily attended Woodville School in 1897. She married Frederick William Ebbett in 1911. Frederick was the oldest son of William Ebbett and Mary Curry.

Emily and Frederick had four children. Frederick was a grocer in Woodville and the couple retired to Palmerston North about 1949. Frederick died in 1963 and Emily in 1972. Both died and were cremated in Palmerston North.

Charles JONES (1892-1982)

Charles Jones was born at Woodville in 1892, the eldest son and third child of David Jones and Emily Mist. In 1912 he married Margaret Mary Hanrahan (Peggy) and the couple had six children. Charles and Peddy lived in Woodville until about 1930, with Charles working as a grocers assistant, presumably for his brother-in-law Frederick Ebbett, and later farming at Woodville. The family moved to Palmerston North in the 1930s where Charles worked as a labourer. Peggy died in 1972 and Charles in 1982, both in Palmerston North. They were buried in Palmerston North.

Percy JONES (1893-1984)

Percy Jones was born at Woodville in 1893, the second son and fourth child of David Jones and Emily Mist. Percy attended Woodville School from 1899. In 1926 he married Elizabeth Cameron McBain. Percy and Elizabeth farmed at Twyford near Hastings in Hawkes Bay until they retired to Hastings about 1955. Percy and Elizabeth both died in Havelock North, Hawkes Bay and were buried in Hastings.

Alice JONES (1894-1981)

Alice Jones was born at Woodville in 1894, the fifth child of David Jones and Emily Mist. Alice attended Woodville School from 1901. Alice never married. Based on Electoral Rolls, Alice lived in Waipukura (1919), Waipawa (1928-1938), Havelock North (1946-1957) and in Palmerston North when she retired (1969-1981). She operated a rest home in Havelock North and died in Palmerston North in 1981.

Walter JONES (1896-1980)

Walter Jones was born in Woodville in 1896, the sixth child of David Jones and Emily Mist. Walter attended Woodville School from 1902. Walter married Lillian Trixie Morgan in 1922. Walter and Lillian lived in Woodville, farming on the Masterton Road until they retired to Woodville about 1960. Lillian died in 1975 and Walter in 1980, and both were buried in Woodville.

Annie JONES (1901-1992)

Annie Jones was born in Woodville in 1901, the seventh child of David Jones and Emily Mist. Annie married Joseph Andrew Hunt in 1920. Joseph was the son of John Haines and Elizabeth Hunt, a Banks Peninsula couple who had settled at Ruawhata to farm.

Annie and Joseph had four children. They lived and farmed in the Pahiatua district, at Ruawhata and later in Pahiatua. Joseph died in 1962 in Masterton and Annie in 1992 in Palmerston North.

David JONES (1903-1991)

David Jones was born in Woodville in 1903, the youngest child of David Jones and Emily Mist. He was born after his father had died. David grew up in Woodville, attended school in Woodville, and left school in 1917 during the First World War to work as a telegram delivery boy at the Woodville Post Office. He played rugby for Woodville, being in the Woodville Seniors in 1922. David worked at the Woodville Dairy Factory, learning the trade and obtaining responsibility.

In 1925 David married Irene Berkahn at Makotuku near Norsewood. Irene was the daughter of Christian Berkahn and Matilda Beck, both children of Danish settlers who came to New Zealand to clear the 90 Mile Bush. Irene's older brother Francis had played rugby with David Jones. David and Irene lived in Woodville where their four children were born. David was a butter maker in the Woodville Dairy Factory. In 1931 the family moved to Rangiwahia, where David managed the dairy factory until 1954.

Irene and David moved to Palmerston North in 1954 where David established a knitwear business. The business produced woolen garments for the New Zealand market. Irene died in 1968 and David in 1991. Both are buried in Palmerston North.
