Pre-Utah Period (1820-1852):

1820 Besides the information given in his patriarchal blessing (see 1844, Photocopy of the Patriarchal Blessing Certificate ..., below) this is the first affirmation of Joseph's birth date and birthplace, 16 January 1820, born in Oen [Owen] County, Indianna [Indiana], and is found in the Springville Ward [Utah] Historical Record, 1851-1875. Following their arrival in Utah, the Joseph Bartholomew family lived in Springville during the decade 1852 to 1861. They then departed to help settle Warm Creek, later Fayette, Utah. FHL film # 26458.

1820 Continuation of the first Springville Ward affirmation of Joseph's birth date and birthplace. It also shows that he was re-baptized and re-confirmed a member of the Church (as was customary at the time) on 16 February 1853. FHL film # 26458.

1820 A second Springville Ward affirmation of Joseph's birth date and birthplace (found at the bottom of the page): 16 January 1820, born in Oen [Owen] County, Indianna [Indiana], appearing in the Springville Ward [Utah] Historical Record, 1851-1875. This entry documents re-baptism and re-confirmation ordinances performed the second time for Joseph, on 3 May 1855, along with his daughter Mary Keziah, who, at age eight, was baptized and confirmed for the first time. Again, other than the patriarchal blessing and his 1857 sealing record (an extraction appears below under 1857), these Springville Ward Historical Record entries stand as the earliest known records which have been identified to date documenting his birth date and birthplace. Presumedly, they were created at or before the time of these baptisms, and certainly before their departure from Springville in 1861. FHL film # 26458.

1820 Another affirmation of Joseph's birth date and birthplace: 16 January 1820, Spencer, Oen [Owen] Indiana, found in the Fayette [Utah] Ward Record of Members, 1871-1950, Part 1. (This entry would not have been entered before 1871.) Interesting, too, on the record is the exact date of Joseph's first baptism, 10 August 1841. FHL film # 0025955.

1841 Affirmation of Joseph's initial baptism date and place, found in his wife, Polly's Bible. (See images of the actual Bible as well as her first page entry, which follow.) The baptism is listed as having taken place [10] August 1841, in Macclain [McLean] County, Illinois. Unfortunately, the precise entry date of the recorded information in the Bible is not known. It may have been as late as 21st November 1878, the date written on the book's initial entry page (see below).

1852 Deseret News [Weekly], dated 18 September, 1852, p. 2, announcing the arrival of the Joseph Outhouse Wagon Train Company into the Salt Lake Valley. It shows Joseph Bartholomew among the arriving pioneers, along with six other persons in his family. (Thus, there were a total of seven persons numbered in Joseph's family, which when compared with the listing of only six in the immediately preceding record, must have included the "missing" Electa Benson, as well.) http://digitalnewspapers.org.
