Hollows in Uniform

The list contains a minimum of information. Where a person is in the Hollow database parents' names are given which will help track them down in the database. Remember though, living people are not included on the Hollow database.

If you are tracking down a particular person the alphabetical list of the Hollow family members we have identified may be the best starting point.

Where a person has featured in the Hollow Log a link to the particular issue is provided.

There are many missing Hollows in uniform, particularly from th U.K. and America where there are no nominal rolls available to the public. So much of the information comes from Hollow family sources. If you can help with information, or corrections about people on the list or additions to the list please make contact. Photographs will be most welcome too.

If you would like more details of an individual's service please contact me. In most cases I can provide a little more information. Most entries now have the source of the information of their enlistment listed.

The Earliest?

The earliest possibles were mentioned in the Cornwall Muster Roll of 1569. Muster rolls were lists of able-bodied men who were called (or liable to be called) to arms. A man's income determined what arms or armour he had to provide, and some rolls may indicate either his income or the arms.

Maddren Parrishe (Madron & Penzance)
John HOLLA, bow sh. arr. (bow + sheaf of arrows)
John HOLLA, bill (Bill hook)

Powle parryshe (Paul)
Willm HOLLA, bill
John HOLLA, bill

These men may not have served at all and if they did probably did not have a uniform.

The next early record is a sailor, Thomas Hollow of His Majesty's Ship Montague in 1740. There is a will that Thomas made when he was joining the crew of the Montague. Thomas was the son of John and Jane Hollow (Holla) of Madron. See page 8 and 9 of Hollow Log 18.

More Hollows are mentioned in records of the Revolutionary War in the U.S. from 1775- 1778.
