Most of the Hollows in Redruth around 1840 were descended from Matthew Hollow and Christian Terrill. My family, and in fact all of the Redruth Hollows that I have found to have migrated to Australia, descended from Matthew and Christian's third son, also Matthew and his wife Mary Cocking. The story of these Hollows has been featured in The Hollow Log, Issues 16 & 17.

Stephen Hollow was the third son of Matthew Hollow and Mary Cocking. Four of Stephen's children, John, Mary, Joseph and Elizabeth, came to Rutherglen, a gold mining town in the North East of Victoria.

John H Hollow
John H Hollow was the fifth son of Matthew Hollow and Mary Cocking. He came to Australia in 1877. Two of his children however, Thomasine and James, had come to Australia in the 1850s.
Henry Hollow was the sixth son of Matthew Hollow and Mary Cocking. Four of his children, Henry, Arthur, Samuel and George came to Australia. They were to become - miners, builders and clergymen.
Henry Hollow's Children
Joseph Hollow was the seventh and youngest son of Matthew Hollow and Mary Cocking. This is my line of Hollows, Joseph Hollow came to Australia in 1853 and his son Joseph came in 1857. Joseph senior's wife and the rest of his children did not migrate until 1864. Joseph came originally to Beechworth in 1853 only thirty kilometres from Rutherglen. By 1855 he had settled at El Dorado another mining town some fifteen kilometres from Beechworth. The Joseph from Rutherglen and the Josephs from El Dorado are sometimes confused in local histories of the area.
